But I think you are asking about the height of the deck at the beakhead level which in McKay's plans is at the same height as the upper deck as is shown in first picture. From the pictures I took several years ago, when I visited Victory in Portsmouth (pictures 2, 3 and 4 below), one can clearly see there is a difference in level between the upper deck under the fore castle and the outside deck. Same difference can be seen in A. R. Bugler book plans - pictures 5 and 6 below. Based on that I would say there is an error in McKay's plans concerning this particular part of the ship. I am not yet there in my build but I will have that difference in height between the upper deck and beakhead deck. Hope this helps you. guraus Posted March 1, 2013 Author #45 Posted March 1, 2013 Konstantin, The upper deck probably does go, as Mc Kay shows it in the first picture above, all the way forward but what is probably missing is the small beakhead deck 2 or so feet above it as it is shown in Buglers plans (last two pictures). This will make it consistent with what the ship looks today. Was it always like that? I don't know. Was that common practice to have a deck 2 feet above the upper deck which made for a lost space between them? I am not so sure, as wasting space was not common practice on these ships. They always found something to store even in the smallest place. Maybe somebody else on this forum has some additional information about that. I will check to see in other books/plans I have at home of English built ships of that time to see if this arrangement does exists in other ships. Fortres Posted March 2, 2013 #48 Posted March 2, 2013 AlexandruNasal part of deck was heaved up later, than ship is built.The underbody of beakhead bulkhead testifies to it, on that until now there are decorative pilaster and partial continuation of roundhous below than level of deck on a side in the district of head reils of latrine.Probably, a deck it was heaved up because from an error in constructing before beakhead bulkhead a bowl turned out in 2 feet in depth, that was filled by water at skipper's daughter...I have interest too, what you looked books through this question.Especially I am interested by "HMS Victory - Building, Restoration & Repairs" Arthur R. Konstantin, I've looked in Rees'e Naval Architecture where he shows several plans of ships at around 1800 (one is a 74 guns) and none has that small rise platform at the beakhead. Couldn't find anything on Longridge's "The Anatomy of Nelson's Ship", nor in Goodwin's "English Man of War". It looks like is not all that common practice to have that but for some reason it was done on some ships. Probably none is wrong. If you want to post pictures you have to press the button "More Reply Options" in the lower right part and then another button labelled "Choose Files..." will show letting you to browse and atach pictures.
