Omega / Piet / Joe / Remco & Popeye.... Always good hearing from each of you.

Those little gratings are trying to kick my arsss right now. The smaller grid strips are much tougher to make .... Scrap rate about 80%! Thinkiing I should have just placed an order, but not giving up yet :)

Coffee set for 6:00 am....Lights out for tonight.

Ataboy Dave, stick with it and you'll lick this one too.  It's a challenge!   You could also do a show and tell in how to make small gratings  ;)

Cheers,

When the mind is tired, it's time to put it down and turn out the lights Augie. Seems like we should learn that after all these years. I tend to fight it a little too long sometimes.

Thanks for dropping in.

I always seem to hit the point of "time to sleep" and then convince my self to do "just a little more".

Sometimes it works out well for me, others well - :(

Took a couple of days away from the shop to take the Admiral on a little road trip with some friends to the coast....great time had by all.

So we came back all fresh and anxious to re-tackle those pesky beakhead grids....

Made pretty good progress the last couple of days.....photo below

Now ready to attach the upper panel (seen in the background) on the port side and create the stanchions for that side.

As nice as it was to take time away, it feels pretty good to be back in the shop.  I guess I have become re-addicted to this crazy hobby.  I'm sure none of you have a similar issue.... huh?

Thanks Piet.  Passion is true in most cases, but I don't recall any of my passions causing "withdrawal" symptems?  Admit it my friend, this stuff can cause deep problems that only Docter Phil can understand.  My appointment is next week.  :)

Is something wrong in next picture: while cutting grass think about job issues, and doing your job think about how to resolve some position on your build. Or we are wrong. Or too much dedicated.

Very nice build we watch here.

Hey Dave, you may want to reconsider your appointment with Dr. Phil, in my session with him , the presciption he gave me was to join this ship modeling group

Thanks all....appreciate the encouraging comments.

Omega, I promise, if I decide to rip this section out and re-do it, I'll do the UTube thing.

Pretty sure I'm going to go with this as is.

Finished with the beakhead assembly for now.  I can finally enjoy seeing her complete profile.  Channels next, then on to masts and we all know where that is leading.......

Hi Dave

You know, for some reason, ever since I was a kid, I always had the impression that the Mayflower was a 'simple little ship'. The same goes for Columbus' Nina and Pinta. Why, I will never know!

However, having seen your Mayflower, I have a new found appreciation for the beauty and complexity of this ship. Just looking at her beakhead and the complexity of the design, gratings, stanchions, etc, coupled with the incredibly difficult to replicate geometric paintwork, means that, she is a real beauty and far from being 'simple'.

Well done and I, too, am looking forward to the rigging.

Thanks for sharing this build with us!

Omega - I would have said the same thing about MF before I got into the smaller scale build and discovered there was much more to her than first  meets the eye.  In fact, after taking a couple of years off from modeling, I was looking for a little "warm-up" project before diving back into something more serious.  Boy was I surprised.  She's a real "sleeper" for sure.

I should add, I think Chuck Passaro's MF kit is excellent, (using his plan sheets for this build) and highly recommend it for builders at any level.  Although, as a scratch builder, I tend to do some personal bashing, my MF is 90% strict adherence to his kit design.  I look forward to tackling his Winnie once I ever finish these MF projects.  It looks really special.....in the class of the Confederacy.

Hi Dave:

I agree on Chuck's Mayflower plans.  I'm also using them for a scratch build (my first) and they're excellent.  I'm also using his instructions as a guide.  I'm not painting my Mayflower, but instead am using various woods to get color variation.  There will be a lot of 'poetic license' in the build, since I'm using the Mayflower as a basis for an imaginary ship from a book series.  I haven't started a build log on it, but I'm considering doing so.

You're several steps ahead of me, and following your build has been very useful and instructive - thanks!

Frank

That's the way to go Frank. It's YOUR ship, and you can bash it up any way your heart desires. Please let me know when you launch your log.
