Just found this log of yours, never knew about it. Love your work. Do you have any more updates?

I might have just a few pictures I didn't posted yet as update for this build, but I will restart working on it soon and I will post as I go. I am planning to start by doing the three yards.

Dear Alexandru,

most wonderful work as usual, thank you for sharing!!!

Only the blocks underneath the tops surprise me, the look like the ones one can buy and do not have the typical more roundish appearance.

Hello all,

Here is another update on this project: build the main yard and installed the top and royal masts.

For some reason the pictures which I uploaded in the right order are showing all mixed up...

This small project is almost done. Here are some more progress pictures.

There are two things I don't really know how to solve so maybe someone can give me some ideas:

1. How to coil the rope from the gun tackles on the deck - those rope spirals?

2. How to make a flag and from what to hang at the top of the mast?

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Alexandru

Hi Alexandru,

I'll try to answer but others maybe have better ideas than I do.

1. How to coil the rope from the gun tackles on the deck - those rope spirals?

a)Take the fall from the gun tackle and spot glue the end to the deck where you want the coil.

b)Then take a piece of double sided tape and stick to your workspace (not the deck).

c) Carefully coil the rope on the tape.  The tape will hold it in place.

d) Brush the coil with a 50-50 mix of water and white glue.  Allow to dry.

e) Carefully remove the coil from the tape.  It takes some practice as the coils are fragile and come undone easily.

f) Glue the coil to the deck over the end of the tackle fall.

2. How to make a flag and from what to hang at the top of the mast?

What I've done is use a drawing program and make the flag on the computer.  Copy and flip it over.    Take a piece of silkspan (the paper the flying models airplane guys use) and tape it to piece of cardstock.  Mark the silkspan and the cardstock as you'll need to flip the silkspan over.   Print the first side of the flag.   Flip the silkspan and retape paying attention to the marks.  Print the other side using the flipped image you created earlier.  It will take some practice to get each side of the flag lined up.   Do not use a color laser printer but a color inkjet type printer.    When printed, spray the flag with some artist's fixative.  When dry, you can bend, twist, etc. to shape.

I hope this helps.  I'm also hoping someone has an easier way.

Mark

Thanks a lot Mark,

I will give a shot to the rope coiling method you describe for sure. For the flag I need to find a inkjet color printer - only have a laser one.

Hello,

The stairway was an afterthought. Initially I planned to just paint black the corresponding opening but then - quite late in the process of building the base - I changed my mind and added it as you can see in the below pictures.

To do it, I just dril a lot of holes with a 1/4in bit inside the rectangle delimited by the hatch coamings. Then with a big file and a lot of effort while trying not to damage what was already done I made the hole sides nice and smooth. The sides were painted black and the stair was added in.

If you want to know how I actually did the stair, let me know as I have pictures on that process also and I can post them.

Regards,

Alexandru

I do not have pictures for the exact stairs in this model but I am doing them all the same way. Here are the pictures for several stairs I build.

Thats so cool thanks! Wonder how tall it is at 1/48 scale.

It is 45in (115cm) tall. Taller and wider than I expected so now I am not really sure where to put it. And it will require quite a big case!
