JP, the garboard strakes look good. Some of those smaller mistakes (like you 'ouch') won't be as visible as you think once things are completed. The camera doesn't really add ten pounds as they say, but it does tend to point out even the smallest, most minute flaws that people would never notice otherwise. Your Rattlesnake up to this point has been incredibly clean and well thought out.

That is some incredible detail. I'm not that familiar with photo-etching sets for anything besides armor and aircraft models. Can you take a picture of your photo-etch set so we can see what all is included?

This is always the best part of your builds Popeye! The details you put into these boats and ships are very well thought out and add so much character. Those lobster traps look excellent. Keep it up!

Robert, that capstan looks pretty sweet! I'm sensing that your dabbling with the dark arts of scratch building may lead you to the 'other half' of this website. Just adding the star to the top would have been cool but you went made it impressive when you inlaid it there. It's a very cool addition and I am very much looking forward to more updates.

"Thanks for enduring the brain dump".... No no no, thank YOU for making some of these deductions. Many people are building the USS Constitution by going off of whatever the kits decides is pertinent but not necessarily historically accurate. Your log is pointing out quite a bit and it's very enjoyable to follow along. Please continue to brain dump . I know I will be stealing some of your posted thoughts when I start on my Connie.

I've been following along silently since I joined the old website. Now I have to speak up. Not only is there one incredible Victory being built, but now you are starting on a second one. Your work has never been short of inspiring. This is simply incredible.

Augie, your rigging looks great. That main mast looks good with the stays and ratlines and it all looks very clean. I use a very similar method for my hanging rope coils, so I guess that makes me a neophyte darksider as well. I feel honored.

Now we're all caught up. The furled sail looks very nice. Your rigging is excellent as well and the color really matches up well with the weathering. It looks like you'll be done in no time so have you given any thought to your next project?

That is looking good Sjors! Question though... with all the big talk about starting another war, hadn't you better arm your ship just in case?

You almost have this up to current now, don't you? I do remember some rigging being worked on before the upgrade though. Again, it's incredible about the weathering you do on your Supply.

Niagara by Gyber - Model Shipways
patrickmil replied to Gyber's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1801 - 1850
Robert, I'm glad you're online with your Niagara. Your build is looking very clean. I'd like to follow along to the finish line. -
Well... I'm off to a great start on my main mast. I have the course yard completely mounted and secured with rigging. The other yards are pretty simple and they will be very easy to secure because I have installed pins on them to locate precisely onto their respective spots on the main mast. This idea comes from Mark, so many thanks to him. I have my shrouds rigged and will be rigging the ratlines next. Cue the bourbon and The Doors...

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
