  1. LOL George, the eyes dilating are what I like to compare to the 'calm before the storm'. This planking and framing has been difficult because he looks at the long sticks like I purposely bought them as cat toys. I have to lock him up if I'm using a micro saw because he thinks he should reach in and 'help out'.
  2. Tim, Tom, and Augie, thanks for stopping by. Framing on the stern continues today. Sherman is pretty young still and it figures he'd be destructive since I named him after General Sherman.
  3. Great work Larry. The hull is outstanding. Your anchor and bowsprit are wonderful representations as well. For my dust issues, I've used a large makeup brush. I get some funny looks when checking out at the register with said items, but the soft bristles are great at removing dust while keeping my ship intact.
  4. Great detail on the cross section so far. I've been silently following along. I may be taking some of your ideas (if you don't mind, that is) when I start putting pieces into my gun deck. Very nice work with the pumps.
  5. Great work on that planking Sal! It looks as though you are almost to the finish line with it.
  6. It's looking good Bob! Your pictures are so good it's hard to appreciate the scale and the tiny size of some of these pieces.
  7. Thanks all for looking in. I hope everybody's Holiday season went well. I have several days off so I figured I'd take full advantage and get some ship building done. Not a huge update, but progress nonetheless. I've planked and rough sanded the two counters on the stern. I also included a picture of a force of nature for my hobby. I don't think Sherman intentionally tries to upset me by wanting to chew on my ship so I can't hate him, he's just following his nature which is destructive.
  8. That's incredible work Ben! Only seven frames left? I can't wait to see them all in place.
  9. The shrouds and ratlines look great Rich. Your stays loo good too. Nice work!
  10. The bowsprit is looking good Larry! Did you get the 1/64" wood for treads or go with styrene? I agree with Augie on felt pad correction.
  11. Nigel, that deck is breathtaking. I will have to give your LoS and copper method a try. The results you're achieving with it are incredible.
  12. Fletch, the stern framing looks good. Are you shaping your stern filler blocks next?
  13. I can't wait to see Fletch. The stern timber issue is quite the hurdle to jump when converting to another version from Model Shipway's excellent model.
  14. A plank on the counter and a filler block between the most outboard stern timber and bulkhead R. More will be coming when I'm not having champagne with the family for New Year's Eve. BTW, HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVERYBODY!!!!!!! Also, GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. Ouch, I hate that when that happens. I always hate drilling into model ship planking because of the tendency for splintering. Maybe it's just the basswood. I'm sure you'll get it turned around in no time though. Happy New Year to you as well!
  16. WOW! Those sails look amazing! Great realistic weathering. Details like that are lost or forgotten so often. Outstanding work.
  17. Thanks Ben. I will hopefully be following up with more pictures this evening. I have started putting counter planking in place to help me visualize where the hull planking end.
  18. Fletch, I too had thought about that stern timber being cut in two when drilling for the rudder. I made the decision to go ahead anyway as the counter planking and window framing should hold everything together nicely when I do it. The planking I've started putting on the counter has been cut to shape rather than bent so there won't be any spring back action when the center stern timber is cut through. Your R bulkhead looks great and the shape of your stern timber looks good too. Great work.
  19. The devil is in the details Popeye, and I'd have to sell my soul to get the results you have. Those rails are fantastic and very precise.
  20. Tim, and to any that follow, I will gladly post my stern plans. I just want to clean them up a bit. My chicken scratch might not be legible to anybody outside of the admiral and kids.
  21. Popeye, Just a little thickness to the sides of the last two bulkheads close to where the spar deck is ought to do the trick. The bulkheads are already wide enough and close to where I want at the gun deck level. For the upper counter (this is where the name is placed on the drawings for the original stern) I will be using planks that are more narrow. Thanks for dropping in and having a gander
  22. Guys, thanks for the generous comments. Reading these is making me want to be home (and not at work) working on Connie. Sjors, I'd imagine the dark side is in your near future. Sal, I wouldn't know my a$$ from a hole in the ground without marking things up quite a bit. CaptainSteve, I'd be happy to share the plans I made on the stern timbers. I want to get them into a finished drawing before releasing them. Tim, thanks for looking in. I was in danger of over-researching myself. For Connie's earliest configuration there is no concrete, air-tight evidence of what she actually looked like so I'm just going with what feels good and looks right to me.
