  1. Pretty cool work tables. It is nice to have everything easily reachable. I am always looking for the one little thing. Great build log as well. I love these fishing ships from Brittany.
  2. Spar Update. This is the resultof my beginner technique. It is not toobad. I am satisfied with my first take. 2 pics: one without stain one with.
  3. Thank you Frank for your kind words!. I have a long road ahead of me. This site is extremely helpful and inspiring. I will likely do my sails like yours. JP
  4. I like what you have done with the sails. Really enjoying watch this build.
  5. Pretty cool and ingenious. How long do they last with the sawdust?
  6. Working on making the spars. Not sure this is a textbook technique but it is working pretty well.
  7. Starting to attach blocks and working on the standing rigging. This is the part which makes me the more nervous. The plans are terrible so you spend more time trying to understand them than actually rigging. To attach the block, i was able to find some good videos on YouTube especially this one. Great technique from Bender!
  8. Done with the master!!! Final paper turned in, time for some wood time or like my wife calls it "wood porn". LOL
  9. Thank you for your reply Mark. I am looking to get a machine as versatile as possible. Maybe a lathe bigger like yours could be an option. is there a location on this site where I could find some documentation on 'some of the other ways to turn masts and yards' you mentioned? -JP
  10. Hi. I am in the market for a lathe. I have to admit that I am a little bit confused with information I am reading . ideally I would like to get one machine to do wood and metal. My understanding if it is correct, is that the lathe must turn faster for wood than metal.most of the micro lathe go up to 5000 rpm and I thought that the smaller the piece of wood (diameter) the faster the speed must be . Based of the calculation method I found , the speed should be much higher for items like a mast, pins,... What models are you actually using? I found these. Any recommendation? https://www.grizzly.com/products/4-x-6-Micro-Metal-Lathe/G0745 http://www.sherline.com/4000pg.htm http://www.taigtools.com/mlathe.html The first one is more in my price range. If you have any other suggestions, please do not hesitate to let me know. Jp
  11. Can you share the instructions? Do you need translation?
  12. Well, almost a year since I start this ship. So much have happened ! One more kid , a home purchase, a full garage remodel (insulation, drywall, paint and even cut out a window) and finally the near completion of my Master degree (one more class). I am dying to get back in the workshop. I will start posting some updates by the end of December from my new man cave!
  13. Thank you Mark ! I will take a look at their logs and see what I can decipher on the technique to follow.
  14. Hi fellow Shipwrights, I am looking for documentation on how to build a new Knee of the head, Stem and Gripe from scratch for a future project, the Fair American. In looking at a lot of different build logs it seem like the idea is to create some kind of "puzzle" - excuse my expression - to rebuild these 3 sections. Of course, I am sure there is a method or plans to do that. Are these plans standard per period? Ship type? Is there any reference book I should be looking into it? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. JP
  15. Nice start. Quick question, is the practicum really needed for this build? I have her on the shelf and she will be most likely my next built. When looking at the plans, it seems that the photocopy from kit are cut off on the bottom making it difficult to identify which sheet is which in some cases.
