Couple questions regarding Chainplates
russ replied to BareHook's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Ken: I agree with Rich. Strop the lower deadeyes, attach them to the chainplates, and then attach the chainplates to the hull. Reeve the lanyards as the shrouds are installed. Russ -
Michael: The bitts and the knees look great. I also like the elegant chamfered edges on the inboard portion of the bowsprit. I will doing the same thing on my schooner. That seems to have been a common detail. Russ

Next kit suggestion???? moved by moderator
russ replied to Rich_engr's topic in Wood ship model kits
My vote would be for Syren. I have seen Chuck's plans and instructions and I know that kit itself is first rate. Russ -

Martin: Your model is looking very good. On the rigging questions, I would place any of the sources above the Mamoli plans. Lees, Steel, Antscherl should serve you well. It might pay to get a copy of the Model Shipways plans also. They are dated, but I am sure well researched. Russ

US Brig Syren by Gahm - Model Shipways
russ replied to Gahm's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1801 - 1850
Beautiful work so far. Your hull is really nice. The planking and coppering look great. The guns look they are spot on from the photos. Russ -
You are doing good. so far. Fairing is a time consuming process, but it will yield great dividends when you plank. I think that it is possible to do a bit of prebeveling on the bulkheads prior to installation, but I agree that the bulk of the work needs to be done after the hull framing is glued up. You always want to take off less than you think you should. It is easier to take more off later than to try and add it back on afterwards. Russ

Augie: You have made a good start on your spars. I look forward to seeing some rigging. Russ

Cutting that rascally rabbet
russ replied to trippwj's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Yes, you have it correct. You are making an area into which the end of the planks sit. The rabbet, depending on the hull's shape in any given area, will change shape along its length. Russ

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
