  1. Bob: I see. In future, always measure for and set the wales first, and then plank below them. This will save you having to go through this again. Good luck. Russ
  2. Bob: As I understand it, one side has the wales sitting too low? Russ
  3. Ken: I agree with Rich. Strop the lower deadeyes, attach them to the chainplates, and then attach the chainplates to the hull. Reeve the lanyards as the shrouds are installed. Russ
  4. Michael: The bitts and the knees look great. I also like the elegant chamfered edges on the inboard portion of the bowsprit. I will doing the same thing on my schooner. That seems to have been a common detail. Russ
  5. Eric: Youi definitely want your gunports to follow the deck line. You need a fairly consistent height of the gunport above the deck to make the guns fit properly. Russ
  6. Frank: Thanks. I appreciate the compliment. My client is very pleased so far. Russ
  7. My vote would be for Syren. I have seen Chuck's plans and instructions and I know that kit itself is first rate. Russ
  8. Bob: Interesting that they would use a hook there. A shackle is more common on such things down here. Russ
  9. The gunports follow the sheer (longitudinal curve) of the deck, which is not the same as the sheer of the hull. Russ
  10. Bob: The frame looks pretty good to my eye. My one piece of advice at this point is to leave a bit of meat on the frame for fairing. Not much, but give yourself a bit of wiggle room. Russ
  11. The jig should make this process easier. I have seen that sort of jig used with success on many other builds. Russ
  12. Martin: Your model is looking very good. On the rigging questions, I would place any of the sources above the Mamoli plans. Lees, Steel, Antscherl should serve you well. It might pay to get a copy of the Model Shipways plans also. They are dated, but I am sure well researched. Russ
  13. Beautiful work so far. Your hull is really nice. The planking and coppering look great. The guns look they are spot on from the photos. Russ
  14. You are doing good. so far. Fairing is a time consuming process, but it will yield great dividends when you plank. I think that it is possible to do a bit of prebeveling on the bulkheads prior to installation, but I agree that the bulk of the work needs to be done after the hull framing is glued up. You always want to take off less than you think you should. It is easier to take more off later than to try and add it back on afterwards. Russ
  15. Augie: You have made a good start on your spars. I look forward to seeing some rigging. Russ
  16. That frame is looking good. You are correct to be thinking ahead on this build. That is a key to success in scratch building. Always try to think ahead to make sure you do not have any unpleasant surprises. Russ
  17. Forgive my promoting this in my own log, but I have recently added some history/backgound on this build in the opening post of this log should anyone wish to know a bit more about this vessel type. As always, questions and comments are wecolmed. Russ
  18. Yes, you have it correct. You are making an area into which the end of the planks sit. The rabbet, depending on the hull's shape in any given area, will change shape along its length. Russ
