HMS Druid by Krug - FINISHED - 1:48 - Hahn

You did a great job. When I had to make links I would use a drill bit the right diameter. That way my oversized fingers would not get pinched. David B -

Toni, I saw a photo of you and your model in the clubs newsletter. When I was talking with Kurt he gave me good description. I wish I could have been there to really get a close up view. Since I have been away your work is getting better and better. David B

Learn something new all the time. The few people I know have that set up use a riser unless I did not get a real close look. David B

That finshes really enhances the beauty of that model. Do you apply it straight or do you cut it down a bit. My experience with varnishes is that some of them are for furniture and a little too thick. David B

When using the rear mounted post you also need the riser for the head stock. The rules for using a cut off tool have not changed. The only difference is instead of cutting from the front you are doing the reverse . While replacing the slide is a start you could still use the milling slide to do the same thing. David B

Looking good. Your bowsprit is nice and the planking on the bow is great. David B

Nils I have complete sympathy. Years ago I spent a week working on a miniture pump. I was doing a final cleaning before blackening and it went ping into the sea of last parts. I found it a month later after I made a duplicate. David B

The museum at Manitowoc has been hosting a show and contest for over 35 years. It has grown from a local show to include models from the entire midwest. Over the years we have had models from Idaho to Arkansas. I have had the pleasure at being at and helping out for quite a few of them. This being the first year I could not attend. Hopefully next year. For many it is a focal point to get together and have a good time swap ideas and techniques and drool over well built models. The museum's mission is the craft and the history of the Great Lakes. It is the repository for all information relating to the Gato Class Submarine as well as Burger Boat. http://www.wisconsinmaritime.org/index.php David B

You are doing a fantastic job Alan. The making of frames properly is a time consuming task. a coupkle of years ago I saw a cross section of a Great Lakes Schooner at Manitowoc. Needless to say it did very well. I remember one of the modelers asking him about the framing he did. And he said it was an average of one frame per day to get it right. Just do the best that you can and and have fun and enjoyment in a job well done. David B

Great planking job. I have found that on boats of this type it is not easy to get a full run going clear across. Bravo. David B

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
