Harbor Freight Workbench
dgbot replied to Landlubber Mike's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
There is a Harbor Freight in the Chicago area. I have gone on many times. Their prices are indeed good. But to me they are the Walmart of hardware. Great deals on many items. But on their tools both hand and power do not buy sight unseen. I got a good look at one of the bench drill presses because it was cheap. The item was made on the cheap. For extra $40 I could get a good one at Menards. David B -

You have more patience than I amigo. I would have pulled what little hair I have left out. Now all you and the Admiral need is a nice bottle of wine and some soft music to ease your nerves. Hopefully he did okay. David B

Another thing you can do is make a base from a polished mirror. I have seen this done many times in the past. David B -

I then proceeded to finish the turret. I cut out the parts for the pilot house and assembled them first. Then I cut out the pieces fo the armor plate and after they were glued together shaped and put to the side.. The awning supports were a real pain to work with. If I had the right materials I would have remade them in brass. They were then glued to the armor after touching them up with a marker they will do. If I could have figured out how to make them without photo etch I would have. But my workshop is in Chitown and my sister would not be happy with me making a mess. The pilot house was glued on next then the periscope. David B

After putting on the turret I cut out and formed the funnel. One of the tnigs I did was to cut out a piece of scrap and glued it to the bottom of the funnel. This made for more gluing surface. David B

trunnels on margin planks?
dgbot replied to hamilton's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
To me adding trunnels is a personal choice. Ona real vessel they are easy to miss. On a model if not donw prooperly they detract fom the model. Many modlers put them in and they ad a maritime measels effect. They are either to big or n ot in contrast with the deck. David B

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
