One way to prevent wicking is to paint a coat of base color over the masking edge first before using the final color. Or even a coat of clear first. I'm surprised you got a good line with unsealed basswood. Good burnishing job.

One thing about cherry is that it usually doesn't take stains and finishes evenly and should be sealed before finishing.

Price or not that is a really beautiful model sleeping car. I was surprised at the modeling of the buffering system. Hadn't realized it was so complicated.

The Scharnhorst model is coming along nicely. You've piqued my interest in German ships now.. Its an interesting departure from the usual plastic sacle productions.. Good work.

Should be some of the best stuff you can get. You may have to cut through a lot of junk but the sound wood you find will be of the best. Watch out for foriegn metal in it as fokls over the years have driven nails and staples into them.

I think even better would be a hex ball drive,but they're not so easy to come by,unless of course one were to be supplied.

I wonder if the Vasa website may have some insight into the chemical makeup of historic paints. There certainly seems to be a variety of colors. Although its true she didn't have a sternwheel..

Hi Guys, I have carved yellow Cedar for many years and it is wonderful to work with. I haven't had good luck turning it but that's about it. I'm also a little allergic to sanding dust from it, it raises little blisters on the sides of my fingers. Also one should wear a mask when sanding as it may make your nose run,same as red cedar. The other thing I've found is that it is sensitive to light and darkens somewhat when exposed to say,window light. I know this because some of my carvings that had been displayed in store windows had price stickers on them and the area covered by the stickers was lighter than the surrounding wood.

    Other than that its great for machining etc. I haven't really tried to bend it. I have a pretty good stash of 4/4 x5" boards I need to use up and I think I'll use em for framing a 3/8 scale Nonsuch.    Bill

Looking at this made me wonder at first where North Africans got their wood? Then I remembered that one of the things they wanted for their  ransom payments was timber from North America. I suppose they traded with other European countries in the same way. Beautiful work Nils. Where do you get your motivation?

Too thick is good. You can always take em down till they look right. Too thin and then you need to start over.

For a good fit, I'm wondering why you didn't make your pattern from the model instead of the plans?

Had a case of modelers block. Plus a death in the family,103 yr old Mother in law passed away,and life in general  sorta got in the way.

Well I completed the coppering and went on to some other stuff like the gunport lids, stern decoration and then got a start on the figurehead and head rails. I'm having a lot of fun.

Have you tried using Kicker ? Its a product that comes in a little spray bottle and when applied to the joint causes CA to set promptly. I do not usually spray it but use the pickup tube as an applicator to avoid overspray and waste. CA sets in the absence of oxygen so that what the Kicker does then quickly evaporates.

The winch on those boats look a lot like the Alaska gill netter boats used on the Northern rivers for salmon.

If you carve your own parts and then cast them from your own originals the parts are still considered original work. Its not too difficult to cast resin parts and theres a ton of material on how to on the net. But I agree that a lot of the metal kit parts are a little crude. The General public will probably not notice the difference though.
