Trouble is a new motor powerful enough to run a planer can cost a couple hundred bucks.. I did see a nice little 4 in jointer mounted with a motor at an estate sale for $100 a couple months back. 

You could use a power hand planer if you're just doing those short lengths. Makita makes a very nice tool. Harbor Freight would be cheaper yet,and don't forget the garage/estate sales for a good deal.

I looked at Sauers catalog for veneers. You may have either Zebrawood,my first choice,or Macassar ebony. Pretty stuff.

Cut a little wide and use a disc sander to true up the angles.

That looks like it will work fine. I bought a pack of N-95s about 3 weeks ago. Good thing I did too as I've been power carving basswood which is really dusty. Also I gave two to some friends who have been cleaning out an old house and a shop that were mouse infested. You can geet the Hanta virus from mouse waste. Anyway good on your wife. I see mostly women doing this around the country where they can get the material.  Bill

Nice little Titanic build there. I built a 53 inch R/C Titanic back in the 90s. I sailed it one or two times then took the radio gear out as it was not a very stable ship,despite 8= pounds of ballast in her. As I built it for a friend I don't have it anymore. The plans were from France I believe.

I think an approximation is the best you can hope for. Too many factors involved with getting the right color. You can take a color sample in to the paint store and match it there with the color swatches. But when you take it outside it may look totally different in the sunlight. Best try to replicate the look under which the colors will be displayed.

I will say that the area that you need to bond toneeds to be roughed up. Perhaps one of those diamond rifflers that you can get from Micr-Mark will do the job. They can just do a narrow area if that's all you need. Might wanna mask off the area to be glued to. Just use titebond or similar PVA.

Good luck on that kit. I bought one about 50 yrs ago and promptly gave up on it as I was so inexperienced at the time. I still have the green cardboard thread holder in my collection. Will love to see one finished.

Not only the ship model kits. My cousin ordered shoes online from a Chinese company and they were BAD. Cheap materials and workmanship and not like the ads pictured. Sad.

Always put them back in the same place. No matter how unorganized and messy your shop looks always put them back in the same place. If you have a lot of small tools and parts then you may need aq tool box with a lot of drawers and a number of parts bins racks ,still always use the same drawers for the same parts and tools. If your getting on and living in the hereafter.Thats when you walk into a room and wonder,what am I hereafter. Then theres not much hope,but putting things aback in the same place always helps.  Bill

I wasn't thinking immediately ,but down the road. I can see that its an involved project. I once built a large model of Sitka Alaska as it looked in 1840. It was scratch built and based on a plan drawn by the Russians in 1840. Since Sitka is a coastal town I had to include a couple ships and Native canoes. Lots of fun.They even had a ship mockup on land to teach local boys seamanship. I think this will be a satisfying project for you and fun for us to watch.
