  1. Thanks Russ and all who hit the like button. Yea I will be adding the two cleats at the end as well as a couple of eye bolts, one at the end and two on the jaws. I think there are also 6-7 blocks to be tied on before I mount it. Didnt get much done last night. I was OBE - Overtaken By Events Sam
  2. Nice project J. That motor looks great; clean but not too clean. Like a working motor should. Sam
  3. It sure does seem like a lot of work Rich. If it turns out to be too much work and you go with Chucks line, he has a lot of satisfied customers. Sam
  4. Thanks all for the comments and those who hit the like button. Appreciated. I am definitely my worst critic. Gets me in trouble sometimes. Gaff is largely shaped, starting in on the Driver Boom tonight. First I eight squared the Gaff, you cant really see it in the picture: Then rounded everything over. Once I finish the Boom I'll give everything a final scrape and then a coat of blond shellac. then a good rubbing with linseed oil. then I can add in the blocks and figure out how to mount the parell beads: Sam
  5. Rich, i have been very pleased with chucks rigging material. I have been using the syren instructions for places where my enterprise instructions are lacking. They recommend wetting Your line for the foot ropes and putting a small amount of weight to it and letting it dry completely. It seemed to work well with chucks line for the foot ropes. Maybe it will work with what you have? sam
  6. "L" brackets or corner braces as I know them are great to to hold a keel while you do the bulkheads IMHO. A lot of builders like Legos to help hold the bulkheads square, wish I knew that when I did mine so long ago. Coffee qualifies as an adult beverage in my book. I wasn't allowed to drink it as a child. Hmmm Better Half calls me a big kid sometimes, I wonder how that works for beverages. Sam
  7. Jo, Thanks so much, you are way too kind. Build her for you??? Now what kind of friend would I be if I did that? Nah, I'll let you have all the fun and glory on your build. 🤪 I will however give you all the advise and encouragement I can. Although, when it comes to advice, there are far more experienced and skilled builders here than I . Sam
  8. Woo Hoo!!!! Standing Rigging IS DONE!!! Well unless I decide to redo my back stays. Knowing they arent right, I keep thinking there should be something I could do short of ordering more wood and pretty much starting the rigging over. Sorry, I am not that brave (masochistic?) Finishing off the horses was a bigger challenge than I anticipated; getting the stretcher bars to sit square was interesting. They still are not quite right. I can live with them. I have started shaping my Driver Boom and Gaff. Kind of refreshing to work with some wood again. I had to repair my 7-10-7 jig as I seem to have broke it at some point. I think next build I will make one from brass, this is the second or third time I have had to repair the one I have and its the second I have made. Next up 8 squaring the parts. Sam
  9. Vossie, Those are some small blocks and hooks indeed! Congrats on even seizing them. I have enough trouble with Chucks 3/32 blocks. Regarding your hooks, would it be possible to eliminate the ring and replace it with a straight end? You could epoxy them in like an eye bolt. A bit of judicious faux seizing and perhaps nobody will see the difference. Except you and those of us watching...... 😀 Just a thought. Sam
  10. Jo, What the others said. Read everything as many times as it takes to get a feel for the steps involved. Then treat each page as its own project. Ask as many question as you need and then ask more. In the forums list there is a section on framing and planking: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/14-building-framing-planking-and-plating-a-ships-hull-and-deck/ Take a stroll through there, there will be posts that will answer many of your questions as they come up. Just enjoy yourself and take your time, its not a race. If you get frustrated or lost stop , have an adult beverage and come bak to it another time. Ship mates? yes you can call us that. I cant speak for the others but you can call me anything you want as long as its not Late For Dinner. You can say pretty much what you want as long as it family friendly and non-inflamitory. Although the Mods tend to frown on too much non build related chit chat. Sam
  11. Doris!!!! I was trying to remember her name and it was just hiding from me. yes, she is pretty awesome. Goes to show gender does not matter. Sam
  12. Jo, Yea Bindy just kind of disappeared one day. Richards advise sounds like a winner. As far as your build you have come to the right place, there are some amazing builders here, men and women alike. Best, Sam
  13. Vossie, the waxed thread doesnt get along with water based glue in my opinion, that is why I went with the dull coat, it penetrates in. For me at least it seems to work and doesnt get stupid stiff like CA. Looking forward to your results with the fly cement. Sam
  14. Hi Caroline welcome home. Everything is clean and tidy like we came to expect. Well done. It looks like you have made your decision on the gun storage, I cant say what the factors were that drove a captain to store guns like that, however I did have to do it on my Enterprise to hide a decking issue. Sam
  15. Nice work Vossie. For me at least I have found waxed fly tying thread works better, it doesn't catch on the tiny little bits of dry skin on my fingers and separate on me. How are you managing to keep unwaxed thread together? Perhaps it the brand I am using. I have been using Testers dull coat the same way you are using fly cement, I have wondered how it worked, looks like it does the job well, no glossiness that I can see from your pictures. Sam
  16. Carl, That seems to indicate that they were pretty much standard on a square sail spar. looks like I have more iron work to do. Sam
  17. CArl, the boss wont do that unless its life and death. There was a welder once who called me at 2 in the morning to tell me "The crane just showed up and hour and a half late" I made it pretty clear that wasnt a valid reason to wake me up. Build wise Does anybody know if the a ship this size would have had Stunsail booms??I think that is what they are called. the small sails and yards that extended out beyond the yard? I dont intend to include many sails at all but I am curious if I "need" to make the iron work. None of the images I have of the Enterprise shows them employed. Sam
  18. Carl, Yea they probably compare notes!! He is actually a pretty reasonable boss, I could go in tomorrow and tell him I want next week off and he'll say "Ok what do you have on your plate at the moment?" He has never complained when I would ask to use the shop tools for side jobs or to take time off when I would photograph a local theater group 2-3 times a year. He was actually surprised when I came in at 8:30 and told him I went in at midnight. Told me I should have slept in more. That doesnt mean the hours dont get to me and I am looking forward more and more to retirement in 10 years. E-gads!! Thats still 3650 days away!!! Ok, small update time. I kept looking at my foot ropes on the jib boom and not liking how kinked up they were so off they came. The new ones hang much better. I may leave the knots off as that is when the last set kinked up, although they were a little too short also I think. I told myself I wasnt going to do the horses, but then as I was reading in TFFM and Syren instructions I suddenly found myself seizing on the lines for them. The set in the picture are attempt number 3. They were either too tight or too loose. I wont say these are just right and they do pull the Fore Stay out of alignment a bit. I may have to re-tension the Fore Stay which will probably cause a cascade of other re-dos. Hmmm perhaps I will just leave well enough alone.... Woo Hoo!!!! Almost done with the standing rigging!!! I started figuring out yards dimensions this morning. I may finish this build this year! (Who am I kidding??? We have two parade floats due at the end of November, most likely around the beginning of August I will be on a 12/6 or 12/7 schedule. 3650 days, 3650 days...) Bow Sprit and Jib Boom as they look today. I didnt tidy up the horses before I took the picture. New Foot Ropes, they actually hang even, the camera angle makes them look off. Beginnings of the Horses. Looks like I need to do some dusting. The running tackle and jib in-haul look like they are rubbing on the Fore Stay and Preventer Collars, they actually clear by close to a scale foot. Thats all Folks! Sam
  19. Most TV shows are a great big candy-like red button just waiting to be pushed for me. Better Half LOVES those CSI shows. You know the ones, where the characters are all hot; the women with low cut tops (not that I mind looking at that) and the guys are ripply muscles in tight clothes (Better Half gets eye candy too!) Hot guy/girl walks in glances at a 1/2" diameter hole and with no other information says "Looks like a Glock, 9mm. Or a tire track and "Chevy Silverado, no passenger." I have to get up and walk out before my IQ gets sucked further into negative digits. Sam
  20. Lou, Those look like a great idea. Not so much for me but Better Half - although she does comment on how poor my hearing is. She likes to sit on the sofa with an adult beverage and watch TV, I dont care for most of the shows she watches so I will read. For me, I cant read in the same room whith the tv on, too distracting. She could wear them and I could sit in the same room to read. Sam
  21. Same here. carpentry tools, loud music. When I was shooting trap and skeet there was a guy who made custom ear plugs. He would swab your ear canal with a mold release and inject silicone in partway. once it solidified - about 5 minutes he pulled it out and you had the most comfortable ear plugs ever. I dont know what the DB rating was but they were far better than anything I owned at the time. Wish I had them when I was younger, probably wouldn't have worn them though. You only appreciate what you had when you loose it. Sam
  22. J, Nice build. Umm, where do the canons go? And what are you using as a rigging plan? I was at the Winter Nationals in Pamona earlier this month. There was a battery operated wind up toy on the track as a demo. did a 9 second 1/4 mile. The speed was impressive but there is just something wrong with no Rumbly-Rumbly-VROOM! When they did there burnouts it sounded like a bicycle on wet pavement. Mark that must have been great being right there. Our seats were great for watching the races but not so great for photography. the only 3/4 frontal shots were full of people. Ahh well a good time was had regardless. Sam
  23. J! I found you, you cant hide from me. Looking good, that ships boat sure is small, next your going to be joining the PE crew. Sam
