Johann, it has been said here and elsewhere already very often. The way you are planning your work, the way you are performing it and especially the way you are able to reflect yourself and change things if necessary is simply astonishing. If you were a bridge builder, a car constructor, a rocket scientist: Be sure I would love to jump on your bridge, perform a speed run in your car and fly to Mars in your space ship. I dare to say: You are a shining example of German engineering. It is a pleasure to watch your build log and especially its constancy over the years. Thank you for posting it here for all of us!

Hello Igor, my dear friend. Your Endeavour came out fantastic, much nicer than mine with all that details and the clean work. Only the stern is a little bit too "round and bulky" for my taste. When I built mine I used the same plans you did which aren`t the clearest. I tried to make the hull in "plank on frame technic" which was a real thrill in that scale of 1:500. Hello Nenad, yes I would...... if there would be a log. I didn`t start a build log yet because my building time is very limited at the moment. The Flying Cloud hull is waiting patiently in the shelf, some deck furniture is finished but thats it. Due to 2 ill family members and lots of work my building progress is so small that it would be boring to start a log at the moment. I hope better times will come and then I will post the pictures I already took and hopefully many new then. So far I enjoy your (and others) logs and be happy with your results. Hello Rob, I just found your build log after reading your post in the "Flying Cloud Figure Head" thread. It is wonderful to see someone following the same strategies in building one of the famous clipper ships and the brilliant outcome. Your build looks wonderful, full of life and very well researched. Plus I am happy that you chose the same way of building her like I did. For my build of the Flying Cloud I used the hull halfs of an old Heller Kit in 1:200 scale. I made some modifications on it like changing the keel, planking the ebony wood part with ebony veneer stripes and the copper part with real copper foil. I replaced all the decks and planked them with maple veneer strips. All the furniture I scratched and it came out nicely so far. Just like yours. My next big task will be the masts. I will follow your log from now on and "steal" some ideas, if you don`t mind. ;-) Looking forward to see how you proceed with the rigging. I am really happy that I found a "soulmate" here that likes the clipper ships same as I do and that builds his ship in a similar way I do. Thanks for posting. Keep it up. Harry

Thanks for your comment Popeye. Much appreciated. And thanks for all the likes! The sails are made of so called "Japan paper." It is very thin paper comparable with cigarette paper. It has been stiffened with a mixture of white glue/water, after drying spray painted with matt white paint and then weathered with diluted brown Revell paint. The stripes were done with normal pencil before painting. The sails stay very thin and a little "seethru" with this method, but stiff enough to shape them and rig them. While they are wet it is better not to touch them at all, though....

Wow, Igor. As if the J Class yacht were not beautiful enough by itself.....That tiny addition in the cork makes the bottle more unique. I would only erase that branding letters from the bottle. Maybe polish with Dremel?

Hey Tom. Thanks for your interest. I just browsed my photos and found only one showing the fresh verdigris on the copper after applying vinegar/salt with a brush. I wiped away most of the verdigris after that. The hull is a 1:200 clipper ship btw. I will post photos of the current status later....Harry

So far I used only copper tape for coppering my hulls. I found the ones sold in "Tiffany" shops as very easy to handle. They come in different width and the adhesive is strong. The copper itself is coated. I gave it a sanding after the hull was finished. For weathering I applied a mixture of white vinegar essence and normal salt. After some hours your copper will turn totally green with verdigris. This can be removed with a wet brush or sponge after your taste. During my research I found that only coppered ships that are in drydock grow such big amounts of verdigris like in the pictures Tadeusz posted. The missing oxygen of a ship being in water leads to a slower oxidation process. I read that the copper turns more into "pinkish" when in contact with salt water. I found the best result for me was sanding the copper, leaving it for some month during the building phase with fingerprints, fat etc. Then i cleaned it with acetone and applied the vinegar. Then washed off the verdigris that only small amounts remained in edges. The hull has a nice finish with a mixture of copper, black and a little green then. This result was sealed with a spray of clear varnish. It stays in this appearance since years now.

Hello Tom, I just found your build log. I must say that your hull looks best of all Hannahs that i saw so far, including my own. I didn't like the white either thats why i decided to paint it black together with a satin varnish. Good that you inserted the keel deep in the hull. The deeper the better the ship will slide into the bottle. You mentioned the cannons. Mine were a but too high too. I solved this problem with sanding down the front wheels a bit. Then painted them. I didn't rig them because i found it too much at this small scale. The bowsprit got on my nerves too. I broke it twice at different positions. But since it is pure brass it is easy to repair. I managed to solder it back with no visible marks. And it was refixed so well, that i broke it at a different position the second time. I must say you are on a very good way with your Hannah. I am sure she will come out nicely and I bet you will be infected from building SIBs from now on and the next one will be a scratch model. Enjoy your built. Don't hurry. Wishing you fun. Harry
