just the mere fact that you've chosen to build such a large scratch build as this, is awe inspiringring enough. there are many ship kits out there that may not be historicaly correct......but we build them any way. some choose to change them.....some don't. what you've done so far is wonderful.......the deck looks superb. the hull looks so sleek.......hard to believe that you've pulled it off using balsa {just writing the name makes me shiver} I'm going to be picking back up on my first full rigged ship.....I'll admit it, I am rather daunted...I've never done one in wood before. I'm finding that plastic was much easier....these I've done many. I'll think of what your going to face as I do it.....the thought alone will be a great motivator

you gotta love 'em Bob........now take her out and buy some nice picture frames. can't wait to see the start of this build

I'll have to post a picture of what my part storage system looks like. it starts with a large box, in which i lined with toilet paper tubes that are cut in half. the bottles are tall, so they sit in there without too much room to move around. the tubes are spaced out so the bottles are not crowded. I haven't labeled them....I started to, but the contents change with the supply I have of any given thing.....it would be a bother to relabel them. they are organized......I have a mental idea where everything is. thanks Eric.......I hope you have one as well no signs of me slowing down any time soon

no Frank........I wish there were though. that is a bottle of 5mm single blocks. the admiral is on a few meds, and she saved all the bottles for me........makes for a neat organizer tray for all my extra parts. it does seem that way though.....since 2010, I've completed 9 ships. I think it's due to my starting this hobby at such a late age......and that when I jump into something, it's usually with both feet.......running!

I can see that there is a big difference between these two kits. did the instructions say to cut out the bulwark posts? the reason I ask is that the top rails and the belaying pin rails are a one piece part.......they are to be bent to fit over the bulwark walls. it's going to be quite a task......they are plywood. I'm not there yet....it will be interesting. nice job with the mahogany work.......the finish you describe is going to look stellar!

I wish I could be a better barometer for you......she had her share of both......lots of teak though. then she changed hands a few times and info really becomes cloudy. I wanted to get another one, and try to do her as the Portugese ship Ferreira.....nicknamed the Pequena Camisola by her crew........and later turned into a Barquentene Maria Do Amparo....very few info, if none at all about these two

now you see why I have other builds in the works........I know it sounds funny......yes, I am excentric....but you'd never know from looking at me....hee....hee. I have never rigged to this degree...a wood saling ship....done plenty of plastic in my day. it will be nice to have planking to relieve some of the tension. hopefully Sjors......you'll be doing wood work on the S.I. it would be a pity to emmerse yourself in the same turmoil. your doing some fine work there Sjors.....don't forget that. .....a man who loves clowns.....but doesn't laugh at all of life's tiniest of mistake it tightend the clutches, of all that he touches and then things start to break take a step back, to regain what ye lack do something else for yourself don't be so glum...good work, you've done some on the ship you've put on the shelf don't look at the time.....or this terrible rhyme the right time is when, you are happy again ......shoot! I can't think of anything that rhymes with existential thought

that explains it......your a southpaw! it not a bad thing....so don't get scared! LOL!!! the shrouds and dead eyes look great andy, such a neat job!

nice job on the shrouds Andy. so far I've done mine clockwise, for ease of construction. I wonder if this would play into it....whether your left or right handed?

good to see your back at it......take your time. it is good to put in missing detail that the kit doesn't have...especially if it's too big to ignore. there is always a lot of controversary about paint and fitting......and the time period in which they were present. that's a big problem with pictures......there's never an exact date in which they were taken. I ran into that big time when I did my revell kit.....I must have three different accounts concerning paint. I just picked a scheme and went with it. your doing a fine job......even if your just playing with the sub assemblies for now. when your ready to work on the big picture........the build will be that much quicker. go at a steady pace....I know I'm not going anywhere.........I'm sure others aren't either.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
