  1. Good choice on the distributor and coil vs. a magneto. Most of the low budget guys didn't go with mags until "the car could afford it".
  2. Yep, it's now a dead link and probably has been that way for some time. With upgrades to software, often these pages that were referenced were deleted as the info wasn't applicable any more.
  3. Functioning torpedoes an option? I'm kidding but I have seen it done. Ok... on the serious side I have probably a dumb question, will there be a way to vent the warm air out of the hull or won't that be necessary?
  4. Thanks for the support. The idea of a second build is working. I finally got my head wrapped around how to convert the plans to wood as basically it's just the equivalent of Navy Board drawings. After staring the light finally turned on. I'll be opening a build log once I get into sorting out my method... POB, POF, POB with balsa fillers? Decisions, decisions. The stress hasn't subsided but it's manageable at this point. So I'll be continuing on Licorne while lofting what I need for Belle Poule.
  5. I use a "used" blade for cutting ebony and rely on filing/sanding to get the piece to the shape I want. I also try to keep several new blades of each tooth count on hand so if a blade does start showing it's age and wear, I have a spare new one on hand.
  6. If no one has a hard, fast answer, when I had a case built, the builder said measure and add 4" to the length and width for the inside measurement. The outside will vary on glass thickness and whether you use decorative or structural framing at the corners, etc. Your mileage may vary as this isn't set in concrete.
  7. Every ship would be different depending on the "owner" be it Navy or commercial, the Captain, and the crew. And then one has to take into consideration life on land at the time. Things were a bit harsher and harder back then.
  8. I had quick run through the memory bank.. nope, no Henry J that I recall at a track. Many of the gassers of that era (but not a majority) were the Willis. I suspect it had a bit longer wheel base and possibly a bit more "engine room". Wheelbase gets a bit short and high horsepower does make the car real squirrelly. I thought the cross-ram option was to allow it to be used on the NASCAR circuit?
  9. Welcome to MSW, Zee. I would suggest that you do a build log of your first effort and make it a relatively simple model with not more than one mast. A build log is the best way get you feedback and answers to questions and you'll make some friends along the way.
  10. Pawel, I know that I haven't commented much, but I am in total awe of your work.
  11. Jason, the owner of Crown did have a shutdown due to a family emergency. It took some time to sort out but he's back and shipping wood. I've used both Crown and Syren and heartily recommend them.
  12. As for glue, I've never used Titebond. My only experience with Elmer's Wood Glue. Works for me so I've not gone exploring. On the build log, start it when you're ready. Probably having the kit in hand is good as first posts give a peek as to what's in the box.
  13. Totally agree on the ears. Even though I wore the "Mickey Mouse" style of ear protection in the Marines and at the drag strip, I do have hearing loss from it.
  14. A real kit bash then? Sounds great, count me in to watch this.
  15. You might use the search function to find other builds of the same kit and see how they did it.
  16. When in doubt, do what a lot of do... use the search function to find other builds of the same kit. Often different builders will have different ways of doing the same thing depending on their skills and experience. It saves a lot of head scratching and missteps.
  17. Hi Jo, Welcome to MSW. You've had some great advice from everyone else so I won't repeat it. I will point you to the data base here: http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-plans-and-research.php The "ship-model-plans-and-research" as two good articles on kit selections and what to expect. The "ship-model-materials-and-tools" section has a good article on basic tools and another on tools not to bother with. Once you pick your model, have a few tools like Exacto knite, some sandpaper, etc. start a build log (you'll get help) and have some fun building.
  18. Hi Alan, Welcome to MSW. What Chris said... I'm too far away but have visited the museum and we do have some of the members here at MSW. Please do start a build log as it's the best way to get help and meet fellow builders.
  19. The Belle Poule plans are at the printshop being reduced to the size I need. Once I get them back and examine how I'll build her (bulkhead or frames) I'll start a log. Nothing like having two ships in the stocks.
