Interesting thoughts about doing the model and a separate rigging kit. Looking at the Sphinx, there's not that much in the box but yes it could be a "part 2 of the kit" thing. I'm looking at this from a builder perspective who's display area is limited and thus, masting and rigging from here on is out of the question. But, if for manufacturing, packaging, etc. reasons it's included, so be it. I'll just stash those things for now and if the time comes I have more room, I'd consider adding the masts and rigging. I learned a long time ago that there's such things as a "build and forget" model.

Since cost seems to be an issue with many of us, especially on our first models, I suggest the following: Do a search here for "block tumbler". There have been more than a few posts as I recall on making one's own tumbler. It can round the edges of the blocks for a more real look. As for rope... have look at topics on Syren Rope Walk. It's reasonably priced and works very well from what I've read. There's other rope walks but cost a lot more an I would say hold off on them until you done some rope on Syren rope walk.

F-86F-30 Sabre by Egilman - Kinetic - 1/32nd scale

I'd suggest you take the printing part to a new thread in the 3D printing area. I think you'd get some help from the 3D experts there which could be a plus. Just do a couple posts for "history" there and up to where you are now. -
Welcome to MSW, Jim. I'm in agreement with the others about starting a log.

M3 Lee Tank by CDW - Miniart - 1:35 Scale - FINISHED
mtaylor replied to CDW's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Ah... I'm in. For a minute there I thought it was one in the Haunted Tank comic book series but that was M3 Stuart, -
Wow.... both amazed and intimidated though the thought of James' instructions do ease the intimidation. But the result will be truly epic.

Looking good, Glen.... really good. As for that aft line for the mizzon sail. I had a hard time seeing what was missing and this on an enlarged photo. If you can't fix it, I'd say ignore it since at normal viewing distance it'll be overlooked as there is so much to look at.

You're lacking clutter???? I though that was a necessary evil. -
Questions Before I Buy My First Ship

Little things to think about for tools.... T-pins and some wood clothes pins. You'd be surprised how useful these can be. And yes.. bandaids are a must. -

Sounds like a good plan, Egilman. The concept of "rest" means different things to different people. To some it's stay in bed, don't do much. To others (myself included) it's more like get back into life but with limits that are movable. Like no marathons, no whacking firewood, get tired then take a short nap. I did this also after my valve replacement. -
Work Table Recommendations ?
mtaylor replied to DanB's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I'm a slacker I guess. My main work bench is "student desk" from a office store. About 4 feet long and 2 feet dee[ (+/-). The other "benches" I use for holding my power tools and are all "work benches" from the local Do-It-Yourself store. -
Richard, you won't see many models planked like you showed as historically, they weren't planked that way. Now for something where the hull is completely painted (say an iron/steel ship) it would probably work.

Berlin 1674 by Strelok - 1:100
mtaylor replied to DaKea90's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1501 - 1750
I recommend opening a new build log on the Castell Friedrichsburg. Leave this one here in case you decide to come back this model. Otherwise, things get confusing to readers. The Monfeld book is a good resource. Just be careful though as there are some errors in it, I use it as my starting point for research and then dive deeper with other resources. -

That's great news, Egilman. Get some rest and follow the doc's orders. -
Questions Before I Buy My First Ship
mtaylor replied to Magarkus's topic in New member Introductions
Magargus, Welcome to MSW. I would recommend you read this first before deciding on which model: As for tools, basic rule of thumb is to "buy them as you need them". It's cheaper and you're buying what you need, not what some hobby shop or website says: here's what you need. I suggest also.. go here: https://thenrg.org/resource/articles And look at the "Plans" and the "Tools" sections. There's some articles on what to expect in a model and also an article on basic tools. Worst case... open a topic in the Shop Notes area. Specifically in the Tools area and ask. -
Keith, This is terrible news and you have my condolences on the loss of your son. I would suggest that you pause the build and when you feel up to it, continue it as a tribute in his honor.

Congratulations. From everything I've ever heard, Manitowoc has some stiff competition at their show. And you did a double win. Even more impressive.

Digital compass / dividers?
mtaylor replied to CPDDET's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Bob, I Googled "Weems navigation dividers instructions " and got a pile of hits for "how to use them".... https://www.google.com/search?q=Weems+navigation+dividers+instructions&rlz=1C1ZCEB_enUS832US832&ei=JGKBYrvSEKTPkPIPhqSNkAY&ved=0ahUKEwi79Jfeq-L3AhWkJ0QIHQZSA2IQ4dUDCA4&uact=5&oq=Weems+navigation+dividers+instructions&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBQghEKABOgcIABBHELADOgUIIRCrAkoECEEYAEoECEYYAFCeRFj6b2Dtc2gBcAF4AIABiwGIAeoLkgEEMC4xM5gBAKABAcgBCMABAQ&sclient=gws-wiz I'm not sure which ones are for your set.
