  1. Wow.... this is an impressive refit. And what Canute said about this being your ship, do it your way... he's right.
  2. There are brass nuts that might (or not) be of suitable size but you'll need to some searching. Since this is brass, there's Birchwood-Kasey that offers a brass blackening liquid and works very well. Also, consider what Allen suggested about copper but nuts at scale may still be a problem. I don't remember where I saw it, but I have recollection of small plastic nuts being used and it's the source I don't recall.
  3. I'm alsoi in the PNW and I'd recommend a case. With smokey summers (even if it's just prescribed burns) and the winds coming in off shore do stir up a lot of dust... volcanic dust it seems. Go for a display case. You won't regret it and the admiral will also appreciate not having a dust magnet on the loose.
  4. Welcome to MSW, Dave. Yes.. the Billing kit is not for beginners. Historically, their instructions are not for the faint of heart and sketchy is an understatement as they are really just a guideline as the plans are the important part. Good advise has been given about starting simple and also build logs. You might look into the ModelExpo's beginner's kits.
  5. Not a bad idea, OC. I would look at it as not scraping the kit but "changing it".
  6. Hopefully you can find square stock at the size you need. Is 3D printing an option for those?
  7. Congratulations on a very well done and great looking model. I hope we'll see some photos of her in her new home.
  8. I have a deep appreciation for the manuals and those who do them. James is exceptional. I say this as former tech writer who did manuals often times without ever seeing the equipment and only the plans. My hat is tipped and I raise a salute.
  9. The area I live in goes from 0% humidity in summer to 100% in winter. With cotton thread I learned after my first rigged model to "pain" the ropes with a mix of 50/50 water and white glue during the dry season. Once that dries, humidity doesn't affect it.
  10. This has been one of those models that all one can say "wow! wow!!!!" And the display is perfect. Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder.
  11. MSW = My special world. Nothing could be closer to the truth than that. Take your time to breathe and cry if you need to.
  12. Welcome to MSW, Robert. If you have explored this site much, we do have a section for non-ship modeling. In the kit area, you'll find lots of plastic builds. So feel free to make yourself at home and enjoy the journey.
  13. Depends on the definition of "more". I think you'll know when it's done.
  14. Edited... never mind my asking about a log. It just popped up while I was typing.
  15. Welcome to MSW. Have you done a search here for Pilar? There are some build logs and it's probable that someone still has the plans that they might let you have. I do suggest you introduce your self here and then make a post here for the plans: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/13-discussions-for-ships-plans-and-project-research-general-research-on-specific-vessels-and-ship-types/
  16. One thing (among several) I've found that works is window fan that blows out. I open a window on the opposite of the apartment to help set up a draft. When I can't open a window, I use portable air filter system. I also run a shop vac set up where I'm sanding/cutting.
  17. Lovely progress and I like the way you are approaching this.
  18. Harry, there's not a high spot on the deck is there? Have you put the superstructure on a piece of glass as "level test "?
  19. As they went deep into the exploration of the Wasa wreck in the museum, they discovered that her carvings were not monochromatic but rich in colors much like what you are doing. I feel you're pretty close on your philosophy and implementation. Edit... looks like Bill posted while I was typing away and we both agree on your decorative choices.
  20. Beautiful model and a very appropriate display setting.
