M3 Lee Tank by CDW - Miniart - 1:35 Scale - FINISHED
mtaylor replied to CDW's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Looking at the one truck you have finished, I don't think it's over-engineered as like the rest of the model it looks great. -
Well, why not? There's rivet counters, treenail counters, etc. Why not a new category... spoke counters? LOL.

replacement X-ACTO blade #30
mtaylor replied to Peanut6's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Kev, Can you post a photo of the blade? Not sure what #30 even looks like. Googling only comes up with a 30 degree blade not a #30. -
I agree with Allan but say that it should be checked and re-marked. The reason is the first planking adds to "volume" of the hull slightly and you may need one plank for maybe two depending on the thickness of the first layer. Better to know before laying planks than later finding during the planking.

Welcome to MSW. Do make an introduction. As for the log, do you know the member's name?

But with a body you only need to carry it one way. I suggest some sort of wheeled dolly or cart and with tires to match the terrain. Might even need a small crane attached to the cart.

Regarding the question...I'm of the opinion that it's your ship, your model and you are the owner/captain. And add to that your vision of the final display will also be a part of the decision. In many ways, this is like deciding on a model.... Powered or sail? Warship or merchant, Size? Wood or ???? Scratch or kit? All are personal decisions. Don't pick one that you're not comfortable with.

Acceptable on one side? More like brilliant and perfect from what I see. I think I'll give up model ships and take up snipe hunting.

That is a really great modification, Jerry. Very seldom (if ever) do we see the wheel and the rudder actually work.

NAIAD 1797 by Bitao - 1:60
mtaylor replied to Bitao's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1751 - 1800
I think you have the right shape of those supports and just need the pump "arms" bent to shape. -
I looked at your link and then continued down the thread. Lots of interesting old videos there. Thanks for posting it.

Wow... what an airplane. Yes, probably too much detail at the scale of the ship but nothing stopping you from doing a larger model the airplane to perhaps display along with the ship.

If I remember right, not only was Roma the pride and flagship but also was "supposed" to be used for "official visits" and receive many visiting dignitaries like heads of state, etc. She was a show piece for sure albeit one with teeth.

HMCSS Victoria 1855 by BANYAN - 1:72
mtaylor replied to BANYAN's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1851 - 1900
Pat, I don't recall if you'be tried it yet, but there is a paste/putty for heat sinking bits that need soldering. I've used some in the past and it worked very well though what I was soldering was larger. Sorry but I don't recall the name of the product or where I bought it or even if they still make something like that.- 993 replies

There's only two ways that I know of clean off CA from tools... flame or acetone. Acetone takes longer. If the tools are plastic... all bets are off.

Beyond amazing to me. Just trying to wrap my mind around this planking makes my head hurt.

Regarding "absolutes" in science... I remember my physics professor made a statement that I remember well. "There are no absolutes... now is the speed of light being the fastest possible speed in space?". The answer was "At this time, yes. But maybe not in the future if someone discovers how to go faster.".

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
