Mostly that huge rail that runs around it. To me it looks as though it would be a tripping hazard or at the very least a major pain in the shins. In low visibility and rough water I could see a lot of falling down over that thing. Then again, I guess like most things if you are around it all the time you would get used to it. :)

Thank you all! I have the aft deck nearly finished. The pumps and navigation lights are what are left. I made the bollards, stove pipe, skylight, fife rail, mast coat, and techically "started" the main mast. Really, it is just thinned at the base to fit in the mast hole. The windows are ca, so they are still somewhat shiny, but have a bit of a more dirty look. I had to shrink my self to get some of the photos on deck :D

P.S. Yes, the fife rail is a little too close to the skylight. It is a crowded deck!

Most of the parts are simple and only need a little work before installation. They don't take much time, but I think I just might be in a little bit of a hurry. Don't worry! I will slow down :D!

Continues to come along nicely, Elijah.

As to the strange cockpit, I suspect it served 2 purposes -

(1) provided a spot to sit while manning the helm or passing time.  They carried multiple pilots (as many as 6 or 8) when on station, and the pilots were not essential to operating the vessel itself (there was a separate crew of 4 sailors, a cook and a the boatkeeper, an apprentice pilot, responsible for operating the vessel when none of the pilots remained on board).

(2) provided a measure of protection from any water that came over the deck to prevent it getting into the cabin.  These were fairly small vessels, comparatively, and often provided pilot services in rough conditions, beating into a sea to disembark the pilot onto the ship they were meeting. Indeed, they frequently ranged far off shore, competing with other pilot boats to reach an incoming ship first.

In addition, as pointed out by Chuck in his practicum, the deck within the cockpit would be about a foot lower than the surrounding deck - the cockpit coaming also provided a measure of trip and fall protection for the crew working the deck.

There is some good description of these boats in Leather, J. 2002. The Gaff Rig Handbook: History, Design, Techniques, Developments. 2nd ed. Brooklin, ME: Woodenboat Publications.

The aft deck is finished. All I had to do was add the navigation lights and pumps. Next is the fore deck, which the most complicated part will probably be the companionway. I have experience making one, so I doubt this one will take longer. The fore deck is a lot less crowded, so I don't think it will take long. I have already jinxed myself :D! Anyway, more later. Here are the pictures.

P.s. I noticed it looks like there is a splotch of ca on the cap rail next to the belaying pin. I checked, and it is only a shadow. That had me worried :o!

Looks good Elijah, it is coming together real fine.

Nice work Elijah. Don't start with "The fore deck is a lot less crowded, so I don't think it will take long." You should take the time needed, you are not in a rush, it's not F1, or Indy 500 (to keep it in your neck of the woods) have fun

Oh no! You mentioned rigging! You will get me rushing! I don't believe I will add sails, as that would mean I would need some very fine cloth, a sewing machine, more rigging line, and, most of all, no instructions. I do plan on adding sails next build, but that is thinking way too far ahead. I have to admit, after going sailing a little over a week ago, I am looking forward to rigging. Maybe I should go see Dr. Per. Is Indy 500 a race?

Elijah - like Bob said, the little items are what turn a model into a ship. And even though they are small they can still have details. Check as many period pictures/paintings as you can. Get a feel for how the work was done on board. You may find you can add (or remove) items for more realism.

I finished the fore deck. I was able to slow myself down, but I still have it finished. Next up is the bowsprit and bowsprit rigging. Most of the pieces on the fore deck just needed some painting and wire bending. Here are the images.

Improve on you photoshop skills to strat with mate. Upside down pictures won't do ;)

Some close-ups, from the hull too, would be nice. I want to be able to give you an honest opinion (even if you don't like what I have to say) I expect nothing less from you on my builds

Nice work! Getting everything on the deck finished is a big milestone! The bowsprit goes pretty quick in the Phantom, and before you know it you'll be finishing up rigging!

I am not almost finished with the boat, but am almost finished with the bowsprit. Next up are two cleats on the onboard side and bowsprit rigging. I hope these images work. Progress has been slow with everything going on lately. I hope to get back to pace late this month. We will see. Anyway, let's hope these images fit!
