Finishing the anchors.  With the anchors of the Mary Rose as an example.

The stock is always slightly shorter than the anchor

20221213_195618.thumb.jpg.992d4fa288513d3a41197c16c606a7db.jpg

The stock has been sanded to the correct shape. And there is a combination of tree nails and bolts

make the rings.
This is not soldered, the risk of melting plastic is too great. The rings are wrapped with black thread

20221220_134341.thumb.jpg.91fce877a672e58a23fe7f417f848098.jpg20221220_134822.thumb.jpg.d5bae887e45fe6b4a5316979a12ab1c4.jpg20221220_164537.thumb.jpg.f9930c6938ae54d536b170481ba5edff.jpg

Painted.

the wood is collored with thinned light grey and polished.

The metal (plastic) is first painted in black, then a wash met thinned metal paint. And last a wash with rust color

And, finally decided.
The next project will be the Mary Rose scale 1/48

First, a happy 2023 for everyone.

The anchor cable.
I made this about 2 years ago.

Lesson learned. Never treat a rope with diluted PVA glue before using it, as the rope will become stiff and unmanageable. But,too late to change now.

The anchors are in place and secured to the cable as best as possible.

The anchor David is on deck. The crew still has to store it in the hold (after the New Year's party 😉)

next flags (still experimenting for now)

The anchor cable :  part 2. or better, plan B

Looking in my Mary Rose books I found this.
Thinner cables are ok 👍

20230102_140150.thumb.jpg.cba92d116e44382b9928178378c632e7.jpg
And ... Cotton rope of a reasonably correct diameter

20230102_140405.thumb.jpg.e127cee982aed58b7245071e2419b2ac.jpg20230102_140409.thumb.jpg.8a19a00b6f1b2d605c2dcf05ffe2b318.jpg

This flexible thinner rope gives me the opportunity to do this way of tying

20230103_084345.thumb.jpg.9fa8a8a6df9dc3918be0d7ed9336b10b.jpg

Testing. Still needs to be treated and wheatered.

Looks better to me.

Anchor cables, 2nd edition
The old anchor cables have been cut off and hidden in the hole.
The 2nd edition looks better than the first to me.

20230107_113727.thumb.jpg.4e3ae2bef7d87e7b3006741184c08fd8.jpg20230107_113833.thumb.jpg.e43f711d0cee3efa5de3e2dea78a4353.jpg20230107_113802.thumb.jpg.bc5e905b9ac9720767203613f80df30c.jpg

2 anchor buoys have been made.
Like the other anchor accessories, they still have to be stored in the hold.

The flags

First some research, the "what did they look like and where to place them"

20230107_114009.thumb.jpg.818d6fcd826382f60de48a7aa7d2f442.jpg

Design.
The only things I can handle a bit on a computer are Word and Excell. So I made design in excell.
These are printed on the printer at work. I can print them there at in one time with front and back.
The alignment took a while (paper, ink and labor at the boss's expense 😇.) It is a pity that this printer only accepts paper.
This excel file will be posted next week at work

flags, further experiments.

Based on a great idea from 72Nova  (post 164)

Today I managed to attach tissue paper to plain paper and print it on the work printer.

Flags can be printed on the front and back of the (standard) printing paper.
Or just on one side to be glued together.
Excel is free to use

vlaggen.xlsx

@72Nova  Thanks for the idea

Flags
At first sight a successful experiment :dancetl6:

the tissue paper is taped to the standard printing paper. And came out of the printer without getting stuck.

20230113_175743.thumb.jpg.33a075c2aa5190d56c4d99593321758c.jpg
The tissue has been cut loose

20230113_180113.thumb.jpg.415223ff0033c12365d34083b779f788.jpg
the flags are glued together and somewhat wrinkled.

20230114_132353.thumb.jpg.1b2b5fa3b560c3cffaf4a04b97ef3a39.jpg

after drying overnight.

20230114_132501.thumb.jpg.5d91216eeb31cff6cf580e94c5a4fa24.jpg

Now attach these to the masts.
20230114_154359.thumb.jpg.c6b9c621508b351754ce11631bd4eb30.jpg

I'm going to follow this method, it's the most common.

from the book "Prins Willem" of Herman Ketting.

Hi Patrick, huge congratulations!

The model is wonderful, but just as good is your ability to finish a very long, arduous build. Have you noticed that, for some reason, it is only sailing ship models that are suitable for beautifying prestigious spaces like living rooms in houses or halls in residences?

You said another one was the Mary Rose...?

🙂

The finished model.

Thanks to everyone for the following, likes and positive comments throughout this long build
This was my first time building a ship model from scratch.
It was fun, and worth repeating.

Patrick,

I remember several years ago when you began this model and were shaping the hull with an angle grinder thinking,  “This isn’t going to turn out well!”🤣  Was I ever wrong.  Your skill, perseverance, and intellectual curiosity has produced a beautiful and historically plausible model.  Well done!

I have enjoyed following your progress and am looking forward to Mary Rose.

And yes, the trick with the angle grinder was indeed  a little scary for me too 😇😉
