Continuing planking the deck and started with the nibbing.  Once I had a close look at it, it turns out that's it's not that difficult.  It's just hard getting clean precise cuts.  And of course it's a slow process but I'm progressing non the less.

I know I haven't been posting much lately but there really isn't much to add to the build.  I try to spend at least an hour a night but find it hard to spend most nights in my workroom. However I am still moving forward and making progress.  Here is the latest.

20170509_191507_resized.thumb.jpg.0641e459674bf8e22fda1c5139f8e457.jpg20170509_192046_resized.thumb.jpg.ef84a15e742181b9b761bbaab8c328ca.jpg20170510_191048_resized.thumb.jpg.01761d81bc90decda5c8ba26e88395af.jpg20170509_191502_resized.thumb.jpg.bca458b42f6931be331bdd917ddc2372.jpg

This boat is labour intensive but very satisfying.  The nibbing, I thought, was going well but the pictures don't seem to agree.  Pictures show way too much detail.  I almost have the foredeck finished then will start on the aft.  I have been trying to sand as I go which I think is a good idea.  I also have been using a scraper to remove glue residue which helps.  I have changed glues and am now using Weldbond which seems good.  The best thing about Weldbond is that it dries clear.  I liked Lepages Carpenters Glue but it always left a yellow residue.  I'm enjoying my time in the shop and have been enjoying this build albeit as much as I can spend on it.

One last note I want to mention is that I have fully converted over to scalpels.  They are so much nicer to work with over hobby knives.  Swann Morton is a really great product.

It's great to see progress Derek.  I feel similarly about photos - I often like the look of the real thing more than I like the photos I take.  I think this especially true when we are planking hulls and decks as there isn't as much visually interesting in the frame so our eyes focus on any small irregularities (or worse - if we know of a small problem area and are drawn to look at it!)

The photos of your work and your nibbing  look pretty good to my eye.  I didn't try the nibbing or the curved quarterdeck planking that I could have tackled - probably a cop out on my part.  We learn by doing.

Still fun isn't it?

I finally finished the planking of the fore deck.  The nibbing could have been done better but as I went along I discovered better ways of doing it and improved on my methods.  Another example of practice makes perfect you a little better.

I started planking the quarterdeck.

I thought the nibbing (if that's what it's called) on the two outer planks turned out quite well.

It is cool to be able to see into the hull in this kit.  I guess that means that your deck planks are 1/16" thick like the hull planks?  Presumably all the deck planks will be full lenght?

Move'n right along!

Thanks Ian.

I've been working on planking the quarter deck.  It's a long but straight forward process. Again, my time available has been limited but I manage to make slow progress.  I've starting the nibbing on the quarter deck which doesn't seem as straight forward as the foredeck.  I'll post pictures in the very near future.

Here are the latest pics of my Bluenose build.  In the second pic you can see some wood filler I've added to try to fill in some gaps.  I'm not too happy how the boards line up at the aft end but I think most of it will be hidden by the rails.

Well it's been a couple of weeks since my last post.  I haven't been able to spend much time in the shipyard, we have been enjoying our backyard, spending time meeting and hanging out with neighbours and the usual summer chores.  The quarter deck planking is almost done, perhaps one or two more planks per side for completion.  I'm hoping there isn't much on the calendar this weekend so I can finish the planking and start the upper bulwarks.  Will post progress pics soon.

Derek,

Sometimes life interferes with modeling, which is the way it ought to be. This is not our profession.  Nibbing is certainly a learning experience and your aft deck planking looks good (better than mine did). Skills learned.

Enjoy building.

I finished the deck.  It was very repetitive and tedious.

20170618_161518_resized.thumb.jpg.ad3cbe0d66b49decd005cb24f9d9896b.jpg

I also decided to try my luck at adding the scuppers to the bulwarks.  I've scaled them off the drawing and used a small file to cut them in.  Luckily the width of the file matches the scupper size, I just had to mark the depth and file down to the line.  I'm hoping they will line up with the false frame timbers.

20170618_161524_resized.thumb.jpg.6f6e84aa56f94e99c27d44d2d98e8cd5.jpg

Now on to more repetitive and tedious work one scupper and false frame timber at a time.

Just a quick update to let you all know I haven't closed the dry dock.  There is so much going on this summer.  The Admiral got a new job but she works most weekends and will be starting on evenings soon leaving the housework chores and kids to me (my kids are 9 and 11).  I don't mind helping out but it limits my time working on the Bluenose.  Plus, when I do have free time I like to spend it outside enjoying the beautiful weather.  I spend time on this forum reading other build logs although I haven't commented on a lot of them.  I would imagine that aside from a half hour here or there, I won't get back to serious building until September / October but I will be back and look forward to it.

I find it's hard to stay away from the Bluenose.  I have managed to set some time aside.

I cut in the scuppers and added the upper planking.  According to the practicum I'm using it suggests doing this before installing the false frame timbers.  Things didn't exactly come together as tightly as I hoped but I think I can fix it when I do add the timbers.

20170721_172512_resized.thumb.jpg.3f4073f967d4ec9f4e853995a71c1880.jpg20170721_172517_resized.thumb.jpg.0d4c96fcb7da570a47e8dcc85c0a9173.jpg20170724_185343_resized.thumb.jpg.856d6d1d3d3936a877fc7df327eaca55.jpg20170724_184112_resized.thumb.jpg.2926e7cbd49b60748692af052e1fe706.jpg

Another problem I had to deal with was adding the stern transom.  The practicum suggested rounding the filler piece.  I had difficulties with that and went through a couple of tries that ended up in the garbage.

20170726_175830_resized.thumb.jpg.bbc2b5310cffe93f58fc2abc4fe97670.jpg20170726_184328_resized.thumb.jpg.4bcecf916172f7aea405eb0bda537e40.jpg20170726_184340_resized.thumb.jpg.b69f684f9944834f9d718df171bdfb36.jpg

I decided to square everything up which really helped me and I fitted the piece quite easily.

Looking good mate, I particularly like your scuppers and the approach you took in making them. I am going to do this for mine as I am at the same stage as you now. One question did you gang port and starboard planks together to get a consistent result and if so was there any probs doing it that way. Just looking out for pitfalls.

Per, my thought process is that I don;t strive for a perfect finish.  I don't want it to look like showroom quality, I want it to look used, a little worn.  I've sanded the deck with 150 grit and was going to go to higher grits but I feel that the deck looks like people have walked on it and dragged things across it.

Jason, I ganged the port planks together and the starboard planks together but not both together.  I was going to gang all together but I knew that this wouldn't work because there are less scuppers on the port planks.  I was surprised how quickly this went.  The wood is soft and the file went through like butter.

Thanks for the comments.

I had installed the upper planking and the false frame timbers and was not happy with the results.

So, what does one typically do when one is not happy with the outcome

I removed it all and decided I will start over again.

20170803_182524_resized_1.thumb.jpg.45ac124ffdb7714025129b30a07897a4.jpg

The practicum suggests adding the upper planking to the bulkheads, then installing the false frame timbers while at the same time cutting out the bulkheads as their alignment won't match.  I tried cutting out one of the bulkheads and it was a tedious task. This time I'm thinking of cutting off the bulkheads prior to installing any upper planking.  I will then install all the false frame timbers using the plans to determine placement.  Once done, I will mark the location of them on a plank so I can cut in the scuppers.  Then I will install the upper planking trying to get the joints as tight as possible.  It sounds a little energetic but in my head I think it can be done.

If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea
