Hi Phil, and please excuse the invasion of your postings.

Perhaps a solution would be to provide netting and stuff with hammocks

to hide any botched fixings to the ship's rail.

See sketch below.

Two eyebolts tuned in at the bottom with a gap between the ends for a fixing nail

and brass wire soldered both sides. (Eyes should be thro' 90 degrees)IMG_0862.thumb.jpeg.fb08d5ef99451555e9b6052296187e3a.jpeg

Should give a sturdy fixing.

Sam.

Still working hammock cranes:

The poop deck hammock cranes are now complete:

I kept knocking buckets off while installing the hammock cranes on the railing overlooking the quarterdeck.  I had to repair a bunch of them.

I’ve been dreading getting to the netting, but it’s time to bite that bullet.

Like my saying says, “The hardest part is deciding to try.”

So, I’m just going to make it.

I am using beige fishnet material for my netting, following pictures I’ve seen of the Victory.

We’ll see how this goes.

The fishnet failed.  The mesh is the right size, but the fibers are way too thick.  It doesn’t look right, so I removed it.

Rereading Von Monfeld, he suggested the use of open weave tulle.

Fortunately, I found a roll of white tulle in a giant box of craft stuff we found at a yard sale.  I cut a yard off the end of it and stuck it in a strong cup of tea to stain it over night.

I have everything I need to start on my next build, the French Ironclad Magenta, and also the French Ironclad Solferino.

However, I want to finish Victory before I begin construction on Magenta.  To that effect, I have my first piece of test netting ready to install.

I’ve been rigging the hammock cranes.  I’m running the lower two lines first, along the inside of the hammock cranes, and then I’ll put the netting over it, on the inside.  I’ll be securing the top line to the netting and securing the netting to the ends of the hammock cranes.96F53FDA-C174-4BA7-A8EF-0B381C7B0EBC.thumb.jpeg.4c51b3c539ab2c000f8832faca3f4db5.jpeg

It’s really slow going.  I keep breaking the hammock cranes from the top of the bulwarks.

It’s drying again.

I’m going to make hammocks when I get all of the hammock cranes in place and rigged.

The last time I tried doing hammock cranes was on a Revell 1/96 Constitution, 25 years ago.  It didn’t end well back then.  This is probably what made me dread these so badly.

Excellent point.  I’m not sure.  I will try it on another set and we will see.

The first side is ready for netting, unfortunately it isn’t the side, I cut it for, lol.

Otherwise, making progress slowly but surely.

I’m getting frustrated with this build again.

I am going to step away for a bit and work on my Magenta for a while.

But, I’ll be back shortly.  I’ve spent too much time and money to ever abandon Victory.  I just need a break.

That’s why I keep a stash of smaller projects. Sometimes you just need to step away. 👍 I can’t just sit it out, gotta work on another short term build. 😎

You are doing a great job on Victory, she will always be waiting for you.

Do you have a build log on Magenta?

Thank you very much!

Yes, Magenta is over in the 1851-1900 section of the scratch builds.  She’s still in the planning stage.

The accessory build which I’m using for research is the Solferino in the 1851-1900 section of the kit builds.

I got a soldering station today.

The hammock cranes (which severely aggravated me and directly led to the break that started the Magenta build) will be ripped off and have posts soldered to the bottom so they can be pinned in place to avoid the continual breakage that had been happening.

My Solferino is entering the final stages of the build and I’m going to be resuming work on Victory when she is done.

Victory is nearly complete and I really need to finish her.

I just bought David Antscherl’s Sail Making Supplement, which is also needed for the Victory, the Solferino and the Mercury to make all 3 models look right with sails.

Shipyard Models has a complete rigging fitting set for the Victory in 1/96 scale.  I saved it in my Ages Of Sail Cart and am going to try and get Admiral-Claus to get it for me for Christmas this year.

Admiral Claus bought me the Victory Rigging Fitting Set.

I also bought everything for a complete set of silk span sails.

Needless to say, once I clear Solferino off my shipyard desk, I am making a finishing run on Victory.

Quick side note: me and hammock cranes have never gotten along, but winter is coming along and I’m going to need something to do, and Victory is getting finished.

I bought 150 sheets of cream colored gift wrapping tissue paper off Amazon, for $12.

I know it works the same because I have covered balsa models with it before.

However, let me see how it works for making my set of sails for Solferino.
