Yes I agree that Ena is the more beautiful yacht and the deck embellishments are far superior. The thing that is drawing me towards Cangarda is this:-

I think it would be fun to include details of the engine room with the skylights open to allow viewing. Ena's engine room is below the main cabin and therefore not visible. However I have a couple of months before i decide finally.

Just catching up, and what beautiful modeling you've done Keith!  Such clean, precise and detailed work.

Happy to hear that you're planning a new build and to me, your candidate is a great choice.  The engine room details would be unique and a surprise visual draw.  But I do also agree with the other members that Ena is a real looker.  Whatever you end up building will no doubt be extraordinary.

Keith, you could model the engines, boilers, and engine room components as a separate display. With your tool skills a steam engine model is right up your alley.

Enough of this speculative chat about the future and back to the job in hand - But thank you all for your contributions.

Time to tidy up some of those loose ends.

Those of you with long memories will remember that many many months ago I made the pin rails for the foot of the masts. With the blocks installed around the masts the pin rails could be glued in place. As you might imagine tying off the halyards was a bit of a pain ( I marvel at the patience of all you fully rigged ship builders).

You may also remember that I only completed the fore and aft standing rigging to ease access for the sail and halyard installation. Now it is time to move on to the abeam standing rigging. But first I needed a few more shackles to attach the turnbuckles.

DSC02152.thumb.JPG.879e74b7cb5453020ea2f9e2f5ea2e5b.JPG

Luckily my storage system for long ago made parts is working well. You may remember the turnbuckles.

DSC02155.thumb.JPG.dbbfa8229e514afda9b0a46b1cc59a3b.JPG

The 16 turnbuckles were then attached to the rails with the afore mentioned shackles.

Keith, I can’t think of anything else that hasn’t been said already. So at the sake of sounding repetitive, WOW! Beautiful work on the rope coils. I’ll definitely be sad to see this build end.

Superb, Keith, as usual.

Were the rope coils occasionally hung on the belaying pins or were they always on deck?

Bit of both Dan, also they are often just dumped in a jumbled mess on the deck. There are so many and given the mast height they are so bulky that hanging all of them from the belaying pins would probably be impractical.  At the scale I am modelling it becomes virtually impossible.

Quite true. I've done some sailing on a the boat in my avatar and the peak and throat hallyard are always on deck when the main sail is hoisted. Same goes for the mizzen sail hallyard. However I have to disagree about the "mess on the deck" 😉

Even if the surplus is just laying on deck it is stoved in a figure eight with the loose end at the bottom, under the pile. The rationale for this is that then it will not tangle if the sail has to come down in a hurry. When the sail is down and belayed, then the surplus is coiled and hanged on the belaying pin because it is much less meters of rope at that point.

Happy modelling!

Keith,

Just so happens that I live in Belfast Maine which is on Penobscot bay.

Cangarda is owned by someone who has a house on Islesboro island In Penobscot bay and has Cangarda hauled out and stored at Front Street ship yard in Belfast.  I have walked past and admired her for years.  She was on blocks and jacks this past summer, sitting outside.  She was not put over and I understand that she is for sale.

I used to have pictures of her when tied up at the dock.

She is currently back in the shed for the winter.  I have some access via our son in law who captan’s 2 yachts stored there

If you decide to build a model of her, I might be able to get some pictures.

Rick, thank you very much. Anything you can get would be useful. What I usually find is that internal and the main deck features are usually covered reasonably well on web photographs. What is generally more difficult to find is photos of the rigging and fittings above eye level. I would prefer to model Cangarda with her auxiliary sailing rig set but I haven't found any photographs of this.  As I said any help would be most welcome.

Best regards

Keith

I really admire your work. Germania Nova is beautiful!

I see you are thinking of modeling a steam yacht, and it sounds like you haven't decided on what to build. Below is a link to a modeling project for the very interesting steam yacht SS Delphine owned by Horace Dodge (Dodge Motor Company). I thought you might be interested. It is very well documented.

Phil - Thank you for your comments. I don't know Delphine but on your prompting will do a bit of investigating. Thank you.

As I said last time I decided to have a bit of a rest from rigging. I think that completing as many of the deck fittings as possible before completing the shrouds is probably sensible.

I thought I would finish off the davits. These were substantially completed some time ago. The small ones are for the anchor and the boat steps while the large ones are for the tender.

DSC02159.thumb.JPG.af8c73194f072025be9e6f47e5241809.JPG

I needed to make and attach the blocks so I started by attaching the block attachment eyes to the davits.

DSC02160.thumb.JPG.c4b86f050d265d164ee3fb7a100592b2.JPG

I also entered another phase of shackle and block making.

DSC02161.thumb.JPG.a1e7388ec39b5c9f5a7cb4c2cdcfe075.JPG

I had previously made the block "strips".

DSC02163.thumb.JPG.f2b4753c070bdb8e1fe5c26ba0b81995.JPG

I needed both double and single blocks so I parted off a number of each.

DSC02165.thumb.JPG.7662549cc940a1b2d02e638d3c39b497.JPG

And then installed the shaft before rounding off the edges with fine sandpaper.

DSC02167.thumb.JPG.6c616a93f8964d6b9bf02e7e53c33684.JPG

The block attachment features (eyes and shackles) were then attached.

DSC02170.thumb.JPG.95c431271d0213bb5ebb5415a820b225.JPG

I then rigged the anchor davit using fine cotton.

DSC02172.thumb.JPG.4517391788e7bb7a7f5af73952c7b35a.JPG

The anchor (again made some time ago) was glued on to the rail brackets.

DSC02174.thumb.JPG.218a4bae1b289ed570ff27240fc0c8a8.JPG

And finally the anchor retaining straps were added.

Hi Keith -

Whatever yacht you eventually select, I recommend the resources and library at IYRS, the International Yacht Restoration School, at Newport, Rhode Island.

They are very accommodating, and have books, plans, photos, and other materials on almost any yacht you can select, especially sailing ones.

They are the people who restored Coronet to its pristine condition.

Best of success.  I'll be looking forward to your build log.

I stand corrected.  As of last week she is scheduled to move from IYRS to Mystic Seaport for final restoration and finishing.

This is estimated to take another three years.

I will be stopping in from time to time, as I did at IYRS over the years.

Keith,

Should you decide to build a model of Cangarda, SNAME and the Herreshoff Museum have published three collections of papers given at three Classic Yacht Symposium in the early 2000’s.  Each of these includes a technical paper about the restoration of Cangarda.  Much of the information is repetitive between the papers, but never less they are interesting.  Some drawings made by Tri Coastal Marine, the project’s Naval Architect are included but unfortunately no lines.  The hull was completely rebuilt; ABS the classification society would not agree to repair of the original riveted structure.  Hull lines, therefore, must exist.

I don’t have time to do it right now but I can provide you with scanned copies of the papers.

Thank you Roger. I have copies of the 2006 and 2008 papers but not the third paper you mention. I am aware from photographs that the original riveted hull was replaced with a welded hull so like you I assume the lines drawings exist I just haven’t found a reference to them. My best bet will be to try an email to the restorer.

I would contact Andy Davis at Tri Coastal Marine.  I had a very slight contact with him when hiring a Naval Architect for work on SS Meteor Museum ship here in the Duluth Harbor.  They were the Naval Architects and Marine Engineers for the Cangarda project. Still in business, I found them easily on the web.

The third paper describes the engineering plant though not in any detail.  The interesting thing is that they are running a triple expansion engine and all of its steam driven auxiliaries with an unmanned engine room. They have overlayed 120 year old machinery with a computerized control system.  The boiler is new.  What I don’t understand is lubrication of the engine.  He mentions using the old drip lubrication pots but old engines using these old lubrication systems required constant monitoring.

I think that's somewhat a shame, modern bureaucrats killing off old skills. Here in Aus the Sydney Heritage Fleet recently relaunched the steam ship John Oxley after 30 years on the hard. All hull plates have been replaced and RIVETED as per original, they did the same on the James Craig and S.T. Waratah has a riveted hull too. The governing bodies really should recognise and allow historically correct work on these vessels.

ABS rules require repairing a hole in a hull by first inserting a new plate extending at least 1ft from the old hole.  While this makes sense for large diameter penetrations, applying this rule to old rivet holes made a riveted hull impractical if not impossible.  ABS classification was necessary for insurance coverage.

This week I continued working on the deck mounted items. I had mounted the anchors but not attached the chains so this was the next job. The chains were attached to the anchors with a shackle and then they were lashed to the tripod frames bracing the jib martingales.

Next it was time to mount the tender on the deck. I needed webbing straps to hold the tender to the deck and these were made from ripstop tape.

Simple attachment brackets were made and these were attached to the straps. The webbing straps were stained black with a permanent marker.

I then needed to simulate tightening ratchets.

The straps / brackets had to be assembled once the tender was in place. I added the (cotton) painter to the tender before attaching the strap. The close up photos remind me that a good dusting is required.

A second strap holds down the stern of the tender.

Stern mooring lines were required.

Finally the boat davits were completed and mounted.
