New Bedford Whaleboat by RBohlman - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:16 scale

Recommended Posts

Back on February 1st of this year, I purchased the Model Shipways New Bedford Whaleboat kit from Model Expo.

I have been a modeler on and off through out my life in plastic and card stock models, and now that I am retired I wanted to give

a wooden model a try.  I have been working a little each day on the whaleboat and I believe I have made good progress.

I am at the stage now where the basic whaleboat is together and do have a few question, so I will start posting some of my

build photos and hope you all enjoy my beginners efforts!

Questions:  I have the rudder triced up on the port side aft but the line I used looks a little small to my eye?  Thoughts Please!

I have been working on the stand for the Whaleboat but not sure it is what I what?  Thoughts Please!

Thanks all and God Bless!

I always keep my stands simple in design so as not to take away from the ship itself. A lot of other artist prefer to put more into them since they are part of the art work. Including a diorama or having the whaleboat on davits attached to a bulwark similar to the plans.

The size of the base looks ok. You don't want a stand that is smaller then the hull since it looks like it is sailing off the stand. The pedestals are to large in my view. In the first photo you attached, Model Shipways is using heavy wire about the thickness of a hanger which I have seen quite often for boat models. You may want to down load other whale boats on-line and see what other artist are using. Model galleries would also be a good source.

From the photos it does look like you are doing a nice job on the whaleboat.

Concerning your other question about the line you used on the rudder, I doubt that there was a standard dimension. More than likely whatever was available. On Sheet 3 of the plans Erik  Ronnberg did include a tricing line that should give you a good idea of the scale.

Thanks, I did try to match the line size to the Sheet 3 drawing so I guess that it is the appx correct size.

Thanks everyone for the comments and help!

I have been working on a different stand for my Whaleboat model.

The cradle stands holds the boat a lot better then my 1st round wooden stands.  I stained the

cradle stands the same as on the base and also gave them a light coat of poly to match

better with the base.

Working on hull painting and will do some weathering later after paint is nice and dry.

After the painting is completed I will be building the oars and line tubs.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel to having this build completed!  🙂

Great work! Makes me think of the seamen who manned these boats...having a whale on the line and going on the "Nantucket sleigh ride".

You are doing a beautiful job on your whaleboat.

As a kid and even now, the thoughts of hunting huge whales out on a vast ocean in a little boat using a harpoon, these so much stoked the fires of imagination. What a fearless (it seems) life those sailors led. My imagination tells me a sailor's chances of survival back then were not very high. Either a whale, the ocean, cold, or disease were all likely to take his life.

Started work yesterday on the rowlocks.  Serving them over to muffle their sound when hunting the whale.

Stern line tub built and making a trip to Walmart today for some wood filler and other things.

Here is a photo of a rope tub that I am using as a model for mine.

Stays completed for main mast.  Time to start working on the sail.

Not a lot left to make, some irons, two knives, an axe, and the steering oar block.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!  :)

Ironed sail cloth and make a card stock template of full size whaleboat sail.

Ordered fabric glue and researching drawing on sail to show sail sections without sewing on sail.

Making up four (4) rope grommets for sail corners.

Purchased a $29.99 Varmax mini sewing machine from Amazon to sew my whaleboat sail.

It worked very well and I finished a lot of the lines on the sail this morning.

I will be gluing & sewing the sails edges later today, then adding the grommets and boltrope.
