I couldn’t resist starting on the gratings and coamings.  They were calling to me from inside the box!  I’ve actually been looking forward to making Chuck’s gratings since before I started the Winnie project.  So here is a picture of my first coaming and grating, ready for paint and WOP.

Thanks, JJ!  You're actually way ahead of me.  I've only just started the spirketting and have a ton of work left on all the inboard planking. I just couldn't help myself and had to make the coamings and gratings.  They're great fun.  Chuck took really good care of us in that the spacing on the coamings is designed to fit the gratings perfectly.  That was the first thing I was concerned about when I started.  I thought I just got lucky on the first one and then I checked the spacing on the rest and they're all designed to fit like a glove.  This was my first time making gratings at all and I found that I had to be really patient while taking them off of the build jig.  If you pry them off too far on one pass, it will start to twist and come apart.  So instead, I just pried until I saw it move and then went to the next slat.  Just for reference, mine are Alaskan yellow cedar.

Thanks, Vladimir!  I used the grating kits from Syren.  They’re not too difficult, but they take a good bit of sanding.  The really amazing part is how well they fit in the coamings.

This is looking fantastic, Matt. Like you I couldn't resist doing the coamings and gratings out of turn. They are superb little kits which look great on their own and even better in situ with planking around.

Hi Frank.  I'm getting close to making an update.  Spirketting has been a slow process for me with not much good to show in the middle of the process.

It has been a while since I posted an update.  There’s not much to see, but I’ve missed posting.  I’ve completed the spirketting and am starting to work on margin planks.  These are a ways from complete and are still pretty uneven.  The cannon is also far from complete.  I built it just enough to confirm that my gun ports are OK.  I totally cheated on the quoin by using a store bought belaying pin.  I will try to make them from scratch when I get to chapter six.

I’m happy with the three gratings in this shot, but the other three are a train wreck right now.  I bought another grating kit to replace them.

You can see that I cracked the port side beam clamp at the forward notch.  I think this will be hidden in the end.  The port margin plank in this shot is pretty close.  I not cutting the scarf joint until the next piece is ready.

That is looking pretty darn good.  Yes the deck clamp will be all but impossible  to see.

That really looks very good Matt. I had to scan the two port side pictures over and over to notice what you meant with that cracked the port side beam clamp. Did only notice it but the fourth time, and only because you wrote that down.

He will be cutting that split area away anyway as that beam need to be moved forward.  My original slot was not in the correct position.   So most of the work is done for him already.   None of the deck clamps will be visible.  They are all covered by the lodging knees etc.

I’m working on the margin planks.  I started on the starboard side, but they were not going together very well.  So I cut out the pieces for the port side and started working on it.  I must have just needed more practice, because these are going much better.  Here’s the forward most, which is done, and the next one moving aft, still in progress.

I took my time finishing the deck planking.  I chose to leave the coamings and partners loose until I was done with the planking to make sanding easier.  I was also pretty sure I’d damage them trying to sand around them.  Here are some pictures with just a few pieces left and then the final product.

Congrats to this milestone Matt. You took your time and patience with those angled narrowing  strakes. Pretty awesome. V.

Thanks, Vladimir.  I can see that I forgot to set my custom white balance before taking these pictures.  My soft white lighting is looking pretty yellow.  I'll post some better ones over the weekend.

Thanks, WalrusGuy and JJ.  Here are a few pics with the correct white balance.  It had been so long since I took pictures of Winnie that I forgot what I was doing!

I’ve made some progress on chapter 5, starting with the rudder.  It’s a beautiful set, but I broke several parts in the pintle and grudgeon sheet.  Fortunately, they were easy to glue back together while I was gluing them on.  My mistake was that I painted them before removing them from the sheet.  This made them hard to cut free and i made a mess of it.  But you can’t tell now because they went back together seamlessly.  
 

the ladders went together so nicely.  I really enjoyed the process.  The double ladder rungs fit perfectly.  It was really nice to work on.
 

I used annealed steal wire to pin the staghorn and cleats.  This made it easy to paint them.  I used the magnet of my torpedo level to hold them while the paint dried.  Pinning them also let me test fit them to make sure I was happy with it before gluing.

Thanks, Justin.  There are a few areas that I'm completely thrilled with.  Recently, that includes the gratings, cleats, mast partners, and ladders.  Chuck's design work is amazing and it really makes this project a lot of fun.  There are so many things coming up that I'm excited about.
