I too did the Estes rocket thing back in the day.  One was the Mercury but the beast was Saturn V.   Lost the Saturn V when one of the motors (it had 5 as I recall) blew up on launch.  Irritated me but it wasn't uncommon as some their motors did blow like a fire cracker.

I tried to build the Estes Saturn V kit, but it was too much for me. The best I did was the Orbital Transport. First launch went amazingly well. Booster came back down by parachute and the orbiter flew circles around it on the way down.

Worst was a windy day and the launch of the "Interceptor" fictional Air Force craft with wingtip rocket pods. Flew straight up and a gust caught it about 1/3 way up and it made a right-angle turn. Had to go chase it down, but it was a fun flight.

Ah.. fun days then, Claire.   We usually spent more time chasing the rockets and looking for them than launching them.   We had to stop though as were flying from the University which was in the landing pattern for Wright-Patterson AFB.   We got a visit one Sunday from the AP's one Sunday who suggested we find a "different place".

In the 70's, a neighbor and I built a pair of Estes rockets, I built the star ship Enterprise and he built the Klingon ship. When we finished them, we both did our first launch together and his engine exploded just after it lifted off the ground, blowing it into confetti size pieces. Yeah, a real disappointment after all that work.

The Saturn V was a very impressive rocket for sure. I never built one but always wanted to build one.

I launched my rockets from the pasture at our home and even that was not nearly large enough to ensure the rocket would come back down where it could be found.

Lost a lot of my Estes rockets as wind would carry them WAY far away

I think that happened to ALL of my Estes rockets that survived more than one launch! If they flew right and went high and the chute deployed then they drifted out of the area where I was allowed to go. I think that was why i finally had to give it up. Too much cost, all building, (Fun) and very little flying, (Fun when it went right) and only a small flying area that was close enough to home.

😅 Oh yeah, Lindberg is proof that Revell has no monopoly on flash. I remember having one heck of a hard time cleaning up flash when I was a kid. Now, I have tools that make the job easier to do, but it's still a royal pain in the butt to have to do it. Back then, all I had were kitchen knives to work with.

What other Atlantis kits did you see?

What was the size/scale of the Dumas PT 109? I wonder if they still have cast metal hardware or if now they have plastic hardware?

the PT boat is 1:30 scale....equates to about 33 inches long.   cripes.......the Nordkap and the Progress are 32 inches long,  and they are 1:50 scale.  it's right up my alley :)   I've been wanting to build one of their kits anyway,  so I had better hurry if I want it.   I did pick up the Revell PT 109 kit.....small kit at 1:72 scale.  I also picked up a 1:48 scale Spad VIII by Glencoe.........never built a model by this company before,  so it should be interesting.  I really didn't notice what the model was.......I just saw the name and it clicked,  since I had never heard of them,  until you started this project.   I saw a couple other names I hadn't heard of before.......if an when I go back,  I'll gather some intel

CDW, your model is looking great. And, it's bringing back memories!

Thanks Clare. It's a stroll down memory lane for sure. Those strolls are fun for a guy my age, and sometimes memories of happier, more innocent times when everything seemed like a grand adventure. Just think, today, many people wouldn't give an astronaut orbiting around the Earth a second thought. probably wouldn't even make the "news".

sounds about right.........I just heard about their recent mission to the space station.   probably wouldn't have heard anything at all,  if it wasn't manned by women ;)   we should expect a model of the space station sooner or later.

You are a braver man than I am Denis. I was THINKING the same thing about the all female spacewalk last week but thought I should keep my mouth shut. I do suppose it is a first though so that makes it legitimate news. But even that was not aired extensively like the early launches and space missions.

I think they already had kits of the Mir space station as well as the International Space Station. I think I have the old flying bicycle wheel station from the 50s in my stash somewhere.

Yep, there is/was an International Space Station (ISS) styrene model. Short run kit, ill fitting parts. I have one but put it on hold when I moved and haven't unearthed from the bottom of the stash. There was an aftermarket PE set, too. It's the original configuration, so many newer modules aren't attached.

Another version is a paper model: https://axm61.wordpress.com/axm-iss-model/

This one appears to be pretty current with numerous add ons. Need to search on several pages for all the mods that have been made to the ISS.

funny Lou........I had a kitchen light that was shaped like that :D  :D   the all woman space walk is big news........no need to be brave commending these fine astronauts ;)

the model looks super........the added color really works for the structure.   the thing that looks off though are the rear duals for the tractor and on the silver tanker trailer.  the tires seem to stick out too far.  wouldn't mention it,  but I've been around the darn things too long.   it is an impressive model though :)

That's because the tractor is intended to move the rocket transporter and not the trailer I had posed it with. Seems to perfectly fit the width of the rocket transport.

Nice Build have not seen that in my local HobbyLobby. So,Greg you have much success selling this kind of stuff on EBay already assembled? ;) Kevin

Buyers are out there and I have had moderate success selling built items I don't want to hang on to. There will be some things from time to time that buyers just are not interested in buying, but for the most part, everything I advertised sold for a buy-it-now price. Bear in mind, I make my kit/paint investment back with some cushion but in no way does it compensate for the hours spent in building the items.

As an example, I sold this model for $275. I had about $120 invested with the kit and paints.

This will be my final installment and pics for the Atlas-Mercury Friendship 7 Everything is Go project.

I am certain there are many details and wonderful extras that could be added to make this an even more remarkable model, but I am going to call this one finished. It's brought back a flood of good old memories and I have had lots of fun building and painting it but I'm ready to move along to something else now.

I have a huge 1:35 scale WW2 German Locomotive I need to finish so hope to finish that one next. Stay tuned for more fun.

Boy that brings back memories for sure.

Thanks guys.

Every now and then, I have found projects that are nostalgic and basic provide me with a refreshing escape from long, drawn out projects that requires weeks/months to finish. This has been one of those quickies.

it's one of the reasons why I love the older kits....especially if I've built it before.  seeing what it looks like as opposed to what I did then........you really see how you have evolved ;)
