Also nuclear warheads.

Well it all depends on the degree of the closeness,

Horseshoes, it's measured in inches...

Hand Grenades it's measures in yards, (or metres if your military)

With Nuclear Warheads it's measured in miles.....

On a Seascape, it's measured in oceans, or in this case part of an ocean.... (and unlike the other three you have to count the season as well)

So when I say close, I'm looking at the macro sense of close, you know expansive..... But I will admit to narrowing the scope down to the North Western Pacific in early spring.....

And that was intended to be a joke....

 So I've acquired my materials.....

DCP_2878.JPG.9d86eb964321b9066d72d3cc5cb4faa5.JPG

On the left is the TP a few squares, next to that is the Acrylic Gloss Heavy Gel medium, and then the Acrylic Modeling Paste and finally in the unlabeled bottle, a 50/50 mix of Elmer's and water...

Then of course my foam base...

I need to find the color of the ocean on that day or more like it in similar conditions.... Now don't really need to do much research to know that the ocean is blue.... and white caps are well, white... But what shade of blue? how intense given the bright sunshine the reflectivity of the water should I use high gloss or semi-gloss....

So I gathered some pictures of the North Pacific Ocean in bright sunlight for the most part showing the conditions in a lot more detail than the B&W subject pic and a range of sea conditions from mild to, well, let's say conditions that would definitely rock any boat your on..... (and there is one sunset pic that crept into the mix)

Mild....

1064329178_Force2.jpg.b53de1c2cd07cdb6ab0c6cefdfc4aa61.jpg

Early morning with a good stiff breeze....

1670061432_Force7-8(3).jpg.3b702b6872027066681b34e94d379798.jpg

And last, lets go rockin'..

990942710_Force9-10(3).jpg.a7c73d082151a2e47e0f49f44f9c1477.jpg

Now, the first set of two images probably show that the water was like the days just after they left San Francisco...

The second set of three show what it probably was like when they started their dash to the launch point.....

And the last three probably show conditions at launch.....

The middle three are the closest to what I need to model although they do show as a bit stronger sea conditions than the subject pic....

And the color is blue, no big surprise there, but it's a deep deep blue even under bright sunlight... Pthalo Blue looks good for the water and Titanium White for the little whitecaps and any foam around the ship's hull.....

Will be starting texturing the ocean in a bit....

Thank you very much my friends, Mike I like showing the process, how I get from image to finished model... The research is part of that....

Ed, what I'm doing is kinda an amalgam of the various techniques out there, my first was an ugly board painted blue with some melted styrene foam to represent waves..... I've learned a lot more since then.... My problem was starting always worried if will come out right for what I'm modeling. For the most part I'm beyond that stage now, but I wouldn't be here if I didn't try.....

I hope you all like it when it's done and it doesn't look like a rock thrown in a pool.... {chuckle}

Another small update.... Prepping the surface for detailing.....

This is where the Modeling Paste comes in, eliminating any defects in the foam forming heat process...

DCP_2879.JPG.18d7aee31d9a90a03938dcf0ceb7f2cd.JPG

Using an artists knife to spread the paste over the deep ripply bubbles formed by the heat gun.... First application was a bit thick around 1/8th inch.... This paste dries hard, very hard and shrinks a bit so the expected cracks appeared, a second thin skin coat took care of those.....

DCP_2880.JPG.9e6cab4a7f049c0f8f756e247380dd5b.JPG

Overall it the 1/8th thick coat took about 6 hrs to dry completely, the skim coat took about 2 hrs.... I left it overnight to make sure it fully dried....

Next comes the TP and glue application... TP & white glue has been used for eons as a modeling material, from this type of application to making tarps for armor, it is very versatile..

You first start by gluing down a layer of TP....

DCP_2881.JPG.d03cf98dfae22bae4c115335fa0c94c7.JPG

1st sheet....

DCP_2882.JPG.e2e2f4dc3cc64741bfea37d7188446a5.JPG

2nd sheet and so on and so forth till the surface is completely covered...

DCP_2883.JPG.521af2c50859b26fb41459c60ab4b359.JPGDCP_2884.JPG.729bf2f1bb1efc54bf83d81843c55ecf.JPG

Then you come back over it with a second layer and as you can see it is really unavoidable to create a texture...

DCP_2885.JPG.0403e1f2af2fd909ed2f8623198e8c02.JPG

This will now sit overnight to dry as well before I add the wavelet texture layer which will be two more layers of TP... I will not be looking for coverage on the next two layers, but trying to create the small waves being blown up across the swell....

Onward.....

Thanks for showing your steps on creating this diorama.  I've seen the TP approach in some other builds on Youtube, and it looks like a great technique.

My pleasure Brother, I'll keep doing it as long as people put up with it....

It's an old standby for putting wrinkly textures on smooth surfaces, been around for generations....

Finished the TP application, time to break out some paint.....

First application will be the Pthalo Blue, probably going to be a bit bright in first application......

Probably should have used royal blue.... it's a hair too blue.....

Either a black wash, or a streaking of blue/black to darken it some....

Ok took another pic without the camera flash....

And the comparison...

Before I go to darkening, I'm going to give it a second coat..... I probably should have put a dark base under the blue....

Opinions?

Perhaps a tad darker but without the flash it looks fine, the white caps will change the look too.

Could you use a translucent darker blue as a second coat?

Your seeing the same thing I am my friend... where the paint is pulled out, it is brighter cause of the white tp underneath.... And it stands out... I should have dark based it......

Where it overlaps it's dark enough so I think I'll put a second coat on it and see where I'm at.... Should have less white gleaming through....

I think I'm on the right track....

Looking good mate! I think it adds a lot to a ship when it’s shown on water, abit more life.

Thanks my friend...

There are places for both, pedestal looks good for larger models, smaller look better (imho) on the sea in their natural environment.....

On this one I've decided to model a specific day in the life.... so it has to look a certain way..... (gets to be a headache at times, and it takes longer, but in the end it is worth it)

Ok, another small update...

The paint is dry...

DCP_2891.JPG.bbc37b1ab4dac25149ef9242d9ed7ad6.JPG

Now this is high angle with flash and of course the ships hull is in position.... This is the angle it will probably be viewed at most of all...

I have another angle.....

DCP_2890.JPG.b160d385d8058279ba283092b5a98cea.JPG

Aside from the wake, that matches the pic.... The wake will get added when it's time to mount the hull into the water, but I think I'm spot on here... It looks like the seas in the pic....

That's what I was looking for....

Onward...

Even with the flash the water looks super, as you say, the details will finish it off.

Very  nice work, I think you've cracked it EG😉

Thanks my friend.... Took a little bit of figuring, but scale was the controlling factor, too much variation and it would look strange..... I suppose I could throw another coat of Pthalo Blue on it but then it would look too dark..... Next up is more research and prepwork.... I have to do something about the camo pattern on the superstructures and sort the wake out of how they looked...

Unless they were in heavy seas the Gleaves class units didn't throw a lot of wake but it is the defining factor here cause the wake draws the eyes to the ship....

A first look is this shot....

CWDD421.jpg.2183a2969a7590686d34ac16e9723aad.jpg

Of course I stole this pic from Floating Drydock.com, (anyone have an issue with it I'll take it down) but it goes to illustrate what the wake would be and in this pic the ship was cutting through the wake of the oil tanker she is coming along side of.... a lot of wake for 15 kts with these ships.... But it shows that even with some waves, they didn't throw a lot of wake.... and it's in color....

Be a couple of days while I work out the camo.... then start building the superstructure...

About half way through working out the Camo pattern for the superstructure....

There are not a lot of references for it out there and it was unique to the ship... (no two Ms.12 patterns were identical, ships to ship nor port to starboard on the same ship)

Everything that is details not shown on the diagram gets 5-O ocean grey....

Similar but not identical... (still working on the port stern, it's a little disjointed at the moment...

Onward...

Camo patterns done.... Had to take a little artistic license on the port side as there are no images of it available.... but for the most part it is close to what she wore....

So that means that it is not artistic license, but absolutely authentic as no one can argue with you on your choice.:D

Unless there's a port side shot, who's to say. Coming along nicely.

Specifically they weren't identical, that is the main issue with replicating Ms.12 mod, and they weren't really paying attention to recording the camo schemes... The port side was similar to what was on the starboard side, this works for the hull but the superstructures were another thing with wide variations... I guess it depends on what the painting crew responsible for that portion of the ship decided, without pics there is no way to know.....

So composite is the only way to go.... The wake is going to tell the tale my friend, I'm still calculating on how I'm going to do it....

There are none unfortunately, with the Gwin I got lucky, there are shots of most of her port side, it's the stern that is missing.. I didn't know this when I started so I lucked out in that respect.... I also found a port side shot of the USS Kearny, which was painted at the same time as the Gwin and their patterns are so similar that they were probably painted by the same crew..... I lucked out there as well...

Thank you my friends, I'm trying to do her as accurate as I can....
