Nils, hope this helps.  The anchor rope would be secured around the riding bitts as in picture below (just behind the forward platform, although they are not technically riding bitts on the Snake the principle is the same).  The cable then passes through soem holes in one the grating over one of the hatches.  The rope would then feed down onto a lower deck called the 'cable tier' where the rope would have been coiled.  It was probably a very smelly place given the wet mud that would be covering the rope.

Hi Nils, I've just recalled that Daniel (Dafi) did some extensive work on working the anchor cables, here's a link to his posts which show the arrangement of the cables around the riding bitts, and running down thro' the hatches.

Writing in his book Arming and fitting Brian Lavery comments that sixth rates had no separate orlop deck amidships so they carried their cables on top of the barrels in the hold, which must have been inconvenient at times. Smaller vessels stowed them where they could, sometimes directly on the bottom of the hold.

 

Neither of these options seem very good for either the condition of the barrels or the drying out of the cables.

 

When underway I understand that the anchor cables were unrove and the hawse holes blocked up, and when stored the cables were loosely coiled.

 

The stored cables took up a lot of room within a ship; Lavery writes that they took up around 2/5th of the length of a ship, and  in the ffm Vol 1V  a standard cable length of 720' is given. At 1.64 scale this would equate to a massive 342cm of coiled cable running each side of the centre line of the ship.

 

Remember that the anchor cables were not directly attached to the  capstans when hauling them in and out, they were attached to smaller messenger cables.

 

A good reference source is The Arming and Fitting of English Ships of War 1600 - 1815 by Brian Lavery.

That stove is coming along nicely. You have a talent to make the essence of things visible with simple means. Your stove started the same way as my own clumsy attempt. Then you add just a few things – a band with rivets here, a few lids there – and suddenly your stove looks real. Great!

Some details I saw in other build logs and just put together what I found could be useful. The Lifting ringbolts at the four corners I left away (too much fiddle parts)

I would imagine that if you were to look at other ships of her class,  it may give you a better idea.   the ropes going down into the grate may be correct.   I wish I knew more of these types of vessels.    your really doing her justice though....very nice

again I learn something new,..... I saw that funny looking horizontal turret on stove Pictures before, and not knowing what it was for, I did`nt do it, guess they did`nt have cans of cooled Coke for the Crew on board, and the rum would`nt last for ever.

 

In this case there would Need to be another collector-barrel for condensated water at best near the stove..

Sweet little stove Nils. If you don't wish to go to the trouble of making the distillation pipe, you could just insert the connecter, a short length of brass tube inserted on top of the stove towards the edge centrally between the boiler lids.

I see there is a separate discussion on this.  I can't help feeling that this probably wouldn't have been a very effective method for providing drinking water considering the necessary large fuel supply needed to generate the volume of water needed for a crew.  Conjecture on my part was that this was used for limited 'specialized purpose's (captain/officers food delicacies, sickbay needs etc) rather than a source for crew as a whole.  I'm sure others could comment more authoritatively.

was just thinking of a simple distill-device for nowadays survivors in a lifeboat or elsewhere in lack of freshwater, with ocean all around to the horizon....

I like the distiller. To answer the question, distilled water would be salt free and mineral free, for that matter.

It would be a not very efficient way to make water, but in emergency its would do. Basically due to what Jason mentioned of the fuel required to boil the water, but if the stove is going anyway the excess heat might as well be used to get as much out of the fuel as possible and distilling water or spirits would be a good use for this.

 

Kind of like cooking a big pan of soup in the winter to help warm up the house, which is efficient unlike cooking it in the summer and having to use A/C to remove the heat from the house. Sailors were masters of efficiency as it tended to help extend the length of life in an environment that could be hazardous and unpredictable.

 

Anyway, nice stove Nils, I like the rivets. Its added a nice touch.

One of the issues, as Popeye mentioned, is micro organisms.
In this day of chlorinated water, it can be kept for long periods without fear. When distilled it removes the chlorine and then allows air borne microbes to seed the water and make it grow microbes. Distilled water has a shorter shelf-life then modern water...but back then I'm sure it was much preferred to what would be called potable water (anything considered drinkable). Important issues like this are interesting to think about, as being at sea in those days could be as bad a situation as Apollo 13's being stuck out in space.
 
If I remember correctly back when I read Bligh's account of the mutiny after voyage, water was a key. The first part of the trip it rained and ruined part of the food but allowed the collection of water, but later they needed but could not go to shore to search for water due to the fear of natives. One of their first stops ended in dead members. 

I'd say for the sailor of a few centuries back, water was the first concern, and distillation was a way of making sea water potable.
Distillation can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks so it was a long known process and easily achievable.
 
I'm just guessing here, but what Michael says makes sense. Grog and rum with even the small alcohol content of grog, was the chlorination of the day. Alcohol killed microbes and helped keep the water safe and healthy... and this wasn't just at sea.
 
Anyway, enough physic lecture.

In 1500, German alchemist Hieronymus Braunschweig published Liber de arte destillandi (The Book of the Art of Distillation) the first book solely dedicated to the subject of distillation. So even though the process dates back at least to Alexander the Great, German put it on paper first .

Today I started a Little bit on the anchor System, fitted two rollers under the forecastle deck, to return the Messenger cable without much friction (will Show later on when the cables get rigged)

 

 

 

I am planing for the anchor cables to go right down through the gundeck main hatch, and to the cargo floor, to be coiled and tied on top of the cargo Barrels. There is not much hight left but I think it will do for several rounds of coiled (tied) cable
