Hello dear forum members, I'm new to scratch building and would like to build my first ship in POF style.  Regarding my project: I am building the La Palme 1744 on a scale of 1:36, it is the first Corvette of a 3-series, its sister ships are the L' Anémone (1747) and the L' Amarante (Dec. 1747) whose plans were drawn up by Joseph-  Louis Ollivier, who was only 15 when he began construction.  I use the monograph "L' AMARANTE" by Gérard Delacroix as a template.  Well I hope that I get your support with tips and tricks, as well as constructive criticism.

My first 6 frames were unfortunately for the wood stove, I had milled them wrong.  To date, I have completed half of the frames.

Beautiful workmanship!!   I never realized the joints of the keel on French and English ships were completely different with the French being horizontal and the English being vertical.   I wonder why or if one was stronger than the other.

Oh Tobias, I hate you so much 🤪

I love the lines of La Palme's big sister - the Frégate de VIII Renommee. I'd love to build her one day, but for now I don't have enough space and some other projects blocking my workbench, that need to be finished.. And now you introduce me to a mini-Renommee! I immediately fell in love and will follow your build log with great interest and - in parallel - look for plans.

The French might have had bad luck with their navy in the 18th century, but their ships looked damn fine!

Hello Strelok, thank you for your interest, yes I thought long and hard about which ship to start with. My selection of monographs is not large, but not small either. La Renommee was my second mono I bought and was shortlisted.

According to Brian Lavery, the english used their way because it was stronger, the french used their way because the english way leaked more.

We've been back from vacation since Sunday night and I went back to work at Wert on Tuesday evening.
I managed to finish the last 6 frames, a small milestone in a mega project.  in the next few evenings, the bow and the nail picture of the frames are due, as well as the filler pieces and many small things.  I'll keep you posted until then.

Thank you for looking.

The first frame is drilled and fitted with brass square bolts, the top 3 or 6 bolts are tree nails according to the monograph.  I then burnished the bolts and treated one side with tung oil.

Hello Marslav, the blackening of brass or copper is achieved with a special agent (blueing agent) I use Baristol but there are better see attached picture.  I use the tung oil so that the black cannot soak into the wood.

Outstanding work Sir! Your shop is beautiful. I’m guessing you were a woodworker long before a model ship builder. 😀

Hello David, I am a trained car mechanic with a technical degree, so nothing with wood, but I love working with wood.  My entry into the hobby was also only last year in January with the Essex whaler kit and from June last year Le Coureur by CAF.  The Admiralsbau has been on my mind ever since, so I decided to start with La Palme.

Day 2:

Measure the hole pattern of the frame exactly, mark, drill holes, insert bolts, file off bolts (first use a file, smooth with 240 grit sandpaper and then polish with abrasive wool), blacken bolts and then come the upper tree nails at the end.

Exactly in that order.  Working time per frame about 1 hour.  I've definitely been busy for a very long time.

If we now imagine the following:

You won't see half of it because it disappears under the planks and the other half will probably be cut away if I open the side, i.e. 3 frames then a whole one again, etc. But I know that they are there. Well we'll see.
Thank you all again for all the likes and comments.

Day 3:

4 more frames are added, I decided to use the square bolts in the upper area as well and not tree nails.  The tree nails are just a relief to make it easier to saw out the gunports later.  In the area of these openings I will drill the holes, but I will not use anything to retrofit them if necessary after opening them.
