Welcome to MSW John.  It may be too late but you might consider setting it aside for now and starting with one or more of the high quality three vessel starter series from Model Shipways designed by David Antscherl.  These are very accurately designed and will teach you great techniques and habits rather than the opposite.

It is a blessing and a curse, but you now have over 42,000 potential teachers and advisors here at MSW.

PLEASE take 30 SECONDS and sign up for the epic Nelson/Trafalgar project if you would like to see it made into a TV series.   Click on http://trafalgar.tv   There is no cost other than the 30 seconds of your time.  THANK YOU

You shouldn't have too much trouble with that kit. Just take your time and ask questions. We do have a gallery of her here.

I see you only live 10-15 miles from me too, so good to see another local!

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

Not sure wat Allan means about putting aside and doing another type of boat? And getting in to bad habits?

Is this one to big a job for a complete beginner of is it a good one to start with? as you say Allan it's a bit to late now it has to be built . I'm in no rush to get it done.

Thanks again for the welcome.

John

Welcome to MSW, John.  Allan is offering some advice and it's good.   However, start the kit and a  log and if you run into issues you can't solve, back off and try one of the kits he recommended and then go back to your tug.

Welcome aboard John.  Allan is suggesting that the ship you have chosen might be an overly ambitious decision for a first build.  In "discovering" ways to overcome the difficulties you will inevitably come across as a first time builder, you will have a strong probability of not taking the best course of action to move on.  What I mean is that there probably is an easier way to do it, a more authentic appearance that can be achieved and/or a method that would/could provide a more accurate result, thus getting into bad habits.  This is nothing against you at all personally, plus I'm sure many of us would love for you prove the "unsolicited caution" unwarranted.  But there are so many "1st timers" who've thrown up their arms and walked away from the hobby because they dove head first into the deep end before they learned to swim.  Regardless of what you decide, rest assured that there are many folks here that are ready, willing and able to provide answers to any and all questions you have on any build you select.  Once you figure out which one, take you time, be patient and enjoy the voyage.

Take care and be safe.

Hi All.

Thanks for the great advice im sure i will be calling on a few of you for help on my maiden voyage.

John

I'm sure you'll be just fine with that kit. We don't even know if you've been a modeller in some other form before. My first kit was an AL San Francisco....a lit which doubtless I'd be told is too hard for a first build, but here I am 20yrs on. AND....I'm still full of bad habits. Just enjoy your build.

Welcome aboard John!  Can't wait to see how your build progresses, especially now that there are so many differing opinions.  Just have fun, and don't fret the small stuff...  Hmmm, maybe you have to fret the small stuff in this hobby.  So, just have fun no matter what, and solicit opinions when needed.  There are a lot of expert opinions here.

Cheers!

Brian
