Another fun filled adventure…

With a low parts count and simple construction, this will mostly be an exercise in painting and detailing. A short term project, but in 1:72 scale, one that’s large enough to make a nice display piece when it’s all done.

Turret assembly goes together quickly. Will build entire turret and leave off the smallest pieces such as the rail stanchions as they may get knocked off during the turret painting/detailing/weathering phases.

Nice! A challenge for the kit manufacturer would be to reproduce the structure that was beneath that monstrous turret.

Considering the secrecy that was in place during Yamato's construction, tho', that information may not be available now.

Indeed! That would be an awesome model.

I use Mr Surfacer 500 as a filler around the range finder to turret join. Applied with a tooth pick, I smooth it out with a paint brush wetted with lacquer thinner before it sets up.

The lacquer thinner doesn't affect the styrene or do you remove it quickly?

Yes remove it quickly as it can soften the plastic

With the basic turret assembled and gun barrel halves joined, will give the entire model a black primer surfacer before doing some preshading. Will install the more delicate pieces after priming and preshading. Will also fill and sand the barrel join lines before priming.

 

The kit provides two sets of blast bags, giving the modeler the option of displaying the barrels in a raised or lowered position.

Thanks for that excellent reference, Yves. The addition of the Japanese sailors immediately caught my eye. Will begin searching for some of those figures for my model.

Make sure you're not standing on the main deck when those big guns go off. I've heard it could be hazardous. 🙂

it would be a sure bet that no one would be near them    .....at least,  no without ear protection    there are battle ships that have a machine gun battery on top of the turret.  it is a fact that the guns can be individually elevated....most modelers keep them even.  it's a nice touch.

I have thought about getting one of these myself was waiting to see a build.

I was hoping they did this one since I am about to embark on a new project.I thinks it would be neat to build that portion of deck from beam-to-beam(?) with all the goodies on deck?

Thw kit comes with a deck section as a sort of display base.

White pre shading should help an otherwise dull IJN gray paint color. Will detail the small raised details with a paint brush in white before applying the gray.

At this stage, we add the small photo etch details and ladders next.

With the photo etch and other small details installed, the model is ready for IJN gray paint. 
The stanchions and railings will be installed after a couple of paint and paint filter stages to help prevent breakage from handling.

We will start with IJN gray then do some post shading next.

Had to see what it looked like with the guns mounted.

I added white to the gray used for the main color for the post shading. The blend knocks the gray down a notch or two. Then I followed the same shading pattern in the pre shading to highlight the model a bit.

Next, will shoot the whole model with Mr Color leveling thinner 400 to help blend these two colors together.
