Valeriy, I had noticed that and assumed it was used for low speed manoeuvring. given the exposed position it would seem untenable  to use it during action or in a seaway.

I think the original idea was to reduce the turning circle following an attack. Torpedoboats and destroyers would approach their target at high speed, fire their torpedos and then turn away quickly to get out of the range of the artillery of their targets. The long narrow hulls would make torpedoboat very slow turners.

It seems to me that your assumption is true for the first destroyers who had torpedo tubes built into the hull and fixed.

The destroyers of the Cyclone type already had full-fledged rotary torpedo tubes and they could fire from any heading angles without fear of losing time to turn around.

 

Therefore, Keith's assumption is probably closer to reality. These destroyers were created for coastal action where there are many narrow bays, skerries and fjords. In these difficult conditions, it was necessary to maneuver constantly.

Very nice, How did you make the propellors and "A" frames? Are the blades brazed on to the hubs and how did you achieve the twist? Ditto the bearing bosses on the "A" frames. Hope you are keeping safe.

       Now I'm working on the hull of the destroyer. It's dusty and dirty work, and I try to do it outside. However, bad street weather now does not help speed up the process.

    And I'll have to wait a bit and work on different blueprints...

Thanks Keith, I'm fine!   

All parts are made separately and soldered together with silver solder. After soldering with silver, the brazed seam is very strong. This allows me to bend the propeller blade to the desired angle using ordinary pliers. In this case, between the propeller blade and the metal of the tool, I insert a small wooden spacer. It protects the item from deep scratches.

Phil, this is very easy to do.
  First you need to fix the propeller shaft using a template, and then solder the necessary parts on the fixed propeller shaft.
  I show this method in the photographs of Varyag.

Now I'm just busy making it, especially for the destroyer, I need a larger size.

Excellent work as usual Valerie. The stern is quite an unusual shape - neither round or flat. The props seem large in comparison to the hull but I guess she had a lot of power for her size.

Is the plating simulated using card or something more elaborate?

I tried looking the cyclone class up but couldn't find much detail. Were they early samples of turbine powered craft or did they have reciprocating machinery? Do you know what the horse power was? Were they coal or oil fired?
