Eberhard / Phil - thank you. I figured they were inlets but nevertheless I thought they might be prone to blocking with debris such as plastic bags. If it were me I think I would do without the grille and compensate by including a strainer inboard of the sea cock. Much easier to clear blockages when dry and warm.

Thank you Gary.

that is indeed how it's done nowadays. But as Eberhard mentioned, Jelly-fish can be a pain too. I remember clearing 600kg of them from the seachests in Kuwait at some point. A single one is not an issue, they'll be cut to pieces when hitting a sharp object or grating, but a full invasion of them is a totally different thing.

The disadvantage of strainers inside is that you open a pipe to the sea below the waterline. You better be sure...

Yes Roel - that's why I would have the strainer inboard oh the seacock. I have pulled many a log from below the waterline to clear the impeller of weed. They all come with a bung tied to the housing so it is handy to plug the flow.

I have not so nice mermories of having to clean out the blocked sewage system on a sailboat.

Eberhard - Yes we have all probably had that pleasure. I always marvelled at how many poorly designed WC systems were installed on otherwise well designed boats e.g. :-

The toilet pump changeover switch was always positioned where misdirected urine was bound to land.

The pump was invariably plastic and held on by 4 small screws on a fairly narrow mounting base. It flexed alarmingly and felt like it was going to come off in your hand.

The pump seal always leaked and invariably squirted brown water over the handle.

The seat was invariably loose and the fastenings were invariable corroded and inaccessible.

Time in the workshop continues to be hard come by. However I have made a little progress.

I increased my stress levels by boring various holes in the hull.

DSC03055.thumb.JPG.ee2ef323ebf159cc6d5ffd39e1cd27b0.JPG

One of the holes has a concave dished shape around it so I made a dome shaped sander.

DSC03046.thumb.JPG.4e3d8bf0e767a1ba077bc623738cf3ab.JPG

DSC03047.thumb.JPG.92f37c37b599c82432ab5c2ac76b8dd7.JPG

I shouldn't have bothered as the dish was almost imperceptible at model scale.

I also made the half cover from brass. I turned a very thin brass washer with sharp edges and then used a ball bearing to press the dish.

DSC03068.thumb.JPG.1eb38052acb8a16203af34f1e75d4b16.JPG

I also made the "depth sounder" feature and the fairing which protects it.

DSC03057.thumb.JPG.3e98bb7642db23c264a5c50a1bbe5dfc.JPG

I made the grilles for the various hull penetrations from sheet brass - cut on the mill with a slitting saw.

DSC03060.thumb.JPG.1da6201f8c385cbe7c51b9941ae8e6ec.JPG

DSC03061.thumb.JPG.7ae38b1807f60b8013de0399e085fc11.JPG

The fingers were soldered to rings cut from brass tube. The edges were then filed flush.

DSC03063.thumb.JPG.4c80b526791e49b8e0ee7711097939a9.JPG

DSC03065.thumb.JPG.403a03cca2c3da00dcdf3d109518988b.JPG

I then started pondering the gingerbread again. I sized template on the printer and laid it in place.

DSC03011.thumb.JPG.621e914973657f35d38120c71f0e6f0f.JPG

My pondering led to plan 1 - i.e. cutting the gingerbread from brass sheet and then building up the thickness with something to give it bulk / texture. Plans 2, 3 or 4 may still be necessary.

I started with a little jewellery saw practice. The first efforts weren't really up to scratch. It may take some time but with a little more care I think I can make a reasonable job of cutting the brass sheet.

DSC03012.thumb.JPG.dc3df74c434eabbea9ac8d9659c25322.JPG

DSC03013.thumb.JPG.a6db921e0842bc4d0efa33b60c199523.JPG

I think its going to take quite a few hours of sawing.

Yes, I would think that this would be a typical job for photoetching.

I would actually give it to my laser-cutter to chew ... and then build up the body with acrylic gel, followed by some gilding.

There are also these '3D-printing sticks', sort of hand-held extruders with which one can build-up such patterns.

Ian, Druxey, Eberhard - All much better ideas than cutting out with a jewellers saw. I sometimes like doing things the hard way! Photo etch is my option 2. I don't have access to a 3d printer or a laser cutter. Perhaps Santa will oblige.

That sawing looks very accurate Keith - worthy of any jewellers (except Ratners). Speaking as someone who doesn't have a 3d printer or etching stuff, I'd say persevere - for the satisfaction alone. Maybe build up with two part metal epoxy?

Thick paint should work, building it up in layers. Epoxy "paint" might be good because it hardens and can be filed, sanded and polished.

I like working with solder because you can carve it with a hobby knife, scrape and file it to shape, and polish it with a wire brush.

But whatever you do I am sure it will come out excellent!

Andy, Rick, Phil.  Thank you all for continuing to follow my lamentable progress. I haven't had time to post much or to look at how everyone is getting on with their builds. I must try harder to catch up.

The culprit (photo below) breezed into the workshop about a month ago and drew the dolls house she wanted for Christmas. So the  boat was parked and the house build took over.

I am continuing to make a bit of progress as a side line to the dolls house.

DSC03081.thumb.JPG.868b39e1e7d352aa3979ab1021afad6c.JPGDSC03080.thumb.JPG.b0ce589987187cea8e5e565fa604c711.JPG

After another coat of varnish I had a bit of a diversion on to the port holes.

The frames were turned on the lathe. 28 in total. They are quite simple with a constant outside diameter of 9mm and a step on the internal diameter of 0.5mm (7mm diameter hole). The bore takes a window of 8mm diameter.

DSC03082.thumb.JPG.b99ee11ee2752dcce0674e4edfdfaa70.JPG

I manufactured a punch to form the 8mm windows. The windows were punched out of acetate sheet. In the photo the widows still have their protective films on both faces.

DSC03083.thumb.JPG.5d5264865beb652f5c5a8cf50b12df63.JPG

Then a couple of more coats of varnish, finished with quite coarse wire wool between each application to remove any fibres. The varnish is polyurethane thinned 1 to 1 with white spirits and wiped on with a lint free rag.

DSC03084.thumb.JPG.b7c757c8c317a0353a600917329e1292.JPGDSC03085.thumb.JPG.51e2bbfe92374b93cbcbcd8116d600bb.JPGDSC03087.thumb.JPG.6c8113d4ae1e62ef97433f016f29b6d3.JPGDSC03088.thumb.JPG.e14593024a8943851f258038c1c2d04b.JPG

I decided I had been avoiding the gingerbread toooooo long so I fasted 2 pieces of 1/64" brass strip together with double sided tape and glued the cutting template in place.

I have ordered a packet of 6/0 saw blades (76 tpi). These should arrive tomorrow. These blades should just about work when cutting double thickness 1/64" sheets. I suppose I should have gone for 8/0 blades (89 tip) but I think the sawing would have taken forever. I am going to have to cut the gingerbread in several pieces as it is circa 7 inches long and the throat of my jewellers saw is only 3 inches.

Years ago I made an interesting observation, when trying to saw out some bulkheads from 0.25 mm brass sheet: the saw tended to hook and distort the brass, but when I turned (counterintuitively) the blade upside-down it cut like butter ... don't remember the pitch, but it must have been in the order of 8/0. Some people also fasten the brass sheet to a piece of thin plywood to give the saw more meat.
