I like the idea of the alignment rods!  I will have to remember that!

Yes, Keith has a lot of tricks that we all could remember. That doesn't mean that we get to be like Keith, but it does mean we get to act like Keith.

Phil, Tom, Pat - you are all too kind ---- and a good balance to my wife who finds plenty to critisise about me.

The weather here continues to be mild. Yesterday Scotland had it warmest January day ever recorded - 19c. In the south it was somewhat cooler, never making it above  a pleasant 14c. Apparently a southerly wind is blowing straight up from the Sahara delivering plenty of warmth and tons of red dust. the dust hasn't arrived yet.

All this means that I got plenty of time in the workshop over the weekend. This is a good thing because the rest of the week is taken up with Grandparent duties.

Anyway here is the update.

Having got to the area of the prop shaft I decided to be clever and install the prop shaft tunnel now rather than later. The final section of keel has a knuckle and I very carefully shaped the aft keel piece so that the inner edge provided the alignment

reference for the prop shaft. I know that sounds confusing but all may become clear later.

The aft keel piece was installed and glued in place.

DSC02480.thumb.JPG.6b4ceea2a98a183c1f667050a2dba5b6.JPGDSC02481.thumb.JPG.5d7919c4f1dc051ba0452d6b1f8d99d1.JPG

I then turned the shaft tunnel and cut a slot along its length. This slot is inserted into the keel to locate the tunnel in its correct position and at the correct angle.

DSC02482.thumb.JPG.636a7d0c430d043b1e5238c09aeecf6e.JPG

I thought I would avoid cutting away the frames that supported the keel so I cut the shaft tunnel into segments and glued these in place. The next picture should make clear my earlier confusing description.

DSC02485.thumb.JPG.2be05f05c3088683bf4057a85366f53a.JPG

DSC02486.thumb.JPG.c5416b4213dc5187eb342f70902bdbf1.JPG

Now that would have been great if only I hadn't messed up the position of the shaft. This was about 1/8" below where it needed to be (i.e too high in the hull). The good thing was that I found this now rather than later.

So off it came and on to plan B.

The aft keel section was  well stuck by this stage so it was a case of some tricky sawing to get the alignment section back to where it needed to be.

DSC02487.thumb.JPG.d64f9c44c5c20c665cdb7e5a4e21e807.JPG

I remade the shaft tunnel and threw away the idea of fitting it in segments. it was a daft idea after all. I then glued it in place having checked and rechecked it was in the right place.

DSC02488.thumb.JPG.c63584166fc4078d3aaba75fc4dd8760.JPG

I then proceeded with installing the last of the frames.  I also installed slotted keel pieces, the slot being necessary to take the somewhat elaborate stern post. The bracing "floors" also continued to go in.

DSC02489.thumb.JPG.a88d71d6b93c8646e56a8684485187fd.JPG

DSC02490.thumb.JPG.e9bbd5c013ed6863ea3e62de77cfe1df.JPG

The final keel piece then went in. This final piece defines the angle of the transom which I think I got right.

DSC02491.thumb.JPG.fae57e3e03aa7f1f9f5eb0c97496db28.JPG

Then I left it overnight and everything dried rock solid.

DSC02492.thumb.JPG.2c702bbdbdaf49c0fec319bd13551ef8.JPG

If I screwed anything up this is now all firewood.😬

Kieth,

I like the way you think things through and plan carefully. OK, so the first effort at the stern tube was a bit off, but if you weren't being so thorough checking and rechecking you wouldn't have noticed - and neither would anyone else!

I enjoy following your work, and always look forward to learning from you new and better ways to do things.

Thank you for the complements Phil. In this instance the mistake would have become obvious when the screw didn't fit in the correct position relative to the stern post.

What everyone else said about the build, Keith!

About our spouses thoughts of our mental state. I just heard that, when you retire and don't have the day-to-day job that keeps you occupied, you need something that gives you purpose to wake up, roll the legs over the side of the bed and get up. Just for fun, paint the idea to the Admiral of you just sitting in your couch all day, watching TV-shop and silly as h*** game shows asking when the coffee's ready or when is lunch. "Would that be better?" you ask. "Now at least, I'm not in your way all the time hunny" 😉

Happy modelling!

I assume she is still up for sale. I seem to remember reading an article that suggested she would be a difficult sale because her steam propulsion limited the market to enthusiasts. Presumably the yuppy boat buyers all want the convenience of instant diesel power. A pity really as she may be deteriorating in storage for some time. She really needs to go the a bunch of steam enthusiasts to be operated as a working museum ship for the benefit of the public at large. Hopefully she will find a deserving owner.

The weather continues to be unseasonably mild with the workshop hovering around 13c.

Unfortunately progress has been somewhat disturbed by family commitments.

In the following 2 images I have balanced felt tip pens on the floors which are installed at the correct level. The ones without pens are just bracings for the frames.

DSC02493.thumb.JPG.1dfd12492e3d8f9de5eacc8dd1ac4b85.JPGDSC02494.thumb.JPG.415e16c2f6ca96d07409eb64adb4ed97.JPG

The boiler room floor is just above the keel and hence does little to brace the frames in this area. Additional balsa wood blocks are installed to brace the frames in this area. These will be removed once the planking is suitably advanced.

Now for something you will all recognise - a short lived technology no longer with us!

DSC02495.thumb.JPG.4d5c38ed666b0efb8a6aa0f240835afc.JPG

I saved these because I thought they would come in handy at some time.

DSC02496.thumb.JPG.41546a81bbb2be0b911224828317ea0f.JPG

I wanted some very thin but stiff shims to insert in the cut lines for the deck. This supported deck edge pieces while the glue dried.

DSC02504.thumb.JPG.400a47de2e675cfa7b770ef3b8607255.JPG

I also cut out all the up-stands that were originally used in combination with the alignment rods.

Hi Keith,

am I the only one who doesn`t recognise those bent and die-cast sheet metal things? If so, then I don`t mind.

But don`t keep suspense any longer. Please tell me what was their original purpose.

I`m 57 years old. Should I know what they were made for ;-)?

Now I got it. And I have a vague memory of the 3.5" ones.

Terrific work on the hull support structure, Keith.  So important to get this stage of development right, especially in a model as large as this.  Great precision and clearly carefully thought-out.  Oh, and I too was scratching my head until Andy's mind went all floppy.

Thank you Keith and Gary.

I was going to have a productive day in the workshop but it was not to be. My somewhat recently neglected Byrnes saw decided I didn't love it any more so it threw a sulk and after a few hesitant attempts at starting it threw in the towel. If I manually kick over the blade it angrily bursts into life and bites my prodding stick. Ooch!

I think I need to buy a new CAP (maybe a bowler).

At least I have learned summat (Yorkshire dialect). the 40/85/21 means that its operational range is -40c  to 85c and it will withstand 21 days at 95% relative humidity at - 40c.

P.S. Note to self  - remember not to lick the terminals - it may be less dead than it is pretending to be.
