Rattlesnake by JPett - Model Shipways - Scale 1/64th - Kit #MS2028

J.Pett:

I really think that so much tapering on the wales is not necessary. I think that the wales should be left full width as much as possible.. Their upper edge should be spiled to follow the sheer line, but the bottom edge just should not have that much tapering. Try to think of the wales as a stand alone area that is not so much a part of the rest of the planking layout. They serve a special purpose and tapering them is really not part of that purpose. Lay them first, then line off the hull for the rest of the planking. The wales spiled edge will usually follow the sheer line of the vessel in question,.

Only because I want to know I brought the plans into PS and now see that I must correct my last correction. As you stated the wales do not taper except at the bow. Why I was seeing a taper at bulkhead "E" I do not know. Oddly I still see it when I look at the plans but this image of the plans clearly shows it does not start until bulkhead "C" and may also be slightly exaggerated by the fact the planks are moving away from you. I also see that I used 3 strakes and it looks like the plans only call for 2. I will plead "newbie" on this

Thanks for helping me to clarify this

I am not sure how that plan was derived. Actually, there should probably be 3-4 strakes of wales, but that is beside the point about how much taper they had. At this point, it really does not matter since the hull is planked and it looks good. I see no reason to alter your painting scheme though. Paint the wales black if that is the color you want to use and be done with it. That is the best you can do and it will look just fine.

JP,

Did you take into account the deformation a drawing like that will show at the bow due to the bend in the planks ... I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't need to taper at all

Well I have finally climbed out of the hole I dug for myself, or I should say drilled for myself.

First off,  I did not intend to do this.

Next I will be preceding with phase two of my repair, Painting the hull "lol'". Worry not, I have a plan. :)

It started with adding a few tree nails. I was not happy with the result so I added a few more. Then a lot more. After I finished I was still was not happy with the way it looked. At that point I made the decision to fall back and paint the hull; but only after I repeated what took over 30 hours to do. I still had the other side.

Was this a mistake, I would go with it was a whopper. :pirate41:

Ironically I have high hopes regarding how she will turn out in the end.  There are over 3000 treenails (I estimate it at 3400) and I plan to do a light coat which I hope will allow the treenails to have some effect on the finish. We shall see. Right now I am telling myself that what I have planned will be something that I will be very happy with.

Truthfully,  I am just happy to have gotten through this.Thank you MSW, for providing me with the much needed inspiration. I read a lot of logs during this period.

I am now looking forward to doing something a little less repetitive, its a shame I couldn't start the ratlines

Thanks for stopping by

You did a fine job treenailing the hull. I would not paint over it. It looks like you have a real plank on frame model, instead of plank on bulkhead. Good work.

What museum is this going to? I honestly think you should stay with the natural wood hull. It pops with the tree nails, I don't what you got up your sleeve as far as paint goes but u wouldn't take away from what you have now. Wow !!!!

Let me add my vote to the others, JPett:  the treenailing looks good.  Maybe you just aren't used to seeing those little spots all line up, but they do look good to me.

JP,

I didn't mention my opinion of whether to paint. That's your choice of what the model is to be to you. If it's a display of how a ship model is built, of the craftsmanship or artistry involved, of the details that can go into it --- then leave out the paint. If this is meant to be a representation of a historical vessel, paint it appropriately if you want. (Even then, LOTS of treenails will still be showing)

Brian

Ahoy Mates :D

Thank you all for your inspiring words

As I am sure you can all see this was a lot of work. But because this is only a hobby, and one I enjoy very much; thankfully I do not concern myself with how much time it takes. The new skills I am learning and as Popeye put it "how much fun you're having" are my only real priorities here.

I will admit that there were times (quite a few) during this last project however, that keeping it fun was a bit of a challenge. I apologize for not posting the pics I took that document how I reached this stage in my build. I built a new computer and have not transferred my photos yet. If anyone is interested I can post them in a bit.

Brian: It reminds me of the chicken pox. It stands a little too proud for my taste and I am afraid in the end it will be a distraction: Judging by the responses however, I may postpone/reconsider, or at least do the painting in stages. Your hull on the other hand looks great.

Russ; TY, I wish I had choosen a wood that finished closer in color to the Basswood. I think having Box wood cut into 1/32 by 1/32 strips might have been a better choice. Next time :) PS: It was quite the learning experence, it is done and I will be doing it again.

Popeye: You are so right :)

Augie: We both know who won the bet. Even if I paint it

Wayne: TY for your comment, I understand you are moving to one of my favorite areas. Enjoy the seafood and the views. The winters can get interesting but they do make the spring and summer better.

Ferit: It is I who am humbled by your craftsmanship. If I would have thought twice a month ago I might be rigging right now "lol" Who are we kidding

Eric: I have to admit, I laughed when I read your comment. Putting it anywhere will require me finishing it. At my age and this rate that could be a problem.

Ben: Just isn't my cup of tea right now. Maybe it will grow on me.

Martin: If you look you will see the patterns are very simple. There are three of them. I did it in layers using the grid in the green work surface to come up with the patterns (in the pics).

Sam: Just don't let it inspire you too much "lol"

Back to the Build

I have taped off the wales or what I belive to be the wales. Because I tapered these planks I fudged the tape line into the forth plank about a 64th as it comes around to the bow. I am going to do one side and work from there. Wish me luck :)

JP,

While I agree with everyone else about the treenails, it is your ship.   But paint???? post-76-0-53927000-1372648974.gif  Seriously, do what you think is right.

JP,

That really is some masterful work. If you were to put a clear sealer coat or two on it before painting, you could sand off the paint should you not like it and it would not have wicked into the wood pores. Just a thought.

It really does look wonderful!

If that were my work on that hull, I would need to ask for forgiveness for the Sin of Pride everytime I looked at my model.

It is absolutely gorgeous.

Another vote for no paint, that said, it is your model and you can choose to do it any way you wish!

Really, really hope you don't paint it though! :-)
