I'll keep that in mind, Dave ... if (when ??) my own carving skills prove to be woefully inadequate.

Began the morning with a real downer. Ready to begin rigging spars for both Mayflowers and discovered that all the blocks in my boneyard are too large for either of these ships. My bad!

So now, I'll work on shaping the larger scale spars while I must wait for Model Expo to ship me my blocks.

Then remembered, a friend had recommended the Syren Company's blocks as being much better quality.... So I placed an order with Chuck.

I'm going to have blocks coming out my yang!

Pretty excited to begin their riggings....

Hey, stuff happens Dave but it's better discovering outsized blocks now and having the sources for good new ones.  I'll take a few of your blocks off your hands - - IF they are scale 1:80 in Amsterdam feet  ;)   I can use a whole buch for my VOC ship.

Cheers,

Just found your build log Dave. (So many, and so little time!) Your Mayflower looks marvelous! Very nice attention to detail. I know it's a little late in the day, but Happy Birthday and be there many more in your future.

Cheers

So my blocks arrived, and I finally rigged all the spars for both Mayflowers....

And figured I was ready to begin hanging the rigged spars this morning.

NOT!

Pulled out Chuck's instruction book, which I must admit, I have not been using up to this point.... my mistake.

If I had been reading Chuck's instructions, rather than just creating and building to the Plan Sheets, I would have read the last paragraph on page 38 under the heading Mizzen Stay....

"You might have thought it logical to rig the shrouds on the main mast next. But doing so would make it harder to tackle the mizzen stay"

Guess what!!!!

That's not all....

So I go to work on, SOMEHOW working out a way to rig the tackles to the main and mizzen masts, and discover that I don't have a single belaying pin in my bone yard that is the right scale for the smaller ship.

Not the first time I've created belaying pins from tooth picks....

Still trying to do everything the hard way.

Patrick.... Not as tuff as you might think.

Just mark the end of a tooth pick, stick it in a Dremel Tool chuck and start spinning against a small file.

These are really tiny, so I had to be very careful not to break them off before finishing the shape.

Here you go....

Seen here, I nip off the tip of each end and mark the length of the shank and the top end. Then cut the toothpick in half.

Make up a bundle of as many as you wish to make.

post-11777-0-11380800-1422557317_thumb.jpg

First cut.... score with Exact-o blade then shape with small file.

Next cut....score with Exact-o blade and shape with small file.

Final shaping....

post-11777-0-39090800-1422557537_thumb.jpg

Hope this helps. Pretty simple process.... Less than 5 minutes per pin.

Sorry that 4th pic came out a little out of focus, but you get the point.
