  1. AL didn't give a lot of extra mahogany for planking.... I had a few mis-steps and ended up with maybe one full plank if you added all the parts together. I've never tried to contact AL... that would be my first try. Anyone else???
  2. Welcome Mike! Good to see you made the jump Yep, perfection is the goal and lots of fun can be had in trying to reach it Look forward to seeing your build progress.
  3. Hope it's an easy fix Adriaan. On going health issues are draining As someone (Mark) said... the wood is patient... get better... it'll wait for you
  4. Happy Birthday Ray Have a nice cool belgium and enjoy the day!
  5. Real nice work Jack. I like your method for staining the edges of the decking... I'll have to remember this for future builds.
  6. Yep! Cross grain will snap, almost everytime while with the grain will bend most of the time It applies to all woods too cause it all has to do with fibers/grain. Even knowing this, many a plank I have snapped...
  7. Very nice Wolf! Precise and crisp. You're very good at this stuff you know.
  8. I agree with the first two respondents... it sounds possible but also sounds like the results will not really be what you will want and may end up costing as much or more. IMO ... either get another plastic kit to revisit your youth or find a wooden kit that you like and can afford. The two together doesn't really appeal to me but as is said a few thousand times on this site.... your ship, your decisions
  9. Very nice Sjors... crisp and clean. Well done. As to the wolves back in the Netherlands... good.... every nation needs apex predators.. other than politicians I mean
  10. You're pretty creative and handy so maybe you should make your own rope walk. I've seen plan on the web that show various styles. Then you could buy decent thread and make your own.... pretty much an unlimited supply then eh?
  11. I don't know where I've been for these last few months or so but I just found your build... just in time it seems. That's okay tho since I get to go from start to finish in one sitting. Well done Mario! Beautiful! I like the little touches, the net and basket and especially the anchor. Love that anchor for some reason It's so... perfectly fitting.
  12. Happy Birthday Aaron. 31? ..... I remember 31... barely Been a while since we heard from you... still making progress on the SF?
  13. Put the camera on a stack of books or a sturdy table, pre-focus and touch the shutter ever so gently.... might take a few tries but as long as the camera doesn't move when the shutter is open then it's picture time... Yea!!
  14. Nah, you don't talk too much... well, you are a commodore so maybe you do talk a tad I suppose hope you enjoyed your vacation... tomorrow it's back to the road and the customers... so you go slow for a while... so what... we got months worth of pictures out of you in a mere week... wow!
  15. I think you're english is very good Ferit... a little mistake here and there but so what, everybody makes mistakes and I think what you intend to say is easy to understand ... I can only imagine how bad I would sound if I had to speak your native tongue.
  16. Looking good Eddie and your repair is spot on. Nice looking lines on that vessel.
  17. I think Ferit means HE is 'late' to your build Kevin
  18. Thank you Ferit. Your confidence in me is uplifiting. I always like your suggestions too and your drawing looks very similar to the way I just did a prototype with the bottom ring forming around a fat 1.5mm sewing needle stuck into a board. I need the junction to be farther from the deadeye tho as when I solder I fear the flame being that close to the wooden deadeye. In that case I probably will not wrap the top. True, I know how to solder but not well enough to make it an easy time.... most of the time it is trial and error ... I have to do 30 deadeyes with strops and around number 15 or so I'll start to get a rhythm I hope!
  19. My ship, the san francisco, also by AL, is my first build and it has been both a blessing and a curse. I had woodworking experience but no ship knowledge, none at all. The instructions are written in 6 languages so that works for most but they assume I know more than i do. Also, their directions are sparse... for example for planking... 'go ahead and apply planks to the hull and sand when finished". One sentence oh boy! That one sentence took me weeks and weeks to accomplish. Plus their pictures don't necessarily match and 3 views of the same part show different solutions. Sounds horrible right? Well, not really because it forced me to push myself, figure it out myself and lean on fellow modelers here on this site and that is the blessing part. So, I learned, maybe better and deeper than if they had held my hand. All in all, a great beginner ship that was at the beginning far over my head .... not now tho!
