  1. Launching ways done well look really nice but I have seen some that kind of look out of place under a really nice model.
  2. So I have decided to throw my hat into the ring with my next project. It was a toss up between this and the Longboat. I decided on this one as I was able to obtain a Longboat replacement wood package in pear (from Crown Timberyard prior to their "maintenance"). I wanted to save that for when I have a bit more skill. It was pretty interesting to learn that there are not too many builds of this kit here on MSW. Blue Ensign, Tigersteve, Mike Y and MikeB4 and a few others are about it. For tonight its going to be inventory desk clean up and sanding char.... Yuk! Although there is remarkable little on this well made kit. Hopefully it won't take 4 years like the last build.
  3. Wonderfull work with such clean joints. I am surprised at how large the camber is.
  4. Everything looks great Dave. I was interested in seeing how that liver of sulfur was working out for you.
  5. Absolutely fantastic work. Will be following along with the rest of the build.
  6. Welcome! It looks like you are off to a great start.
  7. I have seen these in a bunch of plans and models. Originally I was wondering what type of mechanical or structural advantage they would provide give the added complexity. Then after looking at them for sometime I figured they probably allowed for a larger hatch opening to the lower decks. I could be wrong. In any case for your question I’m not sure when they first were used.
  8. Truly impressive! Thanks for sharing.
  9. Outstanding! I especially love the two projects together. The pictures really show the differences in scale.
  10. Sorry to hear that Chuck and Jack. Take care of family. We will still be here when you get back.
  11. Nerves of steel. I can't imagine messing up so much work with just a single shake of the hand. I guess you can cover some of it with another row of planking.
  12. Its so clean that the last picture almost looks like a computer generated image.
  13. Looking good. I always wondered how people dealt with the finished/unfinished side.
  14. I likely will not keep this down in my office where I work on the model as it will generate too much dust. It’s a nice thing that the only requirement I had for my wife when we bought our house was that it have a three car garage. Everything else I didn’t really care about. So I have lots of space in the garage for tools and other toys.
  15. oooo Casablanca in theaters for its 75th anniversary. Will have to look that up. Nice progress.
  16. I have the option for a large bandsaw on a stand. It is at least a few decades old likely going on 40-50 years or so. Interestingly it has the motor attached underneath the stand with a belt going up through the base to the saw above. It was my grandfathers-in-law and he created many very nice tight pieces with it. There are many different replacement blades and belts in a box as well. My mother-in-law says it works just fine. As soon as I can clean it up and bring it down here will see if it will be adequate for modeling. I have high hopes.
  17. I know what you mean. I had in my mind an entire progressive plan from the Queen Anne barge to pinnace (out of box) to longboat (with wood upgrade package) etc etc. Each step learning and practicing more up until I got up the nerve for a scratch section. Might be rethinking all that and jumping into the dark side earlier than planned.
