I agree on the wipe-on giving the planks a nice color contrast. Much better than the same color over-all. Nice work Mark!

I like the way you think Ken. I've got a question, and it's probably something I missed in previous posts, but adding the thickness of the planking, to the thickness of the plywood, isn't that a little more than what was removed from the bulkhead? I'm asking because if it's off, the height of the cannon-barrels wouldn't line up right in the gun ports would they?

Planking for Ships Boats
GLakie replied to mikiek's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
A lot, if not most, guys here look for a link in your signature for a build log Mike. Until you mentioned it and added the link, I didn't know myself. Anyway, with the Niagara, the plans for the ship's boats should be 1 : 1 scale, so you can take measurements directly off the plans for the width of the planks. The thickness should be indicated there someplace as well. probably 1/32" thick. What you could do is go over the "Kit-Build Logs" and find a few guys there that have built them and ask them if you're not sure about a certain step. -
There's some major renovations going on for the next couple years or so. Thanks for posting the pics.

Planking for Ships Boats
GLakie replied to mikiek's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
The best way to get help and encouragement would be to post a build-log so all of us can take a look and chime in with answers Mike. Also there are topics found on the main page that may answer many questions you might have. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/forum/14-building-framing-planking-and-plating-a-ships-hull-and-deck/ -
There's a section found on the main page, called "Masting - Rigging and Sails", that you should be able to find the answer you're looking for. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/forum/16-masting-rigging-and-sails/page-1?prune_day=100&sort_by=Z-A&sort_key=last_post&topicfilter=all

I can see where rigging would tend to be frustrating Michael, but maybe after all of the "to do" of the Holidays is over, things will relax enough to "attack" it again with fresh eyes. I hope you and yours have a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Congrats on hitting this milestone Mark. I know you've been waiting patiently for the (hull-planking) finish-line.

The stern looks great Vince. That's a scary amount of windows, and ornamentation there, and I think a lot of guys would have given up on her by now. Nice work~!!

Cutty Sark by NenadM
GLakie replied to NenadM's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1851 - 1900
That piece is called a "quoin" Nenad. It is not generally rectangle in shape from the side view, but wedge-shaped at the side-view and rectangle-shaped from the top-view. It is used for elevating the gun up or down by sliding it in or out from front to back.- 4,152 replies

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
