  1. Fabulous work as usual Heinz A merry Christmas to you Nigel
  2. This may be a different kit Tony,it was Mark Taylor that told me the kit he was using voided the warranty. He may be able to shed a little light on this My personal opinion is that there isn't a one size fits all mill. For really small detail work with small cutters the MF70 is ideal. For larger work and metals,I would go for the Sherline or a larger Proxxon.I have seen the small yellow mill available from machine mart in the flesh and it looks like a decent bit of kit for the money if you want something.larger and slower Might be worth investigating. Kind Regards Nigel
  3. Hi Tony,I totally agree with Paul,You need RPM to get a good finish on wood especially running small cutters. There is good reason why woodworking routers run up to 30,000 RPM and this is using cutters up to 25mm in diameter. Incidentally fitting the high speed kit to the Sherline mill will void the warranty as I understand it. Kind Regards Nigel
  4. Very impressive Kevin, she is looking great Count your blessings,it's been raining most of the time for the last two weeks up ere Extensive flooding but we have been fortunate to escape that, just. Kind Regards Nigel
  5. Excellent Daniel I assume you plan on including the copper tiles. The more and more I see of your design, the more excited I become.A bit like a kid in a sweet shop, but I am 43 years of age . This is going to be an awesome kit!! Kind Regard Nigel
  6. Dunno how I missed this Daniel The 3d render of the model looks superb Top marks for going with Pear for the planking I do hear where Boyd is coming from though.Whilst your bulkhead system guarantees an accurate framework, there are the variables of fairing and sanding of the first ply layer.Don't get me wrong,I REALLY like the idea of the prespilled Pear planks,I hope it works out. One thing,if I may suggest. What I found when skinning the upper half of Nuestra Senora is that some marks on the bulkheads for where the joins of the ply patterns fall would make things more foolproof. If possible, could these be laser etched on the bulkheads during the cutting process? Kind Regards Nigel
  7. Congrats Mark on a job well done It will not be overly long before you can release her from the building jig Kind Regards Nigel
  8. Excellent work Bob Gosh.you really have 'motored' along since my last visit Kind Regards Nigel
  9. Truly wonderful work Heinz Your Elderberry plywood is a nice bit of thinking 'out of the box'.The results speak volumes. Those windows blew my mind .They look spectacular, not easy to do in any scale, let alone 1/72!!!!!!!!!!!. Kind Regards Nigel
  10. My admiration for taking the bold step to alter your masts to the correct height Dimitris Your build is looking fantastic Kind Regards Nigel
  11. That is going to look supercrisp Jason One suggestion which you may or may not have though of.I personally would plank about the walnut and sand smooth before fitting the box blackstrake. This would maintain the crisp edge to the strake added afterwards and is much easier to sand to a fair surface Kind Regards Nigel
  12. I will complicate things even further for you Jason Did you know you can apply polyurethane over Tung oil?Only recommendation according to my research is to allow a few days for the oil to finish 'gassing out'.Surprisingly my research says that Tung oil is one of the finishes far less likely to 'yellow'.This is a lesser amount than poly.Sorry for confusing you further. This is only down to surfing the net and not my own experience. The blue does look good and probably one of the best unmixed shades I have seen Anyway,I will let you get back to your planking Kind Regards Nigel
  13. Thank you Janet and Crackers This thread is 2 years old now.I have a supplier for Pearwood and will thickness sand to what I require for a larger order Kind Regards Nigel
  14. Sorry,I thought I would have a look around to no avail.I can't believe that this book has sold out, then again it went to press when the partwork of SOS started in the UK.I bought a copy when it was hot off the press.Depending on exactly what you want the book for,I found Hiendrik Busmanns book of more use. However this is very expensive and out of print.I waited 8months for a copy to come up at sensible money in the US and had it shipped to the UK.This book though is only available in German, however the wealth of illustrations of the carvings make it a worthwhile investment if you plan on modelling the vessel. Kind Regards Nigel
  15. Hi Heinz I think you are possibly reaching the limits of the timber.Other than trying to glue the pieces to a backer whilst carving, boxwood wood have probably been the only answer. This wouldn't have matched the other timber. The scrolls look good and as you say only the purist will know the difference Your first window is great, not an easy job especially in 1/72!!!!!!!!! Kind Regards Nigel
  16. I see no reason why the ports cannot be shown open. The historical exactness of most kits, especially Italian ones can be dubious at the best of times. In the scratchbuild section is a model of LaCreole by Archjofo. This features Carronades and the ports you describe. His model is built to one of the monographs based on painstaking historical research,so it is safe to say this is an actual feature on French vessels. Here is one of the ports(hope Johann doesn't mind) Kind Regards Nigel
  17. Great work and a nice solution Jason If it comes as some conciliation, despite doing this for many years now,I will always find the little curl on the end of the wale a PITA Kind Regards Nigel
  18. Thank you very much indeed Rob I had a suspicion you avatar was based on the Snowberry kit,but sometimes size is hard to judge on the water from a small pic . I would recommend to anyone who wanted to build a model of Caroline that accurately followed the book, they would have to scratchbuild. It is worth mentioning though that the book itself is a best 'guess' by the authors. Many details are not proven historical fact.Whichever route the builder takes, she builds into a very attractive model and I do feel the kit is one of Panart's better offerings. Kind Regards Nigel
  19. I am sorry to hear of your Father's passing.Completing the model is a very nice tribute. He has given you an excellent start . Regarding the ships launch,it is still the same one in the kit now.I built mine from scratch but it was a bit of a compromise as I wanted to use the kit's brass decoration. It looks more like the book version, just not as long . I think if you try to follow the book too closely like myself and Janos tried to do,you realise there is alot amiss.Even the hull is the wrong shape,so I just used the book as a guide for some of the smaller details. My build is currently on hold as we are hoping to move house.I am at the stage where it is the fragile bits,so would rather wait until after the upheaval. Is that a Flower class as your avatar? Kind Regards Nigel
  20. As always Karl, exceptional work Kind Regards Nigel
