Looking good mate. I would have to agree things would be easier if you were to use something else besides balsa. I like bass and aspen. David B

3D Printing - Not Just Yet!
dgbot replied to dvm27's topic in CAD and 3D Modelling/Drafting Plans with Software
Pretty good. At a club meeting one of the members brought in some pieces done by 3d. The company he works for uses them. And like you said. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. The general consensus was that for super fine detail it was cheaper to cast the part. The cannon barrel was perfect. But at 4.59 each not worth getting one. David B -

Years ago a friend of mine owned a model shop that specialized in ship models may he R.I.P The swift was the kit that he would sell to a beginner. It makes into a real beauty and the wood can be easily replaced. Even though not fancy, I have seen several of them in many different places. David B

Several members of my clubs have been doing the Longboat and have had the same problems. It was discovered that if you only use white glue you can redo a frame or part. One member had to redo most of his frames. By saturating the part in iso alcohol and wrapping it the glue dissolved after a couple of hours. In your case it might no take as long. Do one frame at a time. David B

Popeye, I just finished going through your build log and I found your build very enlightening. I have always had a fondness for working vessels. The way you are building your Syborn has taught me many new things. David B

You have a ton of patience. This latest do over is a test in getting things right. My hat is off to you. Spyglass, spot gluing is usually a small drop to have a temporary bond that is used for placement or alignment. When you need to remove the part that little drop is easier to remove. David B

One of the things I have learned using acrylics. I have a Badger 360 a real nice one with no complaints. I have found that no matter what acrylic paint you use it will dry out. There for I keep a bottle of cleaner by my side. When using the gravity feed which is most of the time I would fill it with cleaner and rinse it out. This might seem silly. But several artist I know recommend doing this. It helps keep the your airbrush clean. When an internal mix gets clogged it can be a nightmare. I normally use Badgers Modelflex paint because it is already for airbrushing no thinning. For brush work it use to be Floquil. Now Tamya or Model Master Acrylic. David B

After looking everything over I followed the same as before and assmbled the hull starting out with the backbone and then and then after assembling the turret I installed the gun deck.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
