  1. I totally mucked up my first layer of planking on my build because I did a poor job fairing. I felt very inadequate and like I had wasted the money as well, probably lost at least one night's sleep over it. Then I tore it off, all the planking (mainly because everyone on my build log told me too and deep down I knew they were right, but I still didn't know how to redo it better). I restarted, asked and received some help and I was able to make it through that hurdle. Bluejacket, I believe, will help you out; they are even active on this board. It is entirely up to you, but if you want to you'll be able to build that ship. Thankfully, it's wood and parts can be remade.
  2. There is a lot of wisdom to this and I don’t plan on removing the tape until after the ports are painted. I have finished up making the ports, then I installed and painted the wales. Of course once I removed the tape from the wales I did notice a spot that I will have to touch up when I get the black paint back out.
  3. Darn, that’s so frustrating. Good luck getting it resolved. Hopefully it isn’t too much of a hassle.
  4. Those hems look like a single fold (and did you glue panels or simulate the stitches with scouring?), did you do anything to pretreat the cloth? I may be using garbage material but when I cut it I get a terribly frayed edge. Sorry for all the questions, but these look really nice and sound really easy so I’d love to get it figured out in my head.
  5. Yours look really nice; everyone seems to have their own method but have you posted yours before?
  6. I’m sorry to hear about this; I had been enjoying your build a lot. I’ve never done any coppering and while I can understand your reasoning I think that you were doing a good job. I’ll keep an eye out for your next build!
  7. That is so frustrating; I’m really sorry to hear it. I looked at crafty sailor and unfortunately those sails are “coming soon” (https://craftysailor.com/collections/sails) but maybe you could reach out and see when they’d be available? Of course this doesn’t seem to lend itself to the “quick” aspect of the build either...
  8. Yes, these are called cross sections (there are also bow sections and stern sections, but these are less common, i think) . I didn't see one for the HMS Bounty in a quick search though.
  9. Great save so far! I’ll have to keep your resolve to salvage it in mind for the inevitable mistakes that I do in the future! I’m glad to see the restoration; it was and is again looking very nice!
  10. Working through the gun ports. MSW is such a help when it comes to seemingly simple tasks like this. I did some research and saw people drilling out the gun ports and filing them out so I followed. First I cut the vertical lines. Then drilled small holes across. Lastly filed the port down to finish it off. I’m enjoying this step more than I should be. I think it’s because I’m finally using the nice files I bought (that still need a tool sleeve 😁).
  11. Take a look through this thread, I think it has a lot of pertinent information for you:
  12. I’m partial to Vanguard’s Alert... but there may be some choice supportive bias at work there 🙂. I haven’t looked at Model Shipways too much, but maybe the armed Virginia Sloop? Sticking to a single mast might be a good idea. I’m looking forward to whatever you choose!
  13. I think Tony is spot on for accuracy... but I think they look neat. Judging by the fact that you’re asking I’m going to throw my vote behind - Sure, why not? It’s awesome to have a finished model but the journey, that is really the fun. If it adds significant time but you think it’d be a nice addition then I say go for it.
  14. Small update - Planked and painted the inner bulwarks. As a note for my future self the Humbrol went on really nicely straight from the container so I didn’t end up thinning it at all. I also have marked the gun port locations using the kit template. I’ll draw the gun ports in next. I decided to put of placing the wale mainly because I don’t have a great way to mark the run of it yet. I thought I could use a compass, but the one I own will not work at all so hopefully I can come up with a better solution while I’m working on the gun ports. (Also please keep your fingers crossed for when I pull back the tape 😁)
  15. As a beginner and maybe a hair above a complete novice this is critical. I would hate to mess something up when I intend on putting so much time and effort in and having quality explanations and detailed pictures helps give one confidence in carrying out each step. For a beginner I think the instructions are probably the most important aspect of the kit. One of the more difficult steps (to me so far) was fairing and seeing those guides etched into the frames will certainly help the build!
  16. Thanks Ryland, this is what I assumed (and I probably should have ordered a little more paint until I determine what the correct ratio is). Thank you! This gives me a reasonable starting point. I'll have to think about how much I want the grain to show through, but I feel like I would want it to at least a little. I need to carve out a longer chunk of time before I start painting I think; at least I have the deck marked off and ready to go.
  17. Looks really good! Are you going to take her out on the water? Or does she have a new owner lined up?
  18. Quick question, I realize this topic has been gone over and over and over, but I’m about to paint the inner Bulwarks with Humbrol Acrylics. Do I need to (or maybe should I) thin it? And if so how much? Thanks in advance!
  19. She looks great! Nice job finishing her up. Are you eying the next thing on the horizon or taking a breathe?
  20. It does look really nice! I’m glad you’re getting back to it, I enjoyed watching you build it. Does such a think even exist?
