I agree, I actually picked one up based on that thread and have been doing my best to use it more and more. I suppose I meant larger sanding, mainly the hull after planking. I made a saw dust mess in my garage doing that.

Very cool pictures, thanks for sharing! It doesn’t look all that disorganized (maybe that says something about my area though...). How do you keep sawdust from getting everywhere?

Basic but Good kit recommendations for granddaughter and I
VTHokiEE replied to glbarlow's topic in Wood ship model kits
I think that whatever you choose she’ll have a fond memory of the time; I also think that completing any model at 6 is a very proud accomplishment. It may be a lot to find a model that you’re able to build at 6 that you’re still “proud” of in a modeling sense much later. I’d love to see what people suggest though as I may try to get my 7 year old or eventually 3 year old interested in the hobby. Maybe something like the Optimist Dinghy from MarisStella? http://www.marisstella.hr/gotovi_modeli_galery.php?id=32&tip=2&optimist-dinghy39cm-1-6 -
That’s a splendid idea, what size tubing do you use and do you have brand recommendations?

Miniature Desk-Top Laser-Cutter
VTHokiEE replied to wefalck's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Thanks, that’s great to know! I don’t mind tinkering (I have a 3D printer that needed a decent amount of modifications). As soon as I can think up how to arrange the garage I think I’ll pick one up. -
Miniature Desk-Top Laser-Cutter
VTHokiEE replied to wefalck's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Awesome review! I’ve had a desktop laser cutter on my mind for a little while. I was looking at something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Orion-Motor-Tech-Upgraded-Engraving/dp/B07SQQMN3F -
I bought some syringes (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01HFTYINS/) to get a little more precise with my glue application.

kit preview 1:64 Zulu fishing Boat - Vanguard Models
VTHokiEE replied to James H's topic in REVIEWS: Model kits
Are the sails going to be pre-sewn? Are you planning on using them in your build (or is Chris, I’m curious what they will look like)? Being an amateur the differences of wood frequently escape me (aside from the “that looks nice” aspect). What visually would be different between the decks? Given the potential beginner market it may be a good idea to do side by side pictures so that a novice has a better idea of what the upgrade means to them (or maybe it’s simply me 🙂). I’m looking forward to the two builds! -
Thank you! That was a trying time to say the least for me, but I am very glad that I redid it. I learned a lot from it (and hopefully some of that learning will translate into a relaxing second planking). I’m very much enjoying watching your speedy build and learning a lot from that as well.

I had started the V-108 as well, but stalled. I wasn’t a huge fan of all the cuts as well. Is there any significant cutting with these laser cut kits? I’ve been hesitant to buy a paper model because I didn’t really know what to expect (and I probably should try something smaller like a lighthouse first). I’m excited to follow your build along!

Small update: I still need to attach the top 1x4mm strip in order to call the 1st planking complete but after a good deal of sanding and some filling here I am: Next up I have to attach the stern post; I’ll have to be careful after that in order not to knock it right off again.

I would recommend going to a physical store for DAP Rapidfuse where it will be cheaper; I see it at Walmart for around $5 and Lowes for about $6 (or buy it online from a different source).

What type of CA glue did you use? I think using CA takes a lot of practice, but maybe a gel version for things like planking would help prevent the stains.
-
I’m not certain if you did or not based on your pictures but I have seen it recommended that you plank both sides at once to minimize the chance of the hull warping. I don’t have enough experience to know how critical that is but it might be something to keep in mind in the future. It’s looking good so far!

Ha, it took me a few minutes but I see what you mean (and I’m glad I posted the picture). I shaped it based off the other side (which wasn’t the best idea). I’m not going to change it now (first layer reasoning) but thank you for pointing out my error so I can correct it on the 2nd planking!

Here is a picture of where I am now: Due to the untapered garboard plank the remaining 4 planks will get a little thin on the stern. Maybe I’ll try to get fancy and do a drop plank (I think that is the right term?) since it’ll get covered anyway.

Thank you! I think wood filler will be able to sort out the dips pretty well. I placed the final plank on one side this morning. I made the mistake of doing the garboard plank last so it’s too skinny, but as a first layer it’ll do. On the other side I think I’ll run a non-tapered plank for the garboard plank (if possible) to see how it would be done on the second layer and then mark out the hull for the remaining planks. That’s a good point, I am striving for the former but I wasn’t considering the later. I’ll keep an eye out for that.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
