That is a very generous offer! There is a lot great recommendations here. I’ll probably try out some of the specific recommendations as well. For this build I ended up buying a variety of steel ball bearings just to have a random supply on hand in case of me being me in the future and losing a different size. Thank you again for the offer though! HA! I used to be uncomfortable buying certain things and then I realized that the cashier really doesn’t care what I buy... and that I don’t really care either. It was quite a liberating day 😂

I have not built this model, but I have looked at a few build logs and while I didn’t see anything particular about installing the anchor chain I did notice that it looks like another deck sits atop this section. If this is correct you could potentially drill a hole in the deck and thread it through (depending on the area below), or maybe cut the chain and simply glue it down since it will be covered? Maybe these aren’t great ideas, but I would take a look ahead in the build to see how much of this area is covered as it may provide some flexibility in how you approach the problem.

It’s looking really nice; I’d be quite proud of it as well. Is there any way to apply a clear matte coat to the large winch (I believe that is what it is)? That might tone it down a little bit, but I don’t know that it’s necessary.

I hope that you do! It'd be great fun to see what you do with it. I also couldn't help but see that CAF Le Coureur as an imminent build in you signature, I'd love to see that build as well. I've been going back and forth whether or not to pre-order one (I'm currently holding temptation at bay, but wow is it hard... hmm now that I think about it may you should stick with the Alert instead of tempting me further 😁).

I finished up with cannonballs (and ended up with a large assortment of steel ball bearings in the process to replace the one I lost, unfortunately there were not any spares). I cut a piece off of the 3mm pear sheet to attach the shot holders. I touched up the cannonballs after I had glued them to the holders and of course I couldn't do this without a slight incident (slightly painting the holder). Due to this I have some "nice" brushes on order, with cleaner, etc to hopefully keep a nice tip. After these were attached I moved onto the ring bolts on the deck. I decided to follow in BE's footsteps on his Alert and used aftermarket eye pins and rings instead of the included PE parts. I bought some from Amati and had some on hand from hismodel, which were already blackened (I ordered some hooks for rigging the cannons and grabbed some eye pins as well. Side note - everyday my young son asks when I am going to do a cannon, so I may need to start on one soon :-). These pictures show off all my flaws, the blackening looks quite rough, but it isn't really noticeable from normal viewing distances. I do think that I need to improve in this area though. Here we are for now:

According to this review: The thinner (0.6mm) lighter colored wood (Ramin) is for the deck and the thicker (2mm) Ramin is for the first hull planking. You can probably verify this in some build logs on the site but it matches up with what I would expect.

I made a best offer for one on eBay but sadly it doesn’t look like many are available there at the moment. I would keep an eye out there if no one has one for sale here. Good luck with the kit, it’s quite nice! PS - It looks like you may have accidentally made this topic twice; you may want to delete the other one.

With the alert some of the parts were slightly redesigned and the wood changed to pear wood. For the speedy I believe it is mainly wood types for the exterior planking (the laser deck for the speedy was also updated between version 1 and 2). Edit - I’m currently building the Alert and it is a very nicely designed kit.

I lost a cannonball in my kit and while looking for possible replacements I saw some 2mm black ceramic ball bearings on Amazon. Has anyone had any experience with these? I wonder how they would take a Matte coat as I’m certain they will be glossy. I saw on a different post that after heating chrome steel ball bearings they were able to be blackened so as an alternative, I’m considering getting an assortment of chrome steel 2mm to 8mm bearings so I’ll have extra in the future. Am I overlooking a better alternative for cannonballs? Thanks!

I finished added the decorations Then I started working on the cannonball holders and the cannonballs. Unfortunately the cannonballs are steel so I tried to spray paint them instead of chemically blackening them. The spray seemed to work well but now that I'm gluing the shot into the holders I'm having a fit of a time. Glue is everywhere, mainly in places that I didn't intend and I'm scrapping off some of the paint; thankfully I'm doing this off model and I'll try to touch them up and we'll see what happens. This step is certainly full of frustration at the moment (and I'm pretty certain that I've lost at least a few cannonballs so most likely I'll have to find some replacements 🙁). I'll definitely be glad to be through with it).

Vintage unfinished speedboat model, any ideas?
VTHokiEE replied to LMDAVE's topic in Wood ship model kits
I have no idea if it is modeled after this or not, but it made me think of this review I saw before immediately: -
Hi Glenn; from one Floridian to another - welcome to MSW!

That looks really nice! I'm quite tempted to pick up an airbrush as well; about how long does cleaning the brush take when you're all done?

I considered this; I took a look forward and I think I’m in the clear so I took the easy way out (😳). I’ve almost all the decorations on and I think it looks good (my 7yr old though it was wonderful and asking if I painted it. The moment really made me smile but I had to tell her that I did not paint it, but maybe someday). Humbrol, but I don’t have much experience painting so maybe my pot is not representative. The red and blue were a good consistency (be certain to sand off that laser char though). The Black seemed thick and the yellow thin; but they all look reasonable to me so far so I’m not really complaining. I’ll have to try a few different brands as I go along and see what I like.

Darn, my fears were realized. Since I cut the gun ports too wide the PE decorations are now too long. I believe the only solution is to trim some of the decorations off as best as I can to fit them and make certain to do it in pairs to keep the symmetry on each side. No will know aside from me in the end and I really would like to have the ornate fittings on. I’ll sleep on this before I start trimming but I don’t really see an alternative path, nor any real downside to this approach.

I added the cathead supports and the Hawse Ports. It took me a a few coats to get the supports painted reasonably well and then cutting out the rail and fitting it around the cap rail. I decided not to cut away the cap rail and instead sanded away a corner of the support. I thought that this would be a more safe approach and reduce the likelihood of me damaging the model or getting frustrated. Currently, I'm crossing my fingers in hopes that there is enough space for the PE decorations between the gun ports.

Thank you Edward and Mike, I appreciate the comments and encouragement! Thanks and I intend to, it’ll (hopefully) help me improve by pointing out these smaller issues to watch out for next time. What type do you use?
