    She sure is a beauty! I really like what you did with the dyed sails. Do I spy (sorry for American dimensions) a 1/8” (or maybe 3.175mm) hand drill here? I have been on the lookout for one to fit some bits I have with those colored rings so I’m hoping it’s the same size collet. If so where did you find it? Thanks!

    What a great build! I love what you did with the figures! I’m hoping to add some atmosphere with figures as well (more than a little nervous about painting them though, I get shakey hands). I grabbed a few Amati cast figures that will hopefully fit the bill (sadly only 4/6 were in stock when I ordered, I’ll have to see if I need the other two when I get there).

    Oh there will be some happy pirate dancing when I finish this layer off. Planking was the scariest part of taking on this model and while it had a few hiccups along the way I think I can say that I’m comfortable with at least the process. With any luck I’ll have a update within a week 🤞.

    Thanks! I really keep thinking that I should get back to this build. I made the “mistake” of starting a second build (Alert by Vanguard) and have become consumed with that at the moment. I’m almost done the second planking and I may try to take a breather from it at that point and do another belt or two here.

    It’s looking quite good! Is there a reason not to have the waterline painter across the bottoms of the stern?

    Wow, that looks great! Great job! I’m looking forward to whatever you choose next (but please don’t neglect your ships too much I really want to see that Triton and Winchelsea come to light 😉).

    It depends on what you would like your finished planking to look like. There are things that you may settle for in a first planking, like tapering to a point or having a plank sit/finish on another instead of the keel (I'm not certain the correct term for this) that you want to avoid in a second planking. I tried to have my first planking be practice for the second layer so it isn't a huge difference aside from not wanting to have many gaps (and trying to keep my gluing a bit prettier). I did do at least one shortcut and I had wonky garboard planks on my first pass (the garboards on my second layer aren't great but they will be painted over and I think I'm satisfied with them for my first planked model). If you look at the stern on the first layer you might see that I placed a stealer that tapered all the way down to a point. I don't want to do this on the second pass; I'm trying to have stealers look like stealers and only go to about half of the plank width. Unfortunately today (with about 8 planks/side to go) I realized that I over tapered the stern so I need to do a few more stealers than I originally thought 🙂.

    Ha! I’m pretty certain that I’ll spend almost 50 hours on the second planking alone on my Alert (alright maybe a slight exaggeration, but probably at least 25). Looking very nice though!

    A pale ale solves most everything 🙂, of course isopropyl alcohol is usually preferred for wood glue removal (PVA glue).

    What glue are you using? PVA comes off pretty easily with IPA (I was pretty nervous of doing this, until I did it). Everything is looking nice! You’re making me want to return to my half hull.

    Thanks for the encouragement and when you frame novice in that way it does make sense. I think I might actually try to follow your path a little. While I continue work on my current build I keep eyeing cross sections and I think using the Triton as a way to get a taste of scratch building and reading plans might be a good way to not get in over my head too soon (and maybe an excuse to pick up a mill or a lathe in the process 🙂). Either way, I have plenty in front on me with my current build so I'll probably continue to think it over for a long time to come and in the mean while I certainly am enjoying watching you work!

    After reading through your log I’m not certain that I would deem your work anywhere near “novice.” I picked up these plans as I had seen them labeled as a good choice for a beginner scratch builder. This log will be a great help when I finally try to tackle a scratch build but I do not think I have anywhere near the skills or equipment to try this one in the near future.

    Thanks! I’m hoping this is the ticket, I was laying it on it’s side after I did my best to empty it. Then I ruined the second after one use trying to clean it. I’m still slowly plugging away on the second planking.

    How exactly do you "clean" these after use? They are very helpful but I'm destroying the tips.

    I have noticed several people, probably many more, on this forum with CA allergies and that is quite unfortunate. How long were you staying around the fumes during the second planking? I go very slow, usually only a pair of planks at a time, but I'm still thinking that I should set up some form of ventilation for it to prevent developing a reaction. Everything is looking very nice btw.

    Thanks for the review; I need some sort of tool sleeve like that for some files that I picked up awhile ago. I’m not certain if the smaller sleeve is still a little big for only files though.

    Could be walnut. I have felt that frustration before and needed to step away from my build when I was breaking things. How hot is the water that you are using? Using boiling water, or maybe steam, might help the situation slightly. I haven't tried this but maybe you could bend the wood a little, then add more water/heat and bend it further. I have a second thought as well. Are you below the waterline? If so maybe you could consider swapping the planks with a more flexible wood since it will be painted white regardless?
