Thats a lot of bendy parts Carl. Gotta love a good pair of parallel pliers. The beverage helps too I am sure. Although I was always taught guns and alcohol do not mix well. Sam

Currently remaking my Main Top Gallant mast. I think where I went wrong was I treated the mast and the associated flag pole as one combined length, ie I made that whole assembly 1/2 the top mast. I currently have the whole mess 8 squared, if all goes well I will get it rounded and sanded tonight, maybe even a picture. Sam

Sjors, The Gremlin is my name for that nagging voice we all hear when we critique our own work. He is vicious, mean and nasty, has foul body odor and chews with his mouth open. No redeeming social qualities whatsoever except to make us look at our work and try to improve it. He also passes gas and blames it on the dog! Sam

Sjors! Its been so quiet around here without you. Welcome back. Sam

Julie, I bought me Enterprise way back in 2009 and started in on her immediately. I still havn't raised a single mast yet. There is no rush, work as you want to. We will be here. Sam

Ok then! I have had some time to play - or is it engage in my/our mental disorder? I sat down Saturday and started in on my Main Top Gallant mast. I finished carving it last night and temped it in place then sat back to bask in my greatness... only to have the Gremlin leap from the bookshelf to my shoulder with a Banshee-like scream, 'You @)^%#^@ FOOL! Its too (!&@^#^$& SHORT!!!! I am not sure but I think he may be right. Lees and TFFM both tell me the Top Gallant is to be 1/2 the length of the associated Top Mast. The total length of what you see below is 1/2 the Top Mast, but I think the hounds were supposed to be higher up?? If that is the case how long should the flag pole be? Maybe I am misreading all the details, since I am still learning all this terminology I get glazed eyes sometimes. Thoughts anyone? Photos below:

Hey Denis! I finally get to sit in on one of your builds from the beginning, well, sort of..... Sneaking in and sitting quietly by the door so I dont disturb others when that cute little fuzzy pointy eared animal calls me away again. Sam

Carl, I am slow what can I say? Its not that I have lost weight, more like redistributed weight in a different format - fat is squishy-er than muscle and after the holidays there was some "redistribution" involved!! Sam

Carl,You are a glutton for punishment sir!! Since the room is filling up fast I will slide in by the corner here and do my best not to fiddle with the shiny bits! I see you have the proper tools for this job, tweezers and the attitude adjustment serum. Will be following wiht interest. Sam

Grant that is some really nice work! Have you described your soldering set up, did I miss it somewhere? I dont think my little butane torch would be up to the task for this, I really struggled getting my anchors to take silver solder and they didnt have much more mass than your wheel and spoke holders. Carl thank you. Hopefully there will be more build time. Trying to be careful of what I ask for though, don't want "More build time" to equal unemployed!! I think I would be happy with a fair raise and a 40 hour work week with a few days here Nd there on O.T. J. Sometimes I think if you look in Websters Dictionary you would find under Wooden Ship Modeling you would find something like "A mental disorder characterized by the masochistic need to constant rebuild parts regardless of the naked eyes ability to see the changes" Sam
-
Thanks J! I missed this somehow. Still working 6+ days a week so NOTHING has been accomplished build-wise. I get home, take care of daily chores and get to sit down about an hour before its time to go to bed and start all over again. Unless we decide to take on another rush job I should be back on a more humane schedule by mod Feb and can get back to building. Until then, Happy New Year everybody, Sam

Looking good Slog. RE the soldering. Could you drop down to a lower melting point solder like silver bearing solder? Here in the States its sold as plumbers solder. It melts around 450 degrees vs the 12-1400 degrees of silver solder. Your hand rails are not structural, I would think the plumbers solder would be just fine. Perhaps some of the more experienced could set us both straight? Sam

Brian, Been following along quietly here. What Carl is trying to say is wood glue doesnt stick well to finished wood. if you clear coat first then wherever you want to glue things like cannon wheels, and other furniture you will need to scrape af the finish. That is why some people choose to finish after. FWIW I prefer to get some clear on my parts first to keep smudges and stains off the wood, knowing I will have to scrape some off later. Or you can plan ahead and mask the areas off that will need to be glued - that can be problematic in my opinion though. As long as you understand the pros and cons I would say either way is acceptable. Sam

Ahoy Capt!! And a fine job you have done there. You have even managed to use one of Gods greater gifts....the Lego! Next you'll be a-plankin' with Lincolns own Logs. I see by your last couple of pictures you even found the time to master your cameras White Balance settings. As Mark said, have a pint, or two. Sam
