Hi Guys, Building guitars meant soaking wood and bending with heat (by hand or in a bending jig), so I know what soaking wood is all about. Just not necessary with the size of wood we’re using here (my opinion). I’ve got a spray bottle and the one plank I did cut and broke didn’t go to waste. I did bend it (I.e. Chuck method), worked fine and found all that is necessary is a couple drops of water smeared on the plank with your finger. So the plan for today is to get at least one plank on the ship, maybe one on the opposite side too. 🙂

Kirby, When you use the gel, how are you holding the planks in place? Pins?

Good Morning Everyone, A couple posts ago, I mentioned there are several ways to accomplish the task. I am brain fatigued studying this thing called "planking". 😑 I'm studying the "Lining Off your hull for planking". The model used in the publication lines off and has 4 "belts". This looks to be quite a bit larger ship than my Lady Nelson. What is your recommendation for the number of belts; 2, 3? Step 3 & 4 loose me completely (the whole fan template thing). Can anyone explain this to me? Remember, this is my 1st build. I get the whole "no stealers or drop planks". I have watched several videos and most all end up with stealers and dropped planks.

Working for a company that always preached safety…. Today I was carving in a rabbit on my Lady and I found myself carving a square blade knife into the keel with my hand directly behind it. Slip and instant insertion of exacto blade into my hand. I’m very aware of the easy ways you can loose fingers and injure your hands in this modeling hobby. Thank you for the thread! Think as you work.

Greetings to MSW/NRG Members and All Ships at Sea

Welcome to the forum Michael. Like to see that airplane turn into a ship! 😄 -
Hi from frosty Western Washington (We're not used to this), I'm ready to go, I get out the hull planks and for the fun of it measure some widths. I have a low of 5.03mm to a high of 5.20mm and every thing in between. I am trying to eyeball them square in the calipers. Is this variation in width anything to be concerned with when laying out things? Can I generalize and say my planks are 5mm?

Hi All, Newbie question. Is there a chart somewhere that would show what the sizes for blocks, tackle, rope etc would be for a particular scale (1:64, 1:48 etc)? I’ve seen much discussion about kit parts that are not to scale. I’ve often wondered if the blocks on some models weren’t just a tad large.

Error code 200
Dave_E replied to Blue Ensign's topic in How to use the MSW forum - **NO MODELING CONTENT**
I had the error message twice last week, then on the 3rd attempt it loaded. Just had the error message while trying to use my I pad to take the picture and go directly to the site. No go. Took the picture with my phone, loaded the picture onto computer and then dragged it into the thread (my Lady Nelson) and it worked fine. -
Hi All, Here is the latest. I think the next step is to start planking. I've been researching and reading everything I can and like so many other things, looks like there are several ways to accomplish the task. Straight away, I can honestly say, I'm not doing the pins and nails method. Don't want to start a side bar here here on the topic of planking, but as I proceed, I will use this thread to get opinions and advice as I go.

1:64 cannon detail
Dave_E replied to Dave_E's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
Thanks Guys, I see the difference. There is a place for the "rings", however not like I thought. I will study some of the completed work on the site. I have seen there can be much "rigging" done for a single cannon. The Amati instructions and the Lady Nelson video build show a very simple rigging. Time to study. -
1:64 cannon detail
Dave_E replied to Dave_E's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
Suppose this is as good a thread as any to ask some more questions regarding the cannons. I have 20 LITTLE brass rings that get attached to the side of the cradle. Super glue I assume is the method? How many times do you accidentally break them off while doing rigging? -
Hi Everyone, It hasn't taken me long to see that I'm quickly liking the "kit bashing" I've been reading about. Some day I may scratch build, my gut tells me no. However, I'm already seeing the advantages to "kit bashing", i.e. better woods, better and more detailed parts, quality of materials etc.. What are some of your best "go-to" places for wooden ship building materials and supplies?

Outstanding Discussion! I'm going to get a caliper that has a multiple readout. I have many scales and rulers, all of drafting quality, and I find the metric side of the house much easier to maneuver in. AND, many of my new friends reside in regions of the world where metric is the game. Trying to stay with US Standard inches and convert to metric is just asking for a foul up in my mind. 😄 Thank you all for your most excellent input!
