  1. Hi All, Good as a place as any to continue the detail topic. The cradles that come in the Amati kit are cast (pot metal) perhaps and have a coating on them, some sort of varnish or lacquer. You can see it under a magnifying glass very plainly. I was going to try and paint the carriage red and the wheels black. Do I need to remove this coating before attempting to paint? If so, how? If no, what type of paint should I use, enamel or acrylic? Again, being my first ship, I could just leave them alone… 🤔 Am I wrong assuming cannon parts in better kits are actually wood?
  2. OK, here we go. The anchors are done, might as well continue with the entire ship. 🙂 I've decided there are things about this first kit that I just have to let go and get one done. I think the metal "wood stock" looks better brown than if I'd have left it alone. The rings were my first attempt with the Birchwood Casey black. Works pretty good, except it does scratch off easy. Port side Starbord side. Wood filler is an amazing tool... one I'd rather not have to use. I have promised myself this. On the starbord side I experimented with CA filler. Don't like the way it sands, won't do that again. In the following 2 photos you will see how the garboard plank (did I say that correctly) is proud onto the keel. Suggestions on how or what to do about it before starting the second planking? I'm starting to like those ship models I see that put the keel in AFTER planking. OK boys and girls... be gentle. 😁
  3. Insane modeling detail! (That translates WOW). 👍😉
  4. Nice! Back that camera up a foot and you will see perfection. 👍
  5. You make it look so easy... 👍 I take it you won't be plating or painting below the waterline?
  6. Hi Steve, This is the place! Welcome aboard Mate!
  7. Adding sails to a model ship (in my opinion) is an art in itself. I haven’t heard the term yet “model ship sail maker”, but I think it’s a warranted title. Superb work!
  8. OUTSTANDING! Congratulations on a superb build! 👍
  9. Hi Bug, Crazy good work! I’m new to the site and just found your log. Question for you. Way back when you got started, why did you do so much deck work etc. instead of moving right into the hull planking? Was it the instructions or your experience that motivated the direction you took? Like your work and am going to watch, especially when you get into the rigging. I have contemplated this ship for a future endeavor.
  10. I have a grandson who is a Lego maniac… where did you come up with the correct Lego parts to build the winder? I have yet to work any rigging on my first build… you make it look easy.
  11. Hey Dan, Outstanding. I was a technical writer/course curriculum developer for a few years. You are very correct about the pictures! I am a 1st time builder also, and look forward to your build log. I have one too for the Lady Nelson. Have a great week! 👍
  12. Hey Julian, Welcome back to it. This is the place! Dumb questions... what's that? 🙂
  13. OUTSTANDING! I've watched many of your videos and will over and over I'm sure (especially when I get to the rigging). If I was ever going to lay the label "protige Model ship maker" down, it would have your name on it. 👍😀
  14. With the frame shaping that started the mess, planking to be replaced, might as well crunch it and buy a new kit.
  15. Morning Fellas, Hindsight (usually being a good thing), yes, I should have taken them both off. Unfortunately, I kept cruising and will be done in a day or so. I did read someone’s post about just getting the 1st planking done on your first build. This has been a heck of a learning experience and actually think I’ve got it.
  16. Thanks Glenn! This thing is fantastic! It will be awhile before this builder is cutting his own planks out of sheets, and this cutting ruler holds the 5mm planks firmly while I make the cut and keeps the finger tips out of the way. Thanks for the tip!
