Looks like a fun project. I had a ball with my Ulises tug a number of years back. I love your funnel ...... mine came with something like a tube from a roll of toilet paper . As someone already asked, what's her LOA?

I'm sitting here smiling and wondering how much more detail we can get on board this little gem? I'm getting old now and the memory isn't as good as it used to be but I do seem to recall that we already have axes, knives, harpoons, lances, line tubs and a water barrel ---- with working spigot. All this on top of the best wood finish on the planet!

Chopping block work table
augie replied to qwerty2008's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
How big is the table Lextin? The reason I ask is that what I've done is take something like that and lay a solid wooden door on top of it then screw the door into the old wood table top. Gives a nice, smooth work surface that can be easily taken apart and even flipped over when the surface gets worn (about 20 years). -
Tedious is worth it. Chains look great!

I'm with Brian 100% on this. Drop planks and stealers are part of the game so use what you need. Things are looking very nice for you. And yup, use 95% of your sanding energy on the first planking and the second will fall nicely in place.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments, interest and the 'likes'. DR. Per ----- Chuck provides for leaving sections of the gun deck exposed right on the plans. In my experience, if you follow his lead things come out fine. I have been looking at some other partially open deck ideas (like Rafine's Essex by Sam Cassano) and may make some changes to suit the way she is going to be displayed. I have a few months before I make the final decision on which way to go. And yes, that little Dremel table is a gem for holding her steady and arrow straight. Easy in and out is priceless. They come up on eBay once in a while.

About time for an update. After playing around with different configurations (wire, wood, rope), I finally decided on using the photoetched stanchions and some line for the companionway railings. I'll use this throughout: The photo also shows a glimpse of the second of the aft bulkheads and the permanently installed capstan and pawls. The next 8 deck beams for the quarterdeck were also installed, including lodging and hanging knees: Finally, just an overall shot: There are several more decks beams to go in to finish the quarterdeck but first we need to prepare some deck fittings.

Yes. We spend a lot of time fairing the hull bulkheads so that the planks run smooth and naturally. Sometimes, a minor irregularity might show up after planking and this can be easily sanded out with carvel planking ----- especially if you are double planking. I wasn't sure how it might be handled with clinker.

I'm with you, Popeye. I just may have chosen someone saltier to portray Cap'n Billy.

Thinking Things Through - French Frigates
augie replied to mtaylor's topic in Nautical/Naval History
It seems really strange that they would express fractions in a way that's larger than a whole number. One can make sense out of 64/100 but 195/100? Is there some convention we're not aware of?

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
