  1. Aiee! You are now crowned Tab King.
  2. A harder specie of wood than basswood is needed for miniature carvings, as Paul advises. You will immediately see the difference, especially if your tools are kept razor sharp!
  3. I was being tongue-in-cheek with my suggestion, Mike! But they are professional grade quality.
  4. It is a good document for early 20th century American shipbuilding practice.
  5. My own ropewalk does not have a free-spinning tailstock. I never got one to work well ever. I crank the geared hook on the tailstock once the strands are wound. Works just as well.
  6. Sweet! And I swear by isopropanol. Often some Saran wrap around the part(s) keeps it from evaporating.
  7. I agree that off the model/on the workbench whenever possible is best!
  8. Lovely, Mike. Are you going to go into business and sell them?
  9. To reduce arm fatigue, Ed, had you considered either a lowering electric table or a portable adjustable stand to rest your elbows on while rigging?
  10. Nice, but they really throw some curves at you!
  11. Maybe you should ask them, Steven. There are other vessels down there....
  12. So the crew are not five years old? I learn something new from you every day, Michael.
  13. Lovely metalwork as usual, Ed. Well done!
  14. A draught of Wolf of 1742 is described by RMG as follows: ZAZ4336 Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the body plan, sheer lines with inboard detail, and longitudinal half-breadth for Wolf (1742), a 14-gun two-masted Sloop building Deptford by Mr West. The ship was snow-rigged with sixteen pairs of row-ports. Read more at http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/84127.html#SvLQ0edL7qEVLBYi.99 This Wolf predated the Speedwell class by 10 years and her hull was much wider and shallower. Is perhaps the model kit of a Speedwell class ship but mis-named Wolf?
  15. Thumbs up to your progress thus far, Dan. Oops, poor choice of words. Hope the problem settles down while you are at the Conference. Safe travels.
  16. You might find a cone with a shallower included angle more effective: less frictional resistance. Make the 'big' end about half the diameter of the one in the photo.
  17. We would welcome anything that you care to present! I've thoroughly enjoyed your and your son's last book. There's a lot of talent in the family.
  18. It's the mix of all the items you used that may be the problem. If other wood species do not cause the effect you had, it would have to be the combination of the holly and other items in the stew!
  19. Is it an arrangement where a shroud can quickly be disconnected? (I've no idea why one would wish to do that, unless to brace the main yard round further in an extreme situation.)
  20. You need to replicate what you did in every way to begin to determine what happened, Paul. Change one factor and you change the experiment.
  21. Happiness! Glad that your hull movement problems are resolved, Ben.
