Dan, Marvelous work you're doing. It's a real pity they don't build cruise ships (or ocean liners for that matter) like this anymore. That ship is a work of art, IMO.

I went here: and had a look for your ship. There's a couple of logs but note that the Mantua is also a Corel kit as I recall. I 'd check those logs and see what they did while waiting for an answer here. -
Thanks for the likes and the comments everyone. Big day today... the rings came in and so did the guns from Chuck. I ordered 24 of the appropriate size for the 8 pdrs and also ordered the 6 pdrs. Yes, they're for an English ship but given the actual size and normal viewing length, I think they'll work perfectly. Here's a couple of pics. I will have to make quions now that I know the proper dimensions for them. This should be a lot of fun. Time go dig out the Birchwood-Casey and start blackening everything. I do plan on blackening and fitting the guns (temporarily) to the carriages but not actually installing the barrels until the upper deck and the channels and iron work for the shrouds are in place. I'll put the carriages in place and lock them down with glue and a "safety" post through the deck. Having a cannon and/or carriage come loos after the deck above it is in place is not fun in my book. Been there, done that, built my vocabulary in an ungentlemanly way.

Thanks for the answer. It just seems puzzling that everyone says "remove the char" and then bang.... no need to. I'm all for not needing to myself.

Andrew, you can cut the eye on the needle such to give you an open area to lay the thread into the eye rather than having to feed it through the eye. This useful when trying to "catch" a line that has one end secured and you need to belay the other end. -

Which ship? Makes a difference as to size, shape, etc. If you're using wood, bending can be done via water and heat although there's been a lot of discussion lately on bending planking (use the search for blank bending and you'll see what I mean). The size (thickness) of the material could me that the wood should be cut rather than bent if it's too large and doesn't work well. As for wood... another "depends" moment. Pick a wood that will match/contrast or look good with the rest of the ship. -
And here I thought you were doing a fine job on the build... So a second time? Why does that sound like something I'd do????

Thanks for the comments and the likes, everyone. I cleaned up the laser char on one carriage and assembled it. Now to wait for the guns from Chuck... <patience grasshopper, patience> I forgot how tiny and fiddly they are to assemble. So when the guns get here, I'll adjust as needed and make the quoins so that they will all be at the same elevation. I think this will be a slow process as it took me a couple of hours to clean off the char and fit everything. Hopefully with a bit of practise, I'll pick up speed.

I'm glad you have access. I can see doing a double plank... no hard fast rules around here. I trust you're not near the volcano nor had the heavy flooding that was going on.

I have both hex and round pencils, Chuck. I think it depends on where you buy them.

Hi Aldo, great to see you again my friend. Computer crashes don't help do they? What the others have said as far as solving the computer problem might work. I'm not sure why you'd want to plank over what's there. I think I read that right? Looks pretty good from here. If you don't have access to the plans here at MSW, ping an admin. I'll be glad to vouch for you.

For a look at other restorations, go to the scratch area and also the kit area and search using "restoration" as your key word. Some should pop up as there's been more than a few. You should get some ideas of methods and how-to's.. I'd recommend you open a log which will let us follow along and also you'll find it's a great way to get help and advice as well as make a few friends.

What neat model. I didn't know they had rentals like that on the canal. Do you pilot them yourself?

Occre was formed by former employees of Artisana Latina when the owner of AL moved his operations to Vietnam. The linage shows in the types of woods and designs. As I understand it, they do have some good instructions but I suggest you check out the Occre builds in the Kit Log area. There's a searchable index here:

Two metres? Not a kit probably but maybe from kit plans being blown up for the plans? So probably a scratch build.
